Feeling cheated with OnePlus 8 Pro camera reviews

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 10:02 AM PDT

    Hey,

I posted a similar topic on OnePlus subreddit but I think here it may reach more people. Basically, I got the OnePlus 8 Pro yesterday and took some photos of my dog. Results were pretty bad. Images seem overprocessed as hell and colors are oversaturated. I posted an imgur album that shows this. Look at his hair and grass in the distance on the ultrawide photos, they are smudgy and blended together.

    Imgur album

This was done with previous OxygenOS version (5.8), I installed 5.9 manually for my EU version of the phone in the evening (had no OTA update notification so I used a package).

Today I made a comparison of color to show how green scenery looks with stock camera app and gcam app with HDR+ on. Oversaturation just hurts the eyes. Gcam is very close to real life.

    Another imgur album

And for the last treat I made a comparison of OnePlus 8 Pro and my old phone, Galaxy S7. HDR is better on the OnePlus 8 Pro (shadows definitely, sky) but the detail sucks and dog's hair is again blended together in places. I would risk to say that Galaxy S7 took better pictures. Things being out of focus is understandable due to large sensor but at the same time things in focus don't always have the best detail.

    Last imgur album

These may be mostly quite ideal conditions when it comes to lighting and there is no doubt that 8 Pro takes way better images in the lower light scenarios but to be honest for a 900 dollar phone I expected way more in the day lightning. I don't know how much of that can be attributed to post processing (which can be improved by software updates in the future) but I don't think I will be waiting to find out before my return window closes.

Reviews of this phone are saying that the camera is stellar so I'm feeling cheated a little. Maybe I expected DSLR quality for some reason (I only have Nikon D3400 that I haven't shot with for some time now) but why does my 8 Pro take, at time, worse pictures than a 4 year old flagship with an older sensor. Is this a defective unit or does the community have a similar experience.

    Cheers

[AMA] I'm one of the original founders of the "frank" phone, AMA

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 10:28 AM PDT

If any of you guys remember the failed frank phone from 2017 that was met with a lot of controversies, well I'm the original founder. It was a tiny blip in the tech community and didn't end up getting to production. Ask me anything, and I'll answer with full honesty.

    The IP rating gimmick

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:57 AM PDT

I don't understand the whole marketing of IP water resistance rating as a marketing tool and people considering that in their buying checklist. If your phone were to get water damaged, IP rating or not, it's not getting fixed by the company for free. If even because of a few drops of rain, water enters your phone, the IP rating doesn't give you any advantages over non IP rated phones. Either companies give a warranty on water damage, or what is even the use of a certification.

What do you think? Should IP rating be a concern while buying a new phone or is it just a new way companies can charge customers higher prices?

If it have a good response by the community it is really probably that we are going to get a new smaller options a few months later.
