It was a fun thing to work on, so I wrote a short article about it and feel like sharing here.

Is night mode going to be mandatory?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:35 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I know it is not mandatory right now, but do you think it is going to be mandatory for newer Android versions given the "benefit" it is for users?

Should we, therefore, support night mode the sooner the better?

BTW, I'm a solo & just for fun dev, so my assumptions might be completely mistaken.

    Request: Android Dev Career Guidance

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:45 PM PST

    Hi, r/Androiddev.

I am a budding Android developer with about 1 year of web development experience, 6 months of Android development at a research institute, and about 6 months of self driven progress.

Currently, I am seeking clarity on the routes and avenues available to Android developers. From things like the differences between working for a company versus working for a development house to the viability of a freelance career, I would love to hear some experiences, what you loved/hated, somethings you wish you knew sooner in your career, etc. It really boils down to informational interview type questions.

Ultimately, I've found some passion for both web development and android programming, but I am unsure what to expect from each career path open to android developers and how to bridge these beginning steps into a full fledged career.

Avoid backing properties for LiveData and StateFlow

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:52 AM PST

Is Anyone Else Also Having Problems With the MutableStateFlow?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:55 AM PST

MutableStateFlow emission seems to be never received under certain circumstances whilst SharedFlow's is received under the same circumstance.

Does anyone have any idea why this behavior might be happening?

Do you use Scroll View with Constraint Layout?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:10 AM PST

I was about copying a Login screen from Adobe XD to Android Studio (I just start to learn about this) and I don't understand how you implement the Scroll View in these kind of situations where you can design everything with Constraint Layout except for that little scroll down to read "Already have an account? Sign in"

Pretty much all the tutorials I've watched they use Linear Layout and Relative Layout.

    How do you handle this?

First time trying to publish app - can't download internal test

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:35 AM PST

I'd like to start an internal test track. I think I have everything setup correctly.

When I go to the Internal Testing/Releases tab, it says it's "Available to internal testers" with a green checkmark. Going to the "Testers" tab there's a "Join on the web" link. When I open this on an android device I get a link to download the app. Tapping to install the app brings up the app store but it's just an infinite loading spinner.

I tried starting a "closed track" as well. Again, as far as I can tell I've done everything correctly. Under releases it says "under review". Does this mean Google has to review the build until the closed testing can begin? How long does this review process take? It's been "in review" for 3 days now.

why is my app not growing? genuine question

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:57 AM PST

    Hello,

this is not a self promotion post, but i would like to understand what i'm doing wrong and why i'm not getting many downloads from my app.

3 years ago (march 2017) i've released CastMix, a podcast player. I've put a lot of effort creating it but regardless what i do (improving user interface, clean design, new features,...), my app is not growing! My active users are 2-2.5k and daily acquisition is around 12-18 new users.

This isn't my first application, 6 years ago i created a music player, which has reached 900k downloads and despite not being maintained (since a year), it still gets more downloads than my main app (110-150 daily new users).

I would be happy if you could give me some advice on what you think I could do in order to increase the use of my application (i'm considering to pay for an advertising compaign, but i don't know if it's worth in the long run).

this is my app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ncaferra.podcast

    Play Store support response time

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:54 PM PST

Last week I sent a support request to change my uploader certificate. The form success message said it'll take around 2 business day for them to reply.

A week has passed with a complete silence from the support team. 2 days ago I sent another request, asking why does it take so long - no response to that either ofc.

Is that usual? Is there another way I can approach the support team? I have a pending app update to issue so this is very annoying ___^

How to check what games/apps are showing our game in their similar section? Not other way around

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:34 AM PST

Seems like they have removed the "popular"-top chart from Google play.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:38 AM PST

Most of my downloads for a new app was from discover while browsing and the app was top 10 in the popular category in my country so I guess it is fucked now.

    Oh well..

Is asking users to watch ads to fund future update against policies?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:44 PM PST

I have an unlockable "Coming Soon" DLC within my game. Since I have no sort of backing and my game relies on ads alone for revenue, I thought of some things :

    1. Put up a goal meter similar to kickstarter site, and all the user has to do is watch an ad so the goal meter fills up by one. I then reward them with an in game currency which they can use to unlock the DLC when it releases in the future.

    2. Adding an in app purchase where the user can be in the credits section of the game when he buys it. Kind of like a donation / supporter thing similar to patreon.

Are these against google and admob policy?

Best ways to store data for a texting app

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 03:57 PM PST

Hi I'm currently working on a texting app and was wondering what is the best way to go regarding storing data . Account created , login, message sent etc. I don't want to store it in a local SQL server since I would like to make the apps public once it's done. Do any of you have any recommendations with the best API or technology to do that ? Should I rent a server or use the cloud. Please help and thank you!

    Android Studio Basic Threads -> Thread Interruption;

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:03 PM PST

Hey guys, I read a bit about Threading but I seem to be missing something basic. Here's my Thread code:

     Thread t = new Thread(){ @Override public void run() { try { while (!Thread.interrupted()) { ///do stuff } dos.writeUTF("Disconnect"); System.out.println("Has Disconnect"); } catch (UnknownHostException e) { } catch (IOException e) { } } };

and here's my button code (which should interrupt the thread and should break the while loop, which supposedly should trigger the dos.writeUTF and the System.out.printIn

     @Override public void onClick(View v) { switch (v.getId()) { case R.id.btnConnector: t.start(); System.out.println("Connect"); break; case R.id.btnDisconnector: t.interrupt(); break; default: break; } };

Is it the case that the while loop is not running all the time? This seems to be obvious since when I try to Print something inside of it, it only gets printed once.Yet why do we need this while loop then?

Sorry if my question is confusing, but, if it is, it's probably because I'm a bit confused at the moment..
