Good looking open-source launcher for elderly or people that want a simple launcher, BaldPhone

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:45 AM PST

BaldPhone is a free & open source platform which replaces the phone's interface into a big, simple, and friendly one, suited for elderly and for people with other difficulties, disabilities or anyone that wants a simple launcher.

    Video

    Screenshots of version 11.9.1

    Website (info & Download)

    f-droid (download)

GitHub (Anyone can contribute, + download)

It has a built-in updater so you aren't reliant on app-store services (you don't need to have play store account). Themes: Light, Dark, Adaptive, where adaptive turns on the dark mode at the evening and switches to light theme in the morning.

    Contribution:

    • If you want to help translate it to another language, it's pretty simple and straightforward: Translating
    • If anyone wants to contribute with ideas, programatically with features, bugs, or with building a website etc. there's a Baldphone Issues github page
    • If you would like to support this project and developer, you can donate: https://www.patreon.com/baldphone

    Other links:

PS. I'm not the author, i just really like this program, because i've been trying other "free" and paid solutions before for my parents and it didn't really work out. Then i saw Baldphone on some sub post, it is Open-source, i like that it has built-in updater, simple gallery, i hope it gets good development support.

    Edit: added dark mode info.

Do you think Android TV's should have supported Stadia along with the Chromecast?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 02:49 PM PST

A thought popped into my mind and I stared thinking why Android TVs weren't supported at the launch of Stadia, it would make more sense so people who already have Android TVs don't want to get a Chromecast to play on their TV.

New "Watched It?" Option on Google

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:39 AM PST

I've noticed recently that when I search for a movie on Google there's an option to click "Watched it?" to show that I've seen the movie. I'm wondering when this was added, if it's part of an app or something, and how I can see a list of all the movies I've marked as watched?

    Can we talk 2020 flagships?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:13 AM PST

What are your predictions for 2020? What do you think 2020 will bring to the world of smartphones? What would you like to see?

    For myself, I think that:

    • 120Hz screens will be pretty much the norm for the flagships in 2020. The iPhone is bringing it, Galaxy S is bringing it, others will have to as well if they want to compete.

    • I am hoping that the push for larger camera sensors continues. We can thank Huawei for that.

    • Pixel 3a was amazing! If Pixel 4a keeps the same recipe and brings 128GB of UFS storage, I think it'll be a big success!

    • The same goes for Galaxy S10e successor. Great compact (by modern stardards) phone.

    • Google has to do something with Pixel 5. Their main selling points are stock Android and the camera. They've been caught up to and even overtaken in the camera department. They really need to upgrade the sensor. There is only so much they can get out of the current sensor using software.

    • I also hope for no more useless gimmicky tech like Pixel 4's hand gestures. Imagine how much time Google wasted on that. If manufacturers want to experiment, sure go ahead, but not in the main flagship of the phone.

    • If we talk a bit about Android's competitor. I think Apple will make another huge leap with the iPhone 12 like they did will 11. I think 12 might be an even bigger leap. I am just hoping that the port-less iPhone is nothing but a rumour. You know all Android manufacturers would copy it and I really want my Type-C.

    • I'm sure there will be more folding phones. I personally have no interest in them.

    • I don't think graphene batteries will make an appearance yet.

    • I'm not sure what's going to happen to Huawei. But they really pushed the innovation envelope and it would be nice if they resolved their issues with the US. They really lit a fire under everyone.

    • It'll be great if more manufacturers add an under screen touch sensor. Face-ID is nice, but I still prefer the finger print sensor.

    • Finally, here's something I would like to see less of: Notches (just use a pop-up camera). Curved screens - They look great in ads, but are a downgrade in terms of usability.

We need another software keyboard revolution (Autocorrect still sucks)

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 02:58 PM PST

Remember when Swype first launched? It was like magic! Gesture typing blew people's minds, and for many, no one could look back at tap-typing ever again.

The next big software keyboard breakthrough was 'Cloud Predictions'. A.I.Type is the first keyboard I'm aware of to utilize the Cloud in offering up contextual predictions.

Lastly, the biggest breakthrough we've had so far (in my opinion, of course) is real artificial intelligence/neural network implementation. Swiftkey was the first to implement neural network functionality into an Android keyboard. However, the downside was that it's only used for contextual predictions. Not for autocorrections.

I really want to see Autocorrect reach a new level of accuracy. If I swipe a word, autocorrect should know what word I'm meaning to swipe based on history and context. Heck, even if it means an entirely new way to type. Voice typing is pretty fantastic, but I like the tactile feel of typing on a device. Plus, you don't want everyone hearing what you're saying to people lol.

So we start with tapping. Then moved to gesture typing. What's next? Are we stuck on gesture typing for the foreseeable future? If we are, when are the big software keyboard companies (Google - Gboard, Microsoft - Swiftkey) going to fully implement neural networks and AI for mind-blowing autocorrections?
