[Mod Post] Suggestion for distinguishing Original Content on the subreddit - need feedback

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 12:03 PM PST

I was thinking about adding an [OC] tag on the subreddit (OC for Original Content, for those unaware). Reddit's own OC flair is pretty much useless because you can only enable it on desktop. My plan would be to either use it alongside existing tags, or to create new, separate title tags.

Option 1: [OC] as a separate tag

In this case the [OC] tag in the title would be completely optional. If you've made a klwp preset yourself, your own widget, or even your own icons, you can use the [OC] tag. If everything in your setup is pre-made, like a widget pack, icon packs, wallpaper from unsplash, (I mean it's pretty obvious), then you cannot use the [OC] tag. Your post would be removed if you did.

If we went with this option, the title format would be as follows:

    [Theme][OC] My summer home screen

[OC] would be, again, completely optional, meaning it would not be possible to use it on its own in the title. Something like this

    [OC] My summer home screen

would be removed by automoderator for an invalid title tag.

Option 2: new set of OC tags

In this case we would have both the existing [Theme] [Wallpaper] [Icons] tags, as well as NEW [OC Theme] [OC Wallpaper] and [OC Icons] title tags. With those, the correct title format would be:

[OC Theme] My summer home screen

As for who can and who cannot use those, it's the same deal: there's a piece of original content (meaning YOU made it) in your setup: you can use it. Otherwise use the regular non-OC tags.

This solution is a bit cleaner visually, but the downside is we'd increase the number of title tags adding to existing 8, which is quite a lot already. Ever since the introduction of title tags u/kumquat_juice worked to simplify the system, and this would be kind of a step backwards. Then again, it might just work.

    Option 3: no changes

If you hate this idea, please do tell, we don't need to introduce this change if the majority of our community hates it.

    Why all of this?

Our community is growing, and it's no secret using existing widget packs is more convenient, and more approachable. But it would be a shame if our most dedicated members got burried among other submissions and had their work not be recognized. I believe it's important to distinguish original stuff because it takes hours, days, weeks to make perfect.

This is not meant to discourage anyone from posting, quite the opposite. The more people start noticing "OC" in the title, the more people will potentially be encouraged to try working on something of their own.

In short, this is a simple change that hopefully will result in an even more engaged community.

    But wait, there's more

We could also do monthly/bi-monthly highlight of the best OC themes. No crazy discussion or anything, but just a sticky post with links to top 5 or whatever most voted OC posts. This would once again help distinguish the original works and encourage more people to join the "cool kids club" :)

And last but not least, just to get it out there, using [OC] does not give the permission to advertise your own apps outside of what rule 7 says. If you've published an icon pack (or anything else) on Play Store, you're still required to use the [Promotion] tag and follow all of the rule 7 requirements. [OC] is NOT meant to be used for self-promotion.

If you've made it this far, awesome, I'd love to know your opinion! Maybe you have better ideas how to tackle this?

[WIP] Trying to make it clean but still useful

    Some info:

    • nova launcher
    • delta icons
    • wallpaper: sea, by keith camilleri (from delta wallpapers)
    • black player minimal widget

That's everything I need on the home screen, but I'm trying to make it clean without losing the usability. Any suggestions/opinions?
