Disney+ on Philips 49PUS6401 does support 5.1 surround over optical

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 03:22 AM PDT

I have a Philips 49PUS6401 Android TV hooked up via optical to an (ancient) Philips AV Receiver FR965. Also have BT TV and Blu-Ray players connected and it supports 5.1 in Dolby Digital and DTS perfectly.

Thought I'd try Disney+ running on the TV and was disappointed to find that I could only get downmixed PCM stereo. Checked online and found various reports on Reddit that the inbuilt app didn't support surround over optical, and I'd need an HDMI amplifier to access the surround channels so assumed it was a no-go.

This morning had a brainwave - how about casting Disney+ from my Android phone to the built-in Chromecast on the TV. Amazing Dolby 5.1 worked over optical!

Not sure that I was getting 4K, so I thought, how about running the built in Android TV app again - now Dolby 5.1 was still working in 4K with HDR.

    Now a happy bunny!

For some reason my sharp android TV has a lousy content player for playing videos from USB drive, it does not recognize all the subtitles.. Can usb video player be downloaded as an app? Which is the best app for that purpose? THanks!

    Live Transcribe?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:20 AM PDT

    Hello all!

I'm curious if anyone knows of a way to have the "Live Transcribe" feature on Android TV like on my Pixel 5. I have a hard time hearing and it would be nice if I could utilize that feature while I watch Twitch streams.

    Thank you!

    I hate it

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:46 AM PDT

So I have a Sony Bravia (kd-65ag8) with Android Tv 9 (kernel 4.9.225) and I hate it. It is so slow. Even changing volume lags. The system just struggle to give me useless recommendations on a cheesy home page. Had to limit the system to one process. Amazon prime video just restart itself when I shut it down so I have to reboot the tv every fucking time. What am I missing ???

MASTERCLASS for Android TV: how can I get an older version?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 03:13 PM PDT

    I can't find one.
I just foolishly updated without backing up and I dislike the new version:
    1. You have to go to a whole new page just to see other available classes
    2. It has an annoying splash screen - I don't need my time taken up with a promotion for a product I've already bought. It takes motivation to do the classes and that is the opposite.
If anyone could point me to a way I could get the version with the black logo, all the classes on the one page and no splash screen, I would be very grateful. (I think I got it soon after Dec 2020)

What does the perfect android box mean to you?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 01:24 PM PDT

Let's face it, there's alot to choose from.

Every review site has their own take on things, the pros and cons.

I'm interested in what you guys have to say. I don't work for or manufacture any device, but I am doing some research.

You have the premium devices that just cost that little bit too much, you have the other end of the spectrum with the iffy OS.

Does the perfect android device allready exist? Are you excited for anything new? Gamer and need that mean gpu for emulation? Vulcan support? Or just a watcher, needing that Widevine l1 for that juicy 4k stream on Netflix?

    Let's see what people think.

Sometimes the google assistant starts automatically by words spoken in a tv series. What can I do to avoid this?
