Nobody does a comparison/review of USB transfer speed anymore

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 11:00 PM PST

I normally transfer stuff to my phone via USB cable. When looking for a phone, USB3 is the priority. Unfortunately, not many phone companies advertise the USB spec of their USB-C port. Almost all budget and mid range phones USB-C ports have the transfer speed of the old USB2.

To make things worse, phone with USB3 comes bundled with USB2 cable. WTF ? I've checked with Huawei (since they are the biggest in China) if they even have a USB3 cable kit for sale. The answer is NO.

I know wireless transfer and cloud backup is the trend nowadays. Perhaps I'm just old school with the tried and tested manual sync with my desktop FreeFileSync program.

    Les talk about #AndroidOne

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 10:33 AM PST

So the biggest draw was faster updates after the Pixel line up. Besides stock Android options at reasonable price points and since Pie we have had betas of OS where other phone companies have been enrolled as well. Heck even today the state of Android One phones is that they are still at 9.0 Pie while most phone companies have updated their phones (in beta) and even final update on Android 10. (Redmi, OnePlus, Honor, Huawei, etc)
So do you think this is the biggest failure of #AndroidOne phones?

Simplified explanation of the new camera vulnerability

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 03:50 AM PST

The news articles and even the video from the security company seem to overcomplicate the issue to the point where you can't actually guess what the problem is, so I thought about making this post.

An Android app can either request the camera permission and create its own camera interface, or it can request the system camera app to take a photo. The vulnerability is the system app taking the photo without any user interaction. This is combined with the storage permission, which the malicious app can use to interact with the taken photo.

To test if your device is vulnerable just ask the Google Assistant to take a selfie. You are safe if you have to press the shutter button manually. Based on my testing, other than Samsung and Google, MIUI's camera is vulnerable and ASUS's Snapdragon Camera is safe.

Edit: This test might not be that accurate because Google Assistant could somehow be trusted to do this. Read this comment on arstechnica. Also added links to the Android features.

Edit 2: I found MIUI's camera activity is com.android.camera/.Camera, but couldn't figure out the rest of the command to actually take the photo. ;-;. Not deleting the post because I still think my explanation is simpler than the articles'.

Edit 3: Finally a good article
