Smartphones after 6+ years and other things that manufacturers don't like people to know

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:06 AM PST

One weekend ago I wanted to test some specific custom phone ROMs out there but in the first stage I was prepared to do (potentially more destructive) tests only on the oldest Android phone I still have - a Samsung Note 3 N9005 from 2013.

So I went ahead and updated it to the latest Samsung stock (Android 5.0 from 2015 - before Samsung switched to 3 years of security updates for the flagships, old stuff but it was needed to be certain the phone has the latest baseband/modem and other separate firmware). Needless to say - security update was ancient and it was open to attacks like WiFi KRACK and probably tons of other newer attacks. Speed was not that great but that was to be expected for a device of that age.

Then I tested with two Android projects that sounded very cool - the very first one was /e/ (formerly Eelo), which is based on LineageOS but with certain improvements for privacy and for a digital life where Google does not know everything about you. It was mentioned somehow recently in articles like this or this but also discussed here and a response here.

The install was in my experience simple enough (first of the above articles is saying it is not that easy, but perception of easy can be very different) and things started quite nicely, the phone was definitely snappier than with the Samsung stock firmware and all things I tested seemed to work fine. The experience was somehow limited since Google was kept outside it - on purpose.

And then I tried a more exotic project - HovocOS 3.0 - a project based on Android 10 AOSP (with credits for LineageOS and a lot other projects) and "inspired by Google Pixel". The project has some excellent developers and maintainers - you can see those in the link above.

Installation is a little more complex (since it is an earlier beta and on Android 10 OpenGapps is still a moving target) but in the end things went fine installing BiTGApps as some people in the XDA forum were suggesting.

And this one was the special surprise - a few days back when I was playing with that I did have Android 10 with November 5 patch level on my Pixel 2XL but my (more recent) Note9 was on Android 9 November 1 patch level and the Poco F1 has only got the October 1 patch (also on Android 9). But the Note 3 from 6+ years ago now was also having Android 10 with November 5 patch level just like the Pixel, and a default launcher that was very much like the default Pixel launcher (which I normally replace with Apex Launcher Pro for consistency among all my phones, but on the Note3 I decided to give it a chance).

Anyway - long story short my "old relict" phone was now probably snappier than it ever was in the past (newer ART versions probably help) and on the latest security patch available to the public. It is almost as usable as any of my other phones from the signature (and in fairness with 3 GB RAM it is also the closest to the Pixel2XL from all my Android phones, all other Android phones have 6 GB RAM and that shows).

So why all this long story? Well, first of all to point that the level of updates in the normal commercial phones is a matter of commercial choice and not of technical choice - manufacturers try to support phones for the absolutely minimal amount of time they can get away with, and for the people that are not prepared to live unprotected the easy choice is just to upgrade to the latest (usually expensive) phone.

The other reason is to point to the fact that the Samsung Note3 has a removable battery (it is not even the last Note to have that, the Note4 is). And that means that the phone could probably last on open-source Android projects with up-to-date security for as long as I can still find a replacement for the batteries - which unfortunately in itself no longer seems so easy, most of what I could find was inexpensive stuff of dubious quality. But the point remains - good phones could vastly outlast the "planned obsolescence" built into them, but in the absence of significant regulation this "planned obsolescence" will just continue to creep-in and contribute to the increased amount of technological waste and pollution around us.

    EDIT:

I forgot to add two links that I had saved for this post - not affiliated in any way with either one. First - if you are serious about security you might want to take a look at /r/GrapheneOS/. And if you missed this (good) video - here Dave Lee makes the point that (at least some) Apple phones "age" better - that is probably true with "stock software" but as this test points out it is a result of dubious software policies from Android manufacturers and not from anything intrinsic to Android itself.

PSA: Samsung Galaxy Note10+ 256GB Unlocked (US version with warranty) at Microsoft Ebay store - $699 (Lowest ever - probably pricing error)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:36 AM PST

I'm not sure if direct links are allowed but here is the Microsoft store link - https://www.ebay.com/str/microsoftstoreoutletusa

Link to product (multiple colors available search the store) - https://m.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-Note10-Black-256GB-US-Model-Unlocked/283589253128

Does not come with Galaxy buds like the black friday offer but that was priced at $899.

Weirdly, both Note 10 and Note 9 are priced higher than Note10+.

I've been tracking Note 10/10+ prices for two weeks now for blackfriday time deals. My plan was initially to get one from the US to India with but even at this price it's kinda on the expensive side. And after looking at some Laptop deals, I've decided to go for OnePlus 7/7t and get a laptop from USA. But at this price, this is probably the best android phone you can buy. You lucky Americans.

Andronix - Desktop Linux no root needed, works on any 5.1 and up Android device.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 04:57 AM PST

For anyone who's used Linux on DeX and is upset they canceled it, I found an excellent replacement on the play store called Andronix! Let's you install a bunch of different distro's through termux. I've been using it the past few days now and I'm very happy with it! Running Debian 10 on my Note 9 with the dex pad connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers.

does nobody care about microphone specs?! which phones have the best internal mic and how do i find this information?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:45 AM PST

I use my phone to record live music footage more than I use it for anything else. Having a good microphone is crucial but it seems like most manufacturers don't even bother listing microphone specs. Video from my LG G6 sounds great (but looks awful😬) and the spec sheet lists this:

HD Audio Recorder 24bit / 192KHz FLAC Hi-Fi Record with high AOP Mic Up to 132dB

Is there any kind of resource that will help me find this information for other phones and compare them? I'm not that interested in bringing an external mic with me everywhere I go unless that's really my best option. I've looked through gsmarena and a few manuals but I've had no luck with some of the big brands. help?

Those who use OPPO or Realme phones, what are the limitations of ColorOS that actually affect you?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 05:48 AM PST

ColorOS gets a lot of flack by Android people for looking and acting different to Stock Android. Is there anything different in terms of what it can't do compared to stock Android, or do people dislike it just because it looks different?

Android Haptic Feedback - Is It Always Inferior to iPhone?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:54 PM PST

I'm never a fanboy of Android and nor iPhone. In the past, I have owned, Xperia x8, iPhone 3g, galaxy s2, iPhone 6,6s, note4, htc one, galaxy s7, oneplus 5t, iPhone xs max, and iPad. Due to the nature of my job, I'm always carrying 2 phones. My workplace gives me an iPhone 7 as a work phone. Along the way when I switch back to the iPhone and Android, there is one thing that I notice. The haptic in the iPhone is way way more superior to android. Granted that I doesn't have the latest android but I do test my friend OP 7 Pro, S10 and Note10 and it still bad compared to iPhone, even the iPhone 7. In my country Google Pixel is very rare, hence I couldn't compare it.

My question is: Is this always the case? Is android manufacturer couldnt create a better haptic for android? Or it is just me?

What kind of "specialized" phones would you make?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 06:25 AM PST

I was thinking about how before the global smartphone takeover, phones used to have some insane variety. Now with folding screens on the way I feel like we could see cool varied smartphones coming back and I was thinking about what sorts of designs we could see in the future.

Right now all companies seem to have mostly converged on "all rounder" phones. Pixel 3a was a glimmer of possibility for me: here we have a phone that has lower end specs but justifies its price by specialising with camera performance. And the performance is actually excellent. Maybe we will see more niche phones in the midrange? I know China phones have obliterated traditional price categories though.

What kind of gimmicky niche devices would you make? I am genuinely interested in hearing of wild concepts.

I thought maybe a company could cheap out on the screen (usually the single biggest cost concern in a phone) and on the chipset (second biggest) but just focus on powerful camera parts to make a ~500 camera powerhouse that is driven by software processing and multiple cameras. For example a monochrome camera + IR camera + wide angle + telephoto in a square configuration so you can get awesome low light and have other nice additions as well. Slap a phat sensor on the back for the regular lens and give it a THICC battery.

But that's a pretty basic idea.

Edit: Okay I thought of another cool idea. Imagine the form factor of the iPhone SE, side edgeless and the top and bottom bezel are front facing stereo speakers. Headphone jack, slightly thicker for extra battery, OIS single camera, virtual bumpers for gaming. Like a Gameboy Micro.

    Lawnchair V2 vs Nova

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:13 AM PST

I've used Nova Prime for over a year now and like it, but I've heard good things about Lawnchair and now that it's available on the Play Store, I'm considering switching.

This is a thread to compare the two launchers.

Which do you prefer and why?

    Is Android tablet development dead?

Almost never see a new tablet with updated processors or RAM. Many models I look at seem to have been production for years. Is the Android tablet dead?

    Your alternative headphones connection?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 12:42 PM PST

Since more models are getting rid of 3.5mm analog output, what is your preferred alternative audio connection?

BT seems to be convenient, but audio lag when playing games is unacceptable.

I like using USB C digital headphones even it's rather clumsy (need an adapter), but audio is much better, and I can even use Apple headset with Lightning plug with compatible adapter from Anker.

    What connection you prefer more?
