Motorola Moto G100 + photo and video samples

    MOTOROLA MOTO G100 Review

There are plenty of professional reviews out there, this is my amateur review after little under 2 months of use. I hope this helps someone decide one way or another about this phone or Motorola phones in general.

    PROS

    • Fantastic design. The iridescent ocean color is just fantastic and the way it looks from different angles under light is fantastic. Almost pains me to put a case on it, but I want to protect my phone from drops and whatnot.

    • Very, very good battery life. I've gotten 8-9 hours SOT and that includes 4-5 hours on Reddit (lots of pictures and gifs loading), 1-2 hours of Chrome browsing, 2-3 hours of music via VLC (sometimes YT Music) and also YouTube/Twitch for anywhere between 1-3 hours. Stand-by can be anywhere between 24-40 hours depending on how much I use the phone during that time.

    • SD870 is plenty enough for me. Since most of what I do is just simple browsing, some photos, some video and sometimes some light gaming (nothing heavy like Genshin), it hasn't caused any issues for me. I don't need more power than what this SOC has to offer.

    • Camera is solid in daylight, takes good pictures and the ultrawide is actually solid, including for some macroshots (that I do not take very often). 4K video is really good in my opinion.

    • Selfies are decent, although in apps like Snapchat it crops in quite close which can be annoying.

    • Has a headphone jack. Such a nice thing to have, underrated.

    • Has an SD card slot, which I'm currently using. Nice feature to have, I can retain some old photos without taking up internal storage.

    • Only cost me 400€ and gets me everything I wanted, including an LCD screen, clean android, headphone jack, good cameras.

    • Only has moto apps for stuff like moto gestures and some stuff like media center. Most of the apps are Google apps, including Google phone which is very well designed and the fact that automatically displays who's calling from outside of my contacts is great.

    • Fingerprint scanner is solid, I was worried honestly because the ones on Sony phones have sucked for me in the past. Used to have a Xperia XZ for two years and an Xperia 1 II for two weeks (returned due to faulty antenna) and they both had a terrible sidemounted scanner. This one does not.

    NEUTRAL

    • LCD display at 90Hz might be a turn-off for some people, I personally prefer it. No danger of burn-in and since I keep my display at 60Hz for extra battery life, I could care less about whether it can do 120Hz or not. But lots of people want AMOLED/OLED, so I can't list it as a pro but I also cannot say that its a con.

    • Ready For is cool in theory, I just haven't had time to test it, nor do I really need to. But it does seem like a solid idea. But I just simply have my dual monitor PC for any heavy stuff, so I don't need my phone to be a desktop.

    • Charging at 20W with a 5000mAh is not exactly fast by any means, but I also want that battery to last longer so I can keep the phone for longer. But there's no denying that 20W is slow, especially if you're someone like who's used to Xiaomi or OnePlus. I am not one of those people however, but I feel like that's important to mention. I don't mind the slower charging, but I get that it may be an inconvenience for some.

    CONS

    • No dual speakers. My previous phone (Zenfone 5Z) had a pretty weak earpiece as a secondary speaker for media and now that my phone only has one down firing speaker, I really notice it every time that I watch videos without headphones just how much of a difference that little earpiece speaker made on my Zenfone 5Z for video watching. Like good God, I did not realize how much I took it for granted.

    • 1080p video looks like shit (see samples). I cannot stress enough how bad the 1080p video looks like, its unacceptable. 4K does look better, but even that has some weird texturing sometimes (which can be seen in the sample videos) but its far better than the 1080p video. 4K downscaled to 1080p against the stock 1080p video is still night and day, I cannot stress enough just how shit the 1080p video looks like.

    • I don't mind the dual punch-hole design but I do wish it was just one camera on the front. Just one wideangle and then just crop with software. I don't mind it, my previous phone had a proper notch going on, but it would look cleaner with a single punch hole.

    • Display shifts more towards blue than yellow and there is no white balance setting included, which is annoying. You can toggle night light to be on always and make the display colors a bit warmer that way if you really want to, but I just think that excluding such a feature was a dumb move.

    • Considering the fact that the phone is mostly stock, its kinda baffling that updates take about 1.5-2 months it seems like. Currently on July security patch in September, but it is what it is. I wanted a phone that had a headphone jack and an LCD display and this was one of the few phones that hit that in the midrange to flagship range.

    • I wish the screenshot shortcut was something else than a three finger gesture. On my Zenfone, it was holding down the app switch key. Putting down three fingers to take a screenshot without clicking anything can be a pain in the ass. Yes it does have scrolling screenshots, I just wish the gesture was something different.

    • Why is there a dedicated Google assistant button? I have not run into anything in the settings that would allow me to remap the button for something else, but then again its on the left side of the phone and very hard to press when you're right handed. I suppose its a good thing that its on the left side so I don't accidentally press it often. But since its high up on the left side and voice control (OK, Google) and holding down the home button (3 button navigation) is way more convenient, why would you ever use a dedicated key for it? Just a waste of effort on that one, completely whiffed. One of the reason I just can't be arsed to even figure out how to remap it with maybe something like Tasker is just, again, the bad placement of it. Even if it was mapped to something like camera, I doubt I'd use it because of the placement.

    • Its kind of annoying that Android (I assume this is an Android thing and not just Motorola specific, do tell me so I can potentially edit this, I don't want to be wrong) cuts off the amount of stuff shown on the Status bar after time, battery (with percentage), signal (with VoLTE symbol) and just shows a dot signaling that there's more stuff there, despite the fact that the punch holes are on the left side and there's plenty of room to show more icons in the status bar.

    OTHER STUFF

    • Good call quality, I have not heard anyone complaining that they can't hear me and I have not had any issues hearing others.
    • Signal strength is good as well, have only had issues in some elevators but that's normal. LTE Speeds have been fantastic and I've never noticed issues.
    • The size of the phone is fantastic. I was initially concerned but once I got it in my hand, it was clear that even though its a tall phone, its narrow enough that I can comfortably one hand it. 21:9 aspect ratio is fantastic for movies (since lots of 'em have that narrow aspect ratio) but is absolutely brutal for YouTube videos in fullscreen since most of them are 16:9, meaning some thick black bars on both sides. Terrific for scrolling content since its such a tall display. Wouldn't want a smaller phone anymore, at least not significantly smaller. Also love the 5000mAh battery, wouldn't want to downgrade too much from that for my next phone. Just having that security is so convenient.

    1080p video test walking

    1080p video test standing still

    4K video test walking

    4K video test standing still

4K video test, LOUD traffic behind me

    4K video test, quiet environment

Imgur album with photo samples. Why are there no lowlight samples? Because I don't really take photos in lowlight, I only included photos that I took while using the phone normally. Most of the photos were taken just how the phone takes them, no tap to focus, point and shoot. On some photos, like the soda cans, I did tap to focus to see the bokeh effect.

    Is this a hint?

There were rumors about a release on September 13th.

Watching the Pixel 6 ad (https://youtu.be/xMZaObIQps8?t=24) at :24 the Pixel 6 is shown with the date Monday 13 and a message "Things take shape" by Amorphous.

Is this a hint that something will happen on Monday?
