TV Stick without pesky voice assistant

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:36 AM PST

I want to upgrade my old smart TV to be able to use all streaming services (it has prime & netflix but doesn't support disney+)

That about sums it up what I want to do. Stream and maybe use it as a better link between my smartphone, tablet and laptop.

And I specifically do not want a voice assistant, since they apparently listen even when they're not activated.

Ideally I want to spend less than 100.

Can you recommend any tv sticks with these requirements?

Android TV Remote Control keyboard doesn't work inside Netflix and YouTube apps.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:22 AM PST

It works just fine inside Disney+ and the main search screen though.

Can I fix it or is remote keyboard just not supported by those apps?

    Thanks!

I was prompted to update the software on my Sharp TV. Now the TV just shows the "android" logo and then makes a loud screeching noise at full volume before restarting. Any ideas?

Seriously regretting pressing OK for the software update right about now.

    Googletv delayed performance

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:36 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

Using my googletv for a month now and while I enjoy it, there's delays when I make actions, use features like the voice button, scroll through the interface. .

My AP only services 5 devices, and when using the Googletv it is the only device using bandwidth

Conversely when using my friend's googletv, it felt extremely snappy and the voice feature was almost instant with its results.

Has anyone else encountered this? How have you resolved it? My internet connection is great, 300/300 with no walls between the googletv and the router.

    Tv is the samsung TU8000

Hi, I've recently purchased the new Chromecast and I'm having some issues. At the top menu of the Google TV interface it doesn't show "for you", "movies" or "shows". I have no clue why my Chromecast has limited functionality. I live in Belgium, could this be for regional reasons?

Issues with Google TV on Shield (UK)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:59 AM PST

Hi all, I have installed google TV on my shield pro 2019 back in October and everything has been working fine until recently. Now I have the following issues that have appeared in the last few weeks:

    1. When using NordVPN, the google tv UI isn't loading anymore, I was using Surfshark before and it was loading fine, now with nord I only get the apps row and that's it, no recommendations. In Surfshark I was able to select individual apps to use the vpn, others would bypass it and google tv was loading fine with all rows and tabs. In Nord I can only select apps to bypass it and I can't select launcherx (google tv UI).
    2. All my Netflix recommendations are gone, now I only get prime, itv and iplayer recommendations and everything from netflix is only available to buy or rent through google tv (GFY google). It was working fine until about two or three weeks ago, I was able to see netflix recommendations just like prime and other services and was able to "watch now" in netflix. I have checked in my google services and netflix is selected.

I'm in the UK by the way. Anyone else having similar issues, what gives?

4k JVC lt-55mb508 controller stopped working. Help!

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:44 PM PST

Recently I've purchased a 4k jvc television lt-55mb508 on Carrefour. A week later the remote controller's bluetooth connection has gone and I've lost the Google Assistant feature. Then I found an Android TV controller app which was enough to use the Google Assistant feature. Some days later the remote controller stopped working completely (I tried to change its batteries and restart the TV).

That TV has a 4 year extended warranty, but when I've asked the customer services they said I must bring both the TV and the remote controller to the nearest authorized support facility.

The problem is: the TV was installed at my living room's wall by the tech guys from the store and I'm afraid of removing it from there by myself (and breaking it in the process).

The Android TV controller app is enough to navigate through the Android TV system and use the Google Assistant voice recognition, but it can't power on/off the TV. Is there a remote controller that could be used instead of the original one? Are there any apps that includes modern JVC TVs infrared configurations? Are there any alternative solution to power on my TV besides the above-mentioned ones?

PS: my smartphone's brand is xiaomi and it has infrared (sensor?), but xiaomi's remote controller app doesn't have a configuration that is compatible with my TV.

Mi Box 4 Controller dead on Wake-up. Change to Chromecast?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 04:06 PM PST

    Hey guys, need some help.

For Christmas, I setup a Mi Box 4 for my mother as she lives alone and wanted something to do.

Recently she's been having problems with what she called "freezes". She brought the box over to me and I found that occasionally, but especially when the box has been idle, the controller stop responding. The only way to fix it is to restart the box, or take the batteries out of the controller and put them back in, presumably to get the remote to ping the box again.

I've found the box works perfectly fine if I simply use the Android TV remote app on my Oneplus 8 Pro, and she could do the same on her Samsung S20FE, but she'd really rather use a physical remote (she's old school).

I've done some research and this seems to be a relatively common problem. The further problem being that this seems to be a problem just buying an after market remote won't necessarily guarantee a fix for...

I'm wondering if it's sensible to send this back to amazon and pick up a Chromecast instead. My second question is why the hell is a Chromecast so much cheaper than the Mi box 4? What are the restrictions?

I got the Mi Box for her specifically over the Amazon Fire so she could use the box the same as her phone, load apps on it and use her TV like a big phone. She's very technology phobic so anything complex is not a good solution for her (hence why she wouldn't just use the Android TV app for a remote).

Google TV + Stadia Controller + GeForce Now

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:59 PM PST

    Hi there!

I'm a very happy user of the google TV. I've been playing stadia and love it, there is however a very limited selection of games.

I've tried to install GeForce Now and play some games and it also works very nice.

I'm however now using a PS4 controller which introducties a couple of annoyances:

    • I need to pair the controller every time i want to play a game
    • I need to hard disconnect the controller every time i finish the game otherwise it just keeps burning battery until its empty
    • it's ugly AF.

Therefore I'd like to purchase a stadia controller. But i was wondering: - Am i able to use the stadia controller outside the stadia app ? - Is pairing the controller a single time sufficient and does it invoke a sleep function to preserve battery ? - Does the stadia controller work with GeForce now ?

Thank you all for the help!

    Kind Regards.

EDIT: The reason i'm asking this is because the ps (and xbox) controller work via Bluetooth, the stadia contorller works via WiFi, i don't know if this causes any (driver) issues ?

    Ethernet not working with MiBoxS

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:42 PM PST

    Hi!

These past days I've been trying to connect my MiBoxS with the ethernet cable as I've done many times in the past but it's no working. I've tried using different cables and USB hubs but nothing works, occasionally it will appears as it is connected but it only lasts for a few seconds, I've tried the same hubs and cables with other devices and they work perfectly. As I've said before I've done this many times before and until now it worked. I could really use some help using wi-fi with the MiBox is useless.

Where's the PAIR button on my silver Philips remote? (58PUS7304)

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 05:19 PM PST

I've got the 58" Philips PUS7304 TV and I honestly don't remember how I initially paired it, but it ended up disconnecting again in the long run.

Now I'm trying to pair it again to use the voice assistant functions. The manual and the Help guide on my TV state i have to press the PAIR button for 3 seconds when in pair mode however nowhere does Philips say what the pair button even is on the remote so if anyone knows that'd be great!

EDIT: This is the remote referenced

New GCCWGTV remove Disney recommendations ?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST

As the title suggests, does anyone have a solution? I don't have disney plus installed and may never, I don't want the recommendations, the settings are off and I still get these... Anyway to make it stop? It is my only complaint about the user experience at the moment.

Do I need the Mi Box S with sony tV?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:23 AM PST

Hi, I have a Mi Box S with an LG TV. I'm switching to an XH95 Sony TV. Is the box of any use for me when switching or is everything also on the TV and maybe even more powerful? Thanks.
