BUG: Android automatically renames OGG files to OGA when moved.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 03:25 PM PDT

    This is the weirdest bug!

(I tested this with the LG V60). It seems that when using Google Files or the stock Files browser, moving OGG files will cause their extension to be automatically renamed to .OGA (for example, "chime.ogg" becomes "chime.ogg.oga"). I believe it might also do this on creation as well because I'm pretty sure when I extracted some OGG files from a zip archive, they became OGA before I moved them.

Why is this an issue? Well the at the OS level, OGA files will not automatically populate the notification/alarm/ringtone sound list. It's always been that you drop any custom sounds you want to use into these 3 root folders and they will populate the system list of sounds you can use, instead of having to manually dig them out with a sound picker. However, since OGA isn't recognized, and several apps seem to automatically rename them, it can make them extremely tedious to work with. Legacy stock sounds are always in the OGG format so you are constantly having them renamed!

I've only found one other person with this bug, in 2019: [kdeconnect] [Bug 410879] New: OGG files are renamed to OGA (mail-archive.com)

My solution was to move to a third party extractor (ZArchiver) and file manager (File Manager+). They both preserved the original extension when extracting and moving OGG. It seems what Google is doing in regards to basic file commands (move/create/etc) isn't so "basic" after all, if they are reading and renaming files at the mime level.

    Quick setting layout

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:19 PM PDT

Hey ! I had just noticed that somehow my quick settings menu (the one that appears by swiping down twice) has become a 2 x 4 grid instead of 3 × 4 (so 2 rows instead of 3). I have no idea how it changed and I don't know how to change it back...

Stock Samsung messaging app duplicating chats and restoring long-deleted messages after system update

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:11 AM PDT

New update came for my Galaxy A6(2018), RCS messages through Google, some more improvements... what I noticed however was that at least one of the text chats got duplicated or rather split into two unrelated threads (like I write in one and receive answer in another) and some previously deleted messages (mostly ads and subscription info, some from more than a year ago) got "resurrected". Android 10, stock Samsung app, RCS chats disabled, no duplicate contacts. The only other thing that could somewhat influence all this is SimpleTools contacts app (which found long deleted contact groups btw) but it is just a contacts app and not sms/mms app.

What can cause it and what to do?

P.S. Googled this question in many forms and it is either: a thread from 10 years ago, carrier-specific forum (like ATT), abandoned threads with 2-4 messages, non-Samsung issue, "here's 10 ways how to archive messages" articles or Google forum with nonexistent answers...

Is authentication supposed to be this difficult?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:07 PM PDT

After a very long process of design polishing I've identified some points that need to be acknowledged when managing user login, and I'm just wondering if this is really the correct path.

I think one of the main reasons for the overcomplexity in my case is that, the user is left with the alternate option of linger a little bit longer through the app after user registration, instead of immediately login in, as I really detest that behavior.

This creates 2 additional states to the entire process, what I call "set" and "not_set".

My design makes use of MediatorLiveDatas, which in return work hand in hand with logic gates between them (custom MediatorLiveDatas), this is done to prevent double calls (in some cases to NavController) and also prevent double fetching data.

This filtering and forking of the data, has turned (into what I guess) are too many data nodes of user states, that even when trying to review their independent utility step by step, every one of them seems useful.

First comes the "signed" and "unsigned", defined by whether the auth is null or not.

But before that, comes a user preference check, to know if an account has already been subscribed in the device.

This adds an "initializing" period, which then turns into a "set" or "not_set", as mentioned before, this two steps become a reality ONLY on the condition of the auth being null (unsigned).

The first problem here is the userName.
As the username is not strictly bounded by any step and can change in between a session it is asynchronous to any state change (even a sign-in which I'll explain next), so it forces a node forking to prevent double calls, I'm also encrypting the userName and re-feeding the "main user data node" with its encryption, this creates a double call on sign-in.

This encryption is performed so that basic user info can be displayed on the login screen after a "log-out -> turn off -> turn on" process of the device.

    So I have:
    * 1 node for sing-in, sing out.
    * 1 node for set, not_set.
    * 1 node for initializing, not_set, set, singed, un_signed (plus encrypted userName, uid, etc...) (this is the "main user data node")

a 4th node that disregards changes to userName but retain information about "not_set", "sign" and "unsigned" (controller that changes between login, registration and main user info screens (not account, not yet...))

    Now... the account...

a 5th node that merges basic auth info with parameters of the different accounts a user may have (account db path, or whether the account is published on-line or is it just locally on the device).

What I am yet to create, which I see the need to, is a 6th node that would serve for downloading purposes.

One that would cache its "signed-in" state (with uid) and disregard any "unsigned" or below states: To let pass only if (incoming.isAtLeast(signed) && !incoming.uid.Equal(this.uid)) in order to prevent re-downloading any information required between user login AND account login, on the event that user logs out from device and then logs in again to device without a turn off (just a cache).

What I have the feeling is that, once everything is in absolute order, I should only expose the node that will serve best among all these nodes, and that node will work for the rest of the project.

Basically, all this is just for the app initialization.

Is it supposed to be this complex ??

Hello everyone, today I just realized that my whatsapp media (video and images) from the first file to the last photos of 3 days ago just disappeared, nothing in media, nothing in file manager, just nothing, nothing even in google photos.

I cannot believe how this has happened.

P.S. I just have the medias I shared from 2-3 days ago, the other ones just vanished.

Anyone knows what I should do?

    Thanks!

    ADB Not Detecting Device

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 12:23 PM PDT

Seriously, does anyone know how to make ADB recognize a device?

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/22450478/android-device-not-recognized-by-adb

Every step there doesn't work. Even the solution about going into PTP mode doesn't work.

It's a OnePlus 8T that refuses to be found by ADB. I spent 2 hours installing a bunch of packages to the SDK manager in case that did anything, but nothing has helped.

Is there any kind of master list of troubleshooting to get ADB to actually detect a device?

Developer mode is on; it does permit debugging. The USB cable works fine; I copied 30 GB of media over to the phone.

Find my apps in the new play store app

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:44 AM PDT

    Hey,

I got a new phone and somehow I can't find the list of my previous installed apps anymore.

In the old play store there was a list of "I had these apps installed at an earlier time". Easy to find. But with the redesign I can't seem to find it anymore.

I hope you understand what I mean, if you need more information please say so 😊

Is it possible for an Android device to output two separate Bluetooth outputs for seperates devices?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 10:50 AM PDT

It's just as it sounds like, but I'd like to clarify here.

If you had two Bluetooth devices connected to your phone, let's say a pair of earbuds and a speaker, but you wanted to play music to the speaker and an audio book to the earbuds. Would anyone happen to know of this is possible? I know it's possible to send the same single to both of the same devices.

Why do photos disappear from my android phone?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 10:04 AM PDT

Photos are disappearing from my Nokia 5.3 running Android 10.

Every time I take photos in quick succession, most of them seem to get auto-deleted immediately after. I open the Photos app and I will see all the photos I took, but they will disappear before my eyes. Sometimes their thumbnails will be grayed out right before they vanish. It will always spare one or two of them, seemingly at random (of course they're often the photos that came out the worst).

    • This happens whether I'm saving to internal storage or the SD card.

    • This doesn't happen when I take burst shots.

    • They can't be restored and don't appear in the trash. They're just gone.

    • The photo files aren't under DCIM > Camera.

I initially assumed it was some kind of space-saving feature that automatically got rid of photos that were similar, but I can find no setting for this either in the phone's general settings, the camera app's settings, or in Photos' settings.

I've had this problem since I got the phone close to a year ago. It makes it next to impossible to photograph things in a series such as Ebay auctions or pets that move around a lot (the two things I use it for the most). Taking burst shots is sometimes a workaround, but there are still circumstances when I need to take separate, individual shots one after the other.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this or what's causing this?

Phone reverts to 12 hour clock on reboot.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 01:47 PM PDT

I have an LG Velvet 5G running Android 11 on Freedom Mobile (Canada.) Everytime I turn on my phone I have to change the clock from 12 hour to 24 hour format and it is starting to get very frustrating. Is anybody else having this problem? Does anyone know how to fix this?

UPDATE: When I boot my phone it shows the clock in 24hr format until the minute changes (I.e. displays 17:36 after it turns on but switches to 5:37 on the minute.) ALSO. No matter how many times I turn on the 24 hour clock in settings everytime I turn on the phone and check it is off again.

Switching to IOS, but would like to keep my android for cybersecurity tasks. Do I leave samsung OS and root, or do I install a custom ROM?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 01:22 PM PDT

I am getting an iPhone for a few reasons,

    1. I am a teenager, so Snapchat having good camera quality is a dealbreaker, as well as facetime and iMessage support.
    2. In my experience, androids slow down over time a lot faster than IOS devices, and I cannot afford to frequently upgrade.

I will miss sideloading apps and using a terminal emulator to diagnose my network issues, but my solution is to keep my s9 as well.

The question is: Do I root and use Kali Nethunter to install my Linux related needs? Or do I install a custom ROM to really control everything and get a bare-metal android experience?

What are the downsides to installing a custom ROM? Do all custom ROMs support the google play store? Can I go back to Samsung's android if I so desire? The goal is to have a Linux like experience, like a more powerful raspberry pi in my pocket. What are some good cybersecurity ROMs?

And regarding rooting: Is there any chance of bricking my phone? And does anyone know of the best resource on how to root a Samsung s9?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make a calculated decision.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue where you cant @ people easily on instagram group chats. You have to type out the whole name instead of being able to select from the pop-up list. This has been bugging me for years, just randomly decided to see check if I'm the only one with this issue or if others have it too.

Is there a Youtube app optimized for directional pad?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:24 AM PDT

I have a remote that I use with my computer (running Android x86). The remote has an air mouse, but it is quite imprecise, and I'd rather have a Youtube app that uses the D-Pad. I remember having one such app on my Xbox 360, and I think you can also get a similar app on Android TV. How can I get it on this computer?

Is there a quick way to change how long the screen stays on?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:16 AM PDT

When I go shopping I turn the screen timer to 10 minutes so my phone doesn't turn off every 30 seconds and I can't see my list. I have to go into settings and display and all that, and a lot of times I forget to go back and change it when I am done shopping.

I'm looking for a quick way to change the setting. Like, a button I can put on the home screen. I'd even be fine with a button that makes the screen not turn off for a time, or until I press the button again. Ay way to get this shortcut on my home screen?

edit: I should mention I have a Galaxy Note 10+

Is it possible to force a passcode or Fingerprint to access certain mobile sites?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:07 AM PDT

I purposely avoid having a banking app on my phone, just in case it's stolen.

However, there are rare times when I must access the mobile site to transfer funds, if I need to make a purchase.

So, using the mobile site, and the Google Password Manager, I access my account. However, since this only requires I open Chrome and navigate to my bank's mobile site, this is a significant lack of security.

I know anyone who snatched my phone out of my hands could do the same (without knowing my password at all), so long as my phone is unlocked.

I have a fingerprint sensor (Pixel 4A) and a passcode to unlock the phone, but am wondering if there is another layer of security I could add.

Is it possible to force a passcode or fingerprint to open certain mobile sites? Or open Chrome at all? Or require a passcode or fingerprint to access Google Password Manager from mobile?

Lenovo Tab M8 worth in 2021?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 09:13 AM PDT

I'm planing on buying a Tablet (95$) for basic google and some gaming. I want to play relatively big games, so I don't know whether the 2gb ram would be a big brick in my way or not.

And also it uses android 9. Is this a big downside? Any reasons why I should look out for a Android 10 tablet instead?

Anyone some ideas whether a Tab M8 is worth in 2021?
