With hangouts dying, what am i supposed to use to coordinate family communication?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:54 AM PST

So my family has iPhone's, so we can't use iMessage or FaceTime since I have android and we live now in different countries. At first we tried WhatsApp but this became complicated with all the phone number changes and the fact that WhatsApp Web isn't really a reasonable substitution for when you want to have a video call between laptops. Ethernet to ethernet can sometimes be useful/necessary as not everyone has fiber. Centralized solutions, though not great for privacy, are great for convenience.

Hangouts one click group video call was really nice. Meet's Rooms are a nightmare for GSUITE to begin with but they aren't even available for Google One...

So I guess what alternative centralized equivalent exists for androd user's trying to link up communications. Do we go back to Skype? Seems strange. Facebook messenger wouldn't work as my parent's don't have a FB. Maybe discord could actually work? I mean i guess it's got good text chat, call channels, and also video calls right?

    Gboard keeps Getting Dismissed

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:38 AM PST

This is a very strange problem on my Pixel 5. Gboard keeps getting dismissed as if I pushed back. I turned 'show on tap' on to see if it's a phantom touch but it wasn't that.

Gboard just had an update today but this problem began before any update to Gboard.

Here is a video showing the problem. Rebooting fixes the problem temporarily but it comes back randomly. What could be the problem?

Help needed: Best way to "lock down" an Android tablet for an elderly person?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:20 AM PST

My grandmother, over 90 years old and almost completely deaf, currently uses an old iPad with a messenger app in "guided access" mode, to look at family photos that we send to her. The iPad is completely locked down, i.e. the messenger cannot be exited, the iPad cannot be rotated. This is a built-in feature of iOS, and it appears as if a similar function is also available on Android. Also, when the magnetic display cover is lifted, the iOS lock screen is automatically skipped, and the messenger is opened.

This is already working quite good, but not good enough... for example, she may accidentally click somewhere which shows a dialog that she is then unable to close by herself. And explaining to her on the phone what she should do is not possible because of her bad hearing.

Basically, what I'd need is some kind of VNC server where I could remotely logon (completely unattended, i.e. there must be no popup of any kind on the device) and then get the tablet back to a working state again.

There are several commercial solutions, but of course I'd prefer something free. I think scrcpy seems to be what I'm looking for. My idea would be to:

    • enable ADB debugging, connect (once) locally via USB and enable ADB over WiFi
    • access the ADB console remotely through a VPN and control the tablet

What I'm not sure about is the behaviour of ADB after a device reboot. Is ADB over WiFi automatically started after a reboot? Or does the user need to re-enable it each time? If the latter, I guess there would be some way to achieve this by rooting the device and putting a custom script in some "autostart" location?

Lastly, is it possible to restrict areas on the screen that can be selected? Ideally, I would only like to allow certain areas to be selected, to avoid that she may accidentally delete a chat, or open some random dialog.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Any good Dbrand alternatives?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:13 AM PST

Okay, so I seek something to cover this awful Glastic back panel on my Galaxy M51 and Dbrand doesn't seem to support this model (yet?). Do you have any high quality/tested alternatives? Preferably from USA or European companies. Thank you in advance!

Is there any way for me to limit my fps to 15?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:41 PM PST

I made a gag game where the fps determine how hard to game is, making it easier on the worst possible phone you can find. is it possible for me to limit my fps on my screen to 15 without root?

if not, is rooting safe? what are the odds of me bricking my phone? I'd just like to keep that as a last resort though.

Android Go and how to avoid it

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:22 PM PST

I recently bought a budget smartphone with Android 10... or so I thought. I couldn't get my work phone app to work on it, then had a problem with the settings the error message took me to. I contacted support who told me that my phone OS was Android 10 Go, which is a scaled down version of Android and doesn't have all the functionality.

I looked back at the phone listing and it said in the header, summary and spec that it was Android 10. Only in a condensed text lower down did it say Android 10 Go. I contacted the seller and have got a refund on the basis that it wasn't made clear.

Is there any way to be certain the next phone I buy has the full Android 10? I can scour the small print and ask the seller - but can I also check for myself when I get it? The problem with using the work phone app as a test is that it's pretty flaky on any phone. I can't remember what the restricted settings were, to try those.

With the Android 10 Go phone, when I looked at System Update it said the OS was "Android 10" (although it had the restricted functionality of Go), which I found confusing. Is there any way to tell when I have a phone other than "see if anything doesn't work"?

    Thanks.

"do you want to allow access to cellular network?"

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:01 PM PST

Hello! Not sure if it's the right subreddit to post question like that so please excuse me. After updating my phone yesterday (MIUI update on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 8t) i'm having problem with one of the games i'm playing. When i'm trying to turn it on it shows a popup with the question from the title and the only option i can choose is "CANCEL" which of course closes my game. I tried installing the app again but it didn't do anything. Is there something i can do about it?

    Advice badly need

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:54 PM PST

I'm really at the end of my tether. I am a long time Android user who always buys a flagship device. My latest flagship (oneplus 8 pro) has been a massive disappointment due to poor battery performance. I'm in the process of looking for a new Android phone but is it me or is Android in a bad place at this moment. I'm in Europe so after been burnt more then once I refuse to buy Samsung exynos phones. The best phone I owned over the past few years was the Huawei Mate 20 pro but sadly they are out of the equation due to the Trump administration. I have checked out YouTube videos to bypass the lack of Google on their devices but I lost interest once I saw the size of the punch hole on the P40 pro and the mate 40 pro is out of my price range €1200.

So my dilemma is what phone do I go with? I have spent hours looking at reviews but no phone stands out. I don't game on a phone but as I said I always buy flagship for the premium feel Battery performance and features without going to funny money. I did seriously consider the pixel 5 but I wasn't impressed with the plastic finish.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions as I'm getting so desperate I'm worried I'm going to have to start considering Apple.

    Thanks for reading

Do purchased icon packs not have multi-device support?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:17 PM PST

I was surprised to find out that I was being asked to purchase an icon pack for installation on my other phone when I had already purchased it for my main phone. I use the same Google account on both phones. Is this how it works? An icon pack can be purchased only for the device it was purchased on? Then if I lose my phone, will I have to buy all the icon packs and games I have for my new phone again?

Edit - Solved. Okay, the problem was with Google taking some time to sync account information between devices. I was able to download and install the icon packs I had purchased without having to buy them again after some time. Really had me alarmed for a while.

Cannot reset lg icon pack to default

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:43 AM PST

So as stated in the title I saw that my android phone could have custom icons which are obtained through the lgsmartworld app. I downloaded a starlit night icon pack and applied it but it's not that good. Upon trying to set to default I could not take the icon pack off.

I looked at the reviews (which in hindsight I should have done to begin with) and saw that nobody else could remove the icon pack. When the support responded to a review they said go to wallpaper and theme press icons then simply press on the default pack.

However, much like everyone else, there is no default pack and only the starlit night icon pack. It is impossible as far as I can tell to remove and I even tried disabling the lgsmartworld application but it did nothing. I really want these awful icons gone but I cannot find any solutions anywhere.

    Fixed

My brother showed me that the default icons were included with the default theme. So if anyone has issues changing their android/lg icons back to default go to wallpaper & theme then press theme not icon to change your icon pack back to default. These also changes your wallpaper but that can still be independently customized. Why they did not put a default icon option under icons I will never know but at least there's a solution.

    Unlock a carrier locked phone

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:24 AM PST

I recently bought a prepaid TracFone LG Solo on Amazon. I am not much of a technophile so having an inexpensive phone that can get the job done is good enough for me.

I use TMobile and I want to switch my SIM over to this new LG phone, I know that I would need to contact TracFone and ask for the unlock code which I have no problem doing. According to them, I need to have the TracFone service activated and in use for 1 year before they can provide an unlock code. I am not sure if this is allowed or not since I thought the whole carrier locking thing was ended in 2014. In any case I really just want to use my own carrier, this is a prepaid phone (no contracts or payment plans) so I think its fair to say that I should be entitled to use this phone with my preferred carrier.

How can I unlock my carrier phone if the carrier has all these weird conditions? I don't care if I have to root/jailbreak; I just want to use my phone.

    New Android User

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:22 AM PST

Switched to Android with the purchase of my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 after almost 9 years in the Apple ecosystem. Wish I had done it a lot sooner. I also bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 light. My question is if there's any way to sync the tablet and phone together in a way where I can switch between the two and have everything the same? I don't exactly know what to call it. I remember when I used to have an iPad there was a way so that any app I would download on my phone would automatically download on my iPad and vice versa. Is there anything like that on Android/Samsung? Thanks for any info!

Can you still rearrange your buttons in Gboard 10.x?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:26 AM PST

I've got two phones, a Galaxy S9 with Gboard 9 and a Moto Edge with Gboard 10.

The Gboard 9 phone has rearrangeable buttons: https://i.imgur.com/jPiPv1p.png

The Gboard 10 phone does not allow buttons to be rearranged.

Is this a settings issue, a difference between devices, or just a dropped feature?

I keep receiving missed calls early in the morning from random numbers. They look like mobile phone numbers, but have 1 too many digits...

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:36 AM PST

Apologies if this doesn't qualify as an Android question (if it doesn't qualify, can anyone direct me to a more appropriate sub?)

I've received 3 random missed calls early in the morning, around 8am, on different days from a number that looks like a mobile number, but it has 1 too many digits. Different number every time.

Today it was 07803 3219683. They never leave a message.

When I search on the internet, nothing comes up. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

    Possible storage corruption?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:22 AM PST

So recently I've been noticing that my redmi note 5 pro running havoc os 3.7 is kinda acting up, the settings app takes a long time to show all the menus and options. And today I woke up to open discord, nothing happened on first try, next try said "com.discord.app.App keeps stopping". Then I realized that all the apps that I've moved to the sd card is not working either, same error. I did format the sd card as internal storage so I am highly suspicious that the sd card is dying somehow. I also cannot download things from chrome, it just shows failed and in the notification, it shows "pending for network".

But the weird thing is that all my pictures and files are all accessible through the built-in file explorer but I cannot copy it to my external otg usb stick. I copied all my pics and stuff via orangefox recovery and all the files seem to be intact. Right now I am afraid to format/forget this sd card because I would still like to keep the data on it and keep using it at least for a few days.

So what is exactly wrong here? I have no idea where the problem lies right now but I am thinking its either the sd card failing or the file system messed up something. And can I format another sd card as internal storage without forgetting my problematic one? Any help is appreciated.

Why won't my refurbished AT&T LG V40 get Android 10 when the same model DOES have Android 10?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:11 AM PST

My "old" AT&T LG V40 ThinQ (model LM-V405UA) has a badly-cracked screen, but still works. I purchased a refurbished one (same model) and can't get it to update to Android 10.

When I go to "Update Center" then "Software Update" then "Check for software updates" then "Check now for update", the dialog box shows, "You are using the latest software version for current OS."

If that were true, why does my "old" (cracked) phone have Android 10?

I didn't do anything special to get 10 on the original phone - periodically I would get notified that a system update was available and I'd go ahead and install it.

Before you ask, it's not that I -NEED- the update, it just seems odd that my "new" phone won't get the newest software.

I've cycled power multiple times over the last 24 hours, just to see if the system would recognize it's time for an update, but no luck so far.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

Google Assistant not listening to Bluetooth mic

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:49 AM PST

So forever I've been trying to get my Google assistant to work with my mic but cannot get it to do it. I can get the phone to hear me say "Hello Google" but if the phone js far from me and I have a Bluetooth headset on it won't understand what I say so I'm assuming it's using the phones mic instead. On the Google assistant app I have the Bluetooth setting on.

Is it possible to reroute the sound output from headphones to speakers?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:35 AM PST

The headphone jack of my phone (Samsung Galaxy A50) is gone. I used some cheap headphones for a day, and of course they broke... Now the plug is perma penentrating that hole.

Which means that the phone thinks that there are headphones attached, even though there are none.

(So far I've been getting some sound out by keeping on a Discord call in speaker mode but I doubt that this is sustainable in the long term)

Same issue with my microphone, it tries to use an external microphone that I don't actually have.

    Any help appreciated <3

How to turn off WiFi scanning and Bluetooth scanning once GPS is turned off using macrodroid?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:21 AM PST

I am referring to the background scanning which Google does which even when WiFi and Bluetooth are turned off, it continues to check availabile WiFi networks and Bluetooth devices.

For macrodroid, my trigger would be turning off GPS. The action would be Device Settings >> System Settings as far as I can gather. I am not able to find which system "setting key" should be changed, and what should be the value of the variable.

    Appreciate any help.

AFAIK the cause of screen burn-ins is degradation of blue pixels. Does that mean blue-light filter (aka 'Night shift', 'Night mode') prevents screens from burning?
