4 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 128)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:37 AM PST

Welcome back, fellow mobile gamers. I hope the Thanksgiving / Black Friday stress is over, and if you're looking for a new game to relax with this Sunday the 1st of December - here's a few of the best I've played last week. As always, I have covered 4 mobile games this week, and this post is my documentation of what I think about each of them.

This week's episode includes a fun monster slingshot game that feels like a mix between Airhockey and Pokemon, a team-based 8bit RPG perfect for the min-maxer in all of us, a new Tennis sports game that has been taking the mobile market with storm, and lastly, PewDiePie's newest creation; a strategy RPG called PewDiePie's Pixelings.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 128 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Capsulemon, Fight! [Game Size: 354 MB] (free)

    Genre: Action / Slingshot / Airhockey-like / RPG - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Capsulemon is a "monster slingshot" game, much like "The Hustle Castle", which means we sling our team of creatures across the airhockey-like playing field to damage opponents and trigger combo attacks.

The gameplay is fun, combat is fast-paced and looks visually pleasing, and the monsters we select for our team all feel distinct. To my big surprise, the game even features a tiered reward system WITHOUT a battle-pass subscription for additional rewards, and lootboxes that we don't have to wait to open.

PvP is real-time, but paying users can definitely pay-to-progress-faster, so I recommend sticking to the singleplayer mode until you've unlocked enough monsters and leveled them up. I hope more singleplayer content will be added in the future to accommodate those of us who love the core gameplay but don't want to worry about the fairness of PvP.

Last Cloudia [Game Size: 980 MB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / 8-bit / Team-based - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review: [NOT GLOBALLY RELEASED]

Last Cloudia is a high-quality 8-bit team-based RPG with an above-average interesting combat system and a lot of depth to each character, making the game perfect for min-maxers.

During combat, we switch between our 3 characters at any time to use their different attacks, with the rest meanwhile being controlled by an AI. This system makes the game feel fast-paced and action-packed.

Each character's abilities have beautiful animations, and unlocking more heroes happens through a gacha system, which does mean that PvP will never be 100% fair. However, maxing out a character doesn't take more than 10-14 days, which is significantly less than other team-based RPGs, and so the monetization is on the lighter end of the spectrum for the genre.

If you want to learn more, the game has a decently sized sub-reddit with lots of beginner tips and strategies.

Tennis Clash [Total Game Size: 354 MB] (free)

Genre: Tennis / Sports / Action - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Tennis Clash is a multiplayer 1v1 sports game with simple, fast-paced gameplay, and a Golf Battle-like high-stake combat system where we bet in-game gold to enter a match, with the winner taking it all.

I enjoyed the well-executed control system, which is easy to get used to as a casual player, yet allow us enough to control to make the game feel skill-based, which means advanced players can actually become good at the game by increasing their swiping precision and predicting the opponent's next move.

Winning a match gives us a lootbag that after 3-8 hours of waiting (or paying to open immediately), rewards us with equipment pieces for our character. We need multiple of the same piece to level it up - just like in Clash Royale.

The matchmaking system uses a league mode, which means we should - theoretically - always be matched against players on our own level, but my biggest concern is the one-time-use powerful "strings" that can be bought through iAPs. They will inevitably ruin the fairness of the PvP.

PewDiePie's Pixelings [Total Game Size: 490 MB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / Strategy / Turn-based / PvP - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Pixelings is PewDiePie's new strategy turn-based RPG where we defeat level after level with a team of - mostly - PewDiePie-related characters, level up our team, and fight other players in real-time PvP.

During combat, our Pixelings automatically charge up and attack, whereas we spend our time on re-positioning, or even switching out, our Pixelings to optimize damage output and prevent dying. A system that would be really interesting, if not the combat was insanely slow-paced.

Between combat, we wait for lootboxes to open to acquire more of the same Pixeling, so that they can be leveled up and grow stronger.

Monetization means the PvP is pay-to-progress-faster, but you can't buy anything you can't also grind through normal gameplay - if you have the patience. Lots and lots of patience!... Oh, and there's an energy system too. Yuck...

What happened to tower defense games??

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:53 PM PST

I've played just about all the highly recommended TD games at length, but most of them are several years old, and it seems like TD games in general are dead.

Yes, I wouldn't mind some good TD game recommendations from the last couple years, but I'm more curious as to what happened to them. It was like they were really popular and then, all of a sudden, nobody was making them.

Hello! Any recommendations for those games that take no brain power, or to play while doing something else (like watching tv, listening to podcasts, etc)? Thanks!

[REQUEST]Simple browser-like games where you manage an army with RPG elements.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:50 AM PST

Back in 2010' or even more, there was those games you could play on your internet browsers. The ones I'm looking for is very simple, yet need some tactics to overcome your opponents.

Its not 2D or 3D, only text written and few images to represent tools/units/buildings. At first you have little money to build your barracks, and your units. More units = more power. Stronger buildings = bigger capacities for your army.

Then you get 10 attacks allowed per hour, you can attack up to 3 times the same player. If you win you take his gold.

That simplicity that I miss. Any chances games like that exist in the Android world ? Much obliged.

    Rebel Racing 1st impressions

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:40 AM PST

Hi. I wanted to share my 1st impressions about Rebel Racing. This is based on about 3 days playing experience so don't get me for granted.
Graphics are amazing, Races are a lil bit short but I saw in the comments that they are getting longer later in the game.
I don't know about p2w aspect yet to be honest.
Overall this is a game if you want to kill 10 minutes of your time if you have a break at work.
1st impressions are good. I recommend it.

    Best Multilingual keyboard?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:17 AM PST

I'm looking for some recommendations on keyboards. I have used SwiftKey and Gboard and have the same issue with them. I switch between writing in four languages (Danish, Norwegian, English and Mandarin) and I always switch to the keyboard for the respective language. Even so, both keyboards quickly start mixing words from the different languages into the dictionary for each language. I find this very annoying, especially because Danish and Norwegian are very similar in spelling, but rarely the same.

Is there a setting that enforces the keyboard to only write in the specific language, I don't mind if I have to lose the feature of my "own" words bring added. Or is there a keyboard that handles this well?

    Thank you :)

Type of games like Ridiculous Fishing, Holedown, and Learn to Fly (PC)?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:32 AM PST

I'm not really sure what genre those are called but they are my favorite. Essentially you do something similar throughout the whole game but you slowly get upgrades that let you do better the next round thanks to upgrades.

I know incrementals are a thing, but those are almost always just tapping or sitting and waiting. If prefer it where you're actually playing a game if you know what I mean.

    Thanks in advance!

Games with buttons that can be repositioned?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 03:46 AM PST

So I recently bought a pair of mobile phone triggers for games like PUBGM, COD M, and Shadowgun. It works really well (for the most part*) but shooters is hardly the only genre I play so I was wondering if anyone knew of other games that featured moveable buttons so I could use my triggers with them?

I'm looking for games other than shooters like ARPGs, platformers, brawlers, etc but if you have a good shooter recommendation, I'd gladly accept those too. The only requirement is they have buttons I can move to be placed under the triggers (top left and right)

Thanks in advance for the help. Trying to google along these lines has been a bit of a nightmare.

    • P.S. One last question about triggers. They work really flawlessly for PUBG but for CODM and Shadowgun, I find they run into multi-touch issues. Meaning when I'm moving around, AND panning the camera, the triggers don't seem to want to respond. I have to either stop moving or looking around to be able to ADS and/or shoot with my triggers. I don't know if it's a game issue, as they seem to work like 10% of the time, but the other 90% the problem occurs pretty consistently. Anyone else have this problem/know of a fix?

Turn-based strategy game: Civ Rev 2, Worms 2, or This is the Police? Other suggestions would be great!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:36 PM PST

I'm itching to get a turn-based strategy game on my phone. Saw the above on sale for I think Black Friday Deals.

Some of my favorite turn-based ones are: Pokemon TCG, Devil Survivor, Invisible Inc, Slay the Spire (the best!) and Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle (gotta love the lightheartedness!). I also have Civ 6 on my iPad.

I have a love/hate relationship witb Civ (and consequently Battle of Polytopia actually) since they're so much time eaters. With 4X really haha, same could be said for Stellaris.

I already have the ff. on my phone: - Hoplite (is great! But the challenges after the main game is a bit off for me since it seems to be just memorization. I love this roguelite) - Battle of Polytopia (is ok haha) - Ticket to Ride (this is so much heart <3) - Card Crawl (same problem as Hoplite but also great)

I favor easy to get into but still strategic games. I don't really have that much time haha.

I didn't list X-COM even if it's also on sale, since the graphics/concept are too harsh for me or I don't like realistic creepy/violence.

Thanks in advance to anyone who'll reply! :D

[REQUEST] Game like Wordscapes, but for young kids?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:29 PM PST

I've searched and searched, but am coming up empty. Do you know of a game like Wordscapes but is for young kids? Ideally it focuses on words 4 letters or less, but has similar mechanics.

This is meant to be for Amazon tablets, but if it's not available on the Amazon app store, I can happily sideload it from the Play store. Also happy to pay for an ad-free and quality version.

Any suggestions and recommendations to keep our 4 and 5 yr olds trying to spell words would be extremely welcome!
