How to continuously sync or backup any files on Pixel device safely without using the cloud Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:48 AM PST I had a strong desire to keep any data I had on my android device backed up and synced, but private. I do not trust a cloud service such as Google drive, Dropbox, etc because A.) encrypting the files at rest in the cloud is not always straightforward and B.) I prefer an end-to-end encryption transport to my home computer or server where I can easily encrypt the files at rest and decrypt and use locally offline if necessary. You could do this every so often by connecting your Android device to your home computer or server and backing it up locally, but I wanted something that would instantly and continuously sync files no matter what Wi-fi, LTE, or network I was on. Here's how I solved it: Then I discovered open-source Syncthing. https://syncthing.net/ Syncthing will sync folders either one-way (as backup) or both ways with total end-to-end encryption during transport. It is easy to host on your home computer or server (you can encrypt the target folder on your computer if you wish) and the best part is it does not require network configuration. While you can get fancy and do port forwarding, you don't have to: it can use what are called relays, which are community hosted routing servers that can't see what you are synching since it is all encrypted. Set this up first on your target computer and register that computer as a device. If you need help on using this program, there is great documentation on the website and r/Syncthing When I first tried to install Syncthing, I downloaded the default app from the google play store. Unfortunately, this version has limitations put on it such that it does not allow access to all folders (including the key folders I was interested in: notes, books, etc.). This seems to be a known issue with the standard google play version. Here's how I solved it:
Hope that helps anyone that is looking to keep their notes & files backed up and secure safely to your own computer independent of what wi-fi you are on and with encryption and without passing through China or Google or Dropbox, etc. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:56 PM PST I would like to hide certain folders/photos in my gallery. Whenever I do and the go into any app and click the + to add photos, the photos from those hidden folders can be seen. How can I stop those photos from being visible anywhere when I hide them? Should be default behaviour in my opinion. I tried adding a full stop to folder's name but Samsung does not allow this. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Phone does this when I close all apps Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:11 AM PST After closing all my apps, the playstore icon replaces all my other apps. Once I click on it and exit, all my apps come back. Haven't been able to figure out what's going on. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
"Display over other apps" disabled in Android 10 Go. Is there a way to enable it? Posted: 12 Mar 2021 03:18 PM PST I need to screen record with an app, but Android 10 Go has the function disabled. Is there a way I can enable this feature for a specific app? [link] [comments] |
Phone Low Signal (1-2 bars) When Not in Call, but high signal (5 bars) when in call Posted: 12 Mar 2021 03:08 PM PST I have this problem where I keep missing calls and have no idea the calls were missed because my phone has low signal (1-2 bars) when not in a call, but once in a call, I notice the signal jumps up to 5 bars even in poor reception areas of my house where I usually have 1 or no bars. Is there a way to get it to run in the high signal mode constantly? Phone is a LG V20 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:39 PM PST Hey guys. Some days ago I noticed that, after using the camera from whatsapp, all the "you may have new messages" notifications come accompanied by a little camera icon that says that the app is using the camera, even if I'm not using the camera anymore and the permission is canceled. After restarting the phone, the issue dissapears. I do think it is some kind of bug, as my antivirus hasn't detected any problems, and I haven't dowloaded any apps from outside of the google play store or accessed any suspicious links. My OS is an Android 10. Does anyone have an idea of what may be going on? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:39 PM PST I want to share a picture with gmail but not the one I have added already. It's not letting me choose a different email, only the one I have on there already. How can I add an email? [link] [comments] |
Skype and Zoom (tablet) - why will it not work though an external audio device? Posted: 12 Mar 2021 08:34 AM PST I just got a tablet for this purpose. This works perfectly on my android phone, so why not on a tablet?I want to use an external USB microphone as my device though Skype and Zoom. But just uses the internal speakers no matter what, despite it giving me the option so select 'headset' or speakers when on a call - it doesn't do anything. The microphone is working perfectly fine for recording in separate apps and also playback using YouTube etc. Why does Skype and Zoom just bypass this? And why does this work fine on my Motorola phone and not on a Blackview TAB 8E Tablet? Both are android 10. I suspect it may have something to do with those software only thinking that a 'headset' can only be used though the jack input? but it should work, as it does on my phone. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:27 PM PST A file called Y29tLmVsdGVjaHMuZXMuNjI.pm apperead in Android/data on my phone. It appears that the file appeared on 30 December 2020 but I do not remember installing anything. I scanned my phone and there are no viruses. What is that file? [link] [comments] |
Phone shutting down automatically Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:50 PM PST Hello there, I hope you're doing great! My phone (Samsung S6) started acting weird today, I was browsing reddit and it suddenly shut down, I powered on the phone after few minutes and it shut down again, this has never happened before and my phone is not damaged in way. The system is up to date, I tried to start my phone on safe mode to check if the issue is caused by an app but it shut down again. When I left it for a couple of hours powered off it lasted a bit longer when I powered it on and then again it went completely off (when this happens the screen completely goes black not like a normal power off where it shows a samsung logo then black screen). I dont have any clue why this is happening, if any of you experienced this before please let me know. Thanks in advance. (I'm heading off to a phone repair shop after the weekend, I figured out I'd ask here first to see if I'm missing something) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:39 PM PST I've seen that AOSP is available for my phone (Xperia 1) but I've never used it and I don't know if all Sony features will still be availible (960fps slow motion, 3d creator, cinema pro, dynamic vibrator, etc). So my question iare: Are all these special features still availible on AOSP? And does it take long to install and configure AOSP? And can AOSP be rooted? And should I use android 10 or 11? Android 11 is quite disappointing IMO, it lags really much, it is slower then Android 10 and it consumes much more battery. I hope this is not too much asked, but thanks in advance. I am a GNU/Linux user by the way so I do have some knowledge about the kernel. [link] [comments] |
Third party application markets and security Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:33 PM PST I installed a known third party application market to my phone and after a while it showed the apps which can be updated. When I clicked the update button android system didn't ask for a additional permission. My question is can these third party market app change my apps to malicious ones and steal my data. For example can it change my note taking app to their own and steam my notes or replace banking app to gain access to 2fa. Am I being paranoid here or installing a third party market is a huge security risk? To be clear I am curios about if a malicious market can do this without clicking the update button. Those of you who use a 5G network, what’s it like? Posted: 11 Mar 2021 06:37 PM PST What IS 5G like? Is it really fast? Is it a notable difference compared to 4G? Does 5G work in only certain cities in the US? How is it like outside the US? And does it work on certain carriers and devices? What Android devices use it? [link] [comments] |
Chrome will only download to private folder Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:24 PM PST I recently reset my phone which somehow gave me access to an OS update that wasn't available to me before the reset (I have a LG G8s). Now, Chrome will only let me choose between 2 options as a download location, "Android/data/com.android.chrome/files/Downloads/" on either the built in storage or sd card. I can't seem to change it to anything else, like the Downloads folder directly in the root. Also, it seems these folders are somehow private to the Chrome app. I can't even open a downloaded PDF in the Drive PDF Viewer from the downloads menu - though I CAN from a third party File Manager (FE File Explorer) and the Google Files app - though the only way to find the files there is to manually browse to the folder, they won't show up under any of the "Categories". If I try to open the file through the Downloads menu in the Chrome app itself, it'll launch the app and seemingly open the file, but even though the filename is displayed at the top, it just displays a black screen. Any tips? [link] [comments] |
How a screen unlock .zip file works Posted: 12 Mar 2021 12:52 PM PST Hello, So I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like everyone with a phone gets asked at least once, "Do you know how to unlock my phone?" by someone else who has locked themselves out. I don't have a problem here, but I was looking online to see if there was a definitive way to bypass a lock screen. These are a few of the methods I found:
It all depends on your phone which method you use, but most people haven't even heard of USB debugging and don't have it enabled, ruling out a number of ADB methods. Professionally made software like Dr. Phone won't always detect your phone connected through USB (I've had this happen before). Flashing a zip doesn't always work, as not all phones have their bootloaders unlocked and a TWRP availible. It seems like there are flaws to all of these methods, but does anyone have expertise in this area and know the best way to unlock a phone that doesn't have USB debugging on, doesn't have a custom recovery, and isn't rooted, without wiping its data? I think the answer lies in how a flashable zip file works. Sorry this post was so long, but if you feel compelled to share your knowledge you're awesome. [link] [comments] |
Simple noob question about browsing local files Posted: 12 Mar 2021 12:36 PM PST So, everywhere I look, they say just go to a browser and type file://sdcard to browse. Anything that I type in the browser bar does not actually go to the link or browse anything local. Instead, what it does is a google search. So, when I type in file:///sdcard/Downloads/my_page.html in the browser, it will do a google search on that instead of running the file. I'm sure it's something simple. I just don't what, and I can't find anything that says another way to do this other than typing it in the bar. [link] [comments] |
"AT&T Service Contacts" - Is there a way to remove this from the address book? Posted: 12 Mar 2021 12:21 PM PST For those that don't know, this is a contact that is permanent in your address book that has a list of AT&T Support numbers you can call. You are unable to block, delete, remove the numbers, etc. I haven't found anything by Googling it but I want it gone. Does anyone know of a way to rid myself of this AT&T crap? (PS: Galaxy S20 FE is my phone but I think only the carrier is relevant in this case) [link] [comments] |
eReading in this new Android world Posted: 12 Mar 2021 12:07 PM PST We're making the switch and the wife is going first (iOS refugees). My wife has just received her galaxy tablet. In our old world we would download a book using chrome and once it was downloaded the iPad would ask if we wanted to copy the book to iBooks....and we'd be off to the races. Is this possible here in "android world" or do we have to create a Kindle/Amazon account and send our books to a kindle email address? Is the simplicity we had possible here? I've downloaded a book on the Galaxy tablet and have opened 2 different ereader apps but don't see the book. Thanks in advance for any help. [link] [comments] |

Any way to revive a dead phone? Posted: 12 Mar 2021 11:44 AM PST I found my old Google Pixel 1 which I've since replaced with a Pixel 3 and then a Pixel 5 in the trunk of the car for some reason, so I thought I'd boot it up to see if it still works. Unfortunately, not only will it not boot (not surprising), it won't charge either. I remember I replaced it because the charging port was really finicky and it didn't support wireless charging. But it would be nice to be able to boot it up again, maybe I can make use of it as a streaming device or something like that! (The Pixel 3's battery is worn out and only lasts for a few hours, so that won't work all that well.) Is there any way to revive the Pixel 1 or is it junk? It has been sitting out in the car all winter... [link] [comments] |
