Can anyone recommend a cheap but good quality "Universal" USB-C cable?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 07:02 AM PST

In an attempt to reduce the clutter of cables I end up having around me, I'm looking for a decent "Universal" cable - i.e. one that's USB-C at both ends, but with a USB-A adaptor on one end, and a micro-usb adaptor on the other.

There's this Nomad one, but it was somewhat expensive, and not widely available any more in the UK - has anyone seen any alternatives?

    Feature wishlist:

    • Not too long (this is mostly for quick charges, or hooking devices up to each other - I don't need a long cable)
    • braided / bendproof / etc type cable
    • USB-C on each end (so when I'm using USB-C native devices, which, I presume eventually, should be all my devices), there isn't an adaptor dongle in the way adding extra strain to each end
    • USB-C -> Micro USB adaptor attached at one end (so I can connect to older phones, or charge all the random devices using microusb)
    • USB-C -> USB-A adaptor attached at the other end (for connecting to older computers or chargers, etc)

The other option, is just the two adaptors, if a matching pair of well made, but not too bulky adaptors exist, that can be firmly attached to a USB-C cable (as they're liable to get lost if they're not tied down!)

Screen getting faded and washed out after plugging in USB headphones

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:46 AM PST

Whenever I plug in my USB headset into my LG Wing, when watching YouTube the screen gets "washed out" or "faded" with contrast noticeably declining (on an OLED screen) like it was stuck in the middle of the "device was plugged in" transition. Any ideas?

    Here's a picture of what I mean:

    Galaxy S21 Ultra WiFi unstable

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 01:55 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

I've gotten my S21 Ultra a little over a 2 weeks now and I'm having severe WIFI issues with it. In the sense that my WIFI is highly unstable. It works but drops the signal constantly which it either reconnects after like 10 - 30 seconds, or I have to turn the WIFI off and back on again to solve it.Sometimes it says that it's connected without internet and then I again have to turn it back off and on again to solve it.

This is translating to the fact that using my phone over a longer period of time to scroll through social media or have voice calls with my family (I live in another country) or anything related to the internet for that matter, is just super unstable.

Before you go "check your router, reset your router, ..." and the like; no it's not a router problem, yes I have done every single thing with the router possible, and yet all my other devices work perfectly fine; (3 laptops, galaxy s10, galaxy tab s6, galaxy watch).

I've reset my network settings on the S21 Ultra and changed my google WIFI location settings off; which are weird because those are on on my S10 and no issues or whatsoever now. Changed MAC address to phone MAC instead or randomize and also no luck.

Anyone has any other idea? :(

"Back" Swipe Gesture not working while keyboard is open.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:07 AM PST

I just bought the Samsung S21 5G, coming from the xiaomi mi 9T. I love to use swipe gestures to navigate through my phone. One of the things I am annoyed right now is that I can't swipe from the right to go "Back" in the keyboard area when it is open. I have to swipe at the top of my keyboard to go back. In my old xiaomi mi 9T, I am able to swipe from the right to go back even if the keyboard is open. Does anyone have the same problem and how can I solve it? Thank you very much!

Purchasing one of these 3 phones, need opinions since i'm confused

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:38 AM PST

Hey guys! Hope everyone is having a good 2021.

So, I am going to purchase an entry level smartphone in the next day or two and I'm either getting the POCO C3 or the Realme Narzo 20a. I do not require a very good camera and don't play video games at all but I do use my device quite heavily and consume a ton of media on it. Although the realme costs a bit more than the poco, i was thinking of purchasing it since it has a fingerprint censor and (i believe) better performance due to the chipset provided. However, i'm not too sure and don't want to make a purchase just based on the specs. I'm not very familiar with the UIs or brand reputation of either brand and was looking for some opinions. Which one do you think would be a better choice? Reviews make both the products look equally good and trustworthy

Also, does anyone have experience with Infinix phones? This one just launched today (link below) and it has a massive battery and huge screen for a price lower than both the phones mentioned above. However, i've never heard of the brand so i'm not really considering it much right now but it is an option.

    https://www.flipkart.com/infinix-smart-5-aegean-blue-32-gb/p/itm8d968c7fe7d88

    Thanks guys!

EDIT: I am also open to other phone recommendations as I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to tech (noob) and might not have shortlisted the best devices 😅. I have a budget of 8500 Rs/117 USD. Any other phone recommendations are welcome!

Wi-Fi-sharing automatically turns itself off after around 10min(A-50)

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 12:08 PM PST

Hello. I use the wifi from my phone as a backup connection when I get disconnected, but since it takes a while for the shared internet to work after sharing, I would like to already have it shared. So I can just connect on it instantly when I get disconnected.

However, it always turns itself off after about 10 minutes, so when I suddenly need it, I have to share again, and then it takes 5 minutes from popping up on available connections before I get actual Internet access through it. So I hope there is a way that I can share the internet, and it stays shared until I unshare.

Really hope someone knows how this can be fixed.

Can I save, reinstall or install a new OS on a phone that won't boot properly?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 11:59 AM PST

I have a Galaxy S9+ that is stuck in a reboot loop. It starts up, gives me about a 5-20 seconds of use, then reboots to the same thing. I cleared the cache partition and did a factory reset from the recovery menu, but it still happens, even in safe mode too. AT&T couldn't do anything but offer to replace it for $300 or sell me a new phone.

So I bought a new phone. But, I'd rather not just leave the old phone off or in a reboot loop indefinitely if it DOES still work perfectly well in the brief moments before rebooting.

So is there any other way of saving it, like installing a different OS or using it as SOMETHING other than just a paperweight??

I have a Samsung s10+ and recently on the one UI 3 update but i have noticed that the spell check drop down menu to select the correct spelling of a word goes underneath the keyboard instead of on top of it when I'm using the facebook messenger bubble. Has anyone had this problem or know of a fix?

How do I get rid of the app bar at the bottom of the home screen?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 10:43 AM PST

I'm setting up my home screen to use custom widgets. I want to get rid of the space where you would typically pin your commonly used apps. I have removed all the apps from that space. But that space is still there and I can't find a setting to remove it.

For some reason last week I started to get live scores about golf. I feel dumb because I can't find out how to stop these ones from showing up. I only have hockey under live scores so I'm not sure where this one is selected.

Youtube/video on Android "picture in picture" question. (Resubmitted from r/Android as the auto mod told me off)

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 10:16 AM PST

I have tried to find this out but, cant seem to phrase the question in a way where Google will help.

If I'm watching a video and switch apps the video goes smaller and goes always on top, if you press it once the video gets slightly larger...and then it shrinks again.

Is there anyway I can keep the slightly larger, small player? If there a setting somewhere which dictates the size of picture in picture video size?

I know this is an inane question but it's bugging me.

Is the Adoptable Storage only usable for apps?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:51 AM PST

I just tested out the Adoptable Storage on an Android 10 phone by formatting the 16gb microSD with Google's Files app and I'm a bit confused because it disappeared from the list of browsable locations. I was under the impression I would just have "Internal Storage 2". I am able to still see it in the Files app but it only shows its storage usage and that's it. I can move apps in and out of it too but I was wondering if that's all I can use it for?

My question essentially boils down to: Can I move my personal user files to it myself or is Adoptable Storage only usable as app storage?

Ensuring all photos are synced to google photos before a SD card cleanup?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:47 AM PST

    Hi all,
Yes, I'm lucky enough to still have an SD Card slot in my phone! But it's almost full of 30GB of photo's and videos in my DCIM folder... on a quick visual inspection, it looks like google photo's is backing these up to their cloud.

Question is, before I start purging these from the SD Card, is there a way I can ensure that everything is in google photo's cloud without inadvertently creating a whole lot of duplicates in the process?

    Thanks in advance!

Power Button and Vol Down button Problem

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:21 AM PST

Hey I currently have a problem where the volume down and power button have stopped working overnight. The weird thing is when I hold down either button it takes a screenshot. The power button still works for turning it on but not vice versa. I am not sure if I may have unknowingly changed any setting, if so please say. If any more info is needed please post them in the comment. Thanks in advance.

Issue with alarm not going off on S10

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:55 AM PST

I have 2 alarms, one at 1am and the other at 7am. I made the 1am alarm recently and it hasn't gone off since I made it. The 7am alarm has been working fine since I made it and any alarm that I set to remind me of something that will be happening a few hours later also work. I've tried googling what the problem could be but most answers are that there must be a notification setting turned off on the clock app but everything in my clock up is on.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is it difficult to transfer personal information from one phone to another when switching carriers? What about switching phone brand?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:43 AM PST

My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with Sprint, and it's on its last legs, so she's wanting to replace it. But she's concerned about being able to transfer all her personal information (such as saved passwords) to her new phone when she buys one. I'm with Verizon and they seem to be having a sale on Samsung phones. If she joined my Verizon plan and got a newer Samsung phone, would she have any trouble transferring her information? What if she instead got a different brand of phone but stayed with Sprint? Or even got a different brand of phone but switched to Verizon (or Spectrum)? The last time I got a new phone, the transfer was seamless, but those were both Google phones on Verizon; the last time I switched phone brands was around 2016 and the last time I switched carriers was in 2011 (and that time I was switching from a feature phone to a smartphone), so I'm not sure whether to attribute the seamlessness to recent technological advancements or to the fact that I was staying with the same carrier and phone brand...
