Is there a way to prevent a single app from updating - Android TV Home v2.0.10 - but leave auto-update on?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 01:09 AM PST

On my Mi Box (MDZ-16-AB) I noticed that the launcher (Android TV Home) version 2.1.3-320113730 and higher has the annoying banner ads, but version 2.0.10-307630529 and lower do not. I would like to be able to load v2.0.10-307630529 and disable auto updates for only that app, but from what I can see the Play Store for AndroidTV doesn't have that ability like stock Android does. I only see a global auto-update enable/disable.

    I've tried:

    • Rolling back to the earlier version baked into the rom, then disabling it and sideloading 2.0.10 but the Play Store still recognizes the app and fetches updates.
    • I uninstalled the app for my user (adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.tvlauncher) then tried sideloading a modded apk signed with my own keystore, but the install is blocked:
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE: Package com.google.android.tvlauncher signatures do not match previously installed version; ignoring!]
    • I tried using App Cloner (https://appcloner.app/) This almost seemed to work, but as soon as the homescreen loads it blinks and restarts on an endless loop. It also has an annoying watermark/logo indicating that it is a cloned app. I haven't tried the paid version of the app, and given that the purchase is pricey and nonrefundable it's not worth the experiment.
    • I also tried manually editing AndroidManifest.xml with a hex editor to change to a different app name (com.google.android.tvlauncher --> com.google.android.tvlaunchxx). My modded APK would install but not run. If there is a proper way to edit an already compiled manifest, please pass it on. It's not a text file despite the name.

I know it is possible to disable auto-updates and manually update every other app, that's not what I want. I want to be able to give the system to another family member who is less tech-friendly and have the unit update normally without mucking up the homescreen.

I'm also open to any alternative launchers, I haven't explored that as much as I should have but it didn't look too promising.

Dynalink Android TV Box USB Storage - Working !

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 03:06 PM PST

    Hey guys,

After much hair pulling, I have finally managed to get USB Storage working on the $30 Dynalink Android TV Box.

For the people that don't know, the specs are:

    SoC | Amlogic S905Y2

    CPU | Quad-core 1.8 GHz (ARM Cortex-A53)

    GPU | ARM Mali-G31 MP2

    RAM | 2GB

    Storage | 8GB

Its basically this box rebadged by dynalink. Pretty impressive specs for $30

    Stuff that didn't help

    • Trying 3 different styles of OTG cable / adapters
    • Trying 4 different brands of USB drives
    • Trying 2 different power adapters
    • Trying 2 different USB hubs
    • Using ADB to format the drive (would fail during the format process)

    What worked for me

    • 16gb usb drive ! (all previous drives that I tried were 32GB and higher)

Not sure if there is an issue with the device trying to format larger USB drives but 16GB worked fine for me. If any of you have this device and can't get the USB storage working then please try it with a 16Gb (or smaller) drive and see if that works.

    WPA2 enterprise compatibility

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 04:51 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm considering buying an Android TV box for my university accommodation. However, we use "eduroam" WiFi with WPA2 Enterprise. I tried a Chromecast but it wouldn't work, so I wanted to ask if Android TV would have any more luck?

    Thank you so much!

Google TV bluetooth speakers + tV speakers?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 03:50 PM PST

When pairing bluetooth headphones/speakers to a Google TV, will it continue to send sound to the TV speakers? My father's hearing isn't the best and he needs to use headphones to hear the TV. However, other people in the room still want to listen to the TV.

If I pair headphones with his Google TV, will it continue to play audio through the TV speakers as well?

Chrome browser not detecting Chromecast with Google TV

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 11:52 AM PST

Hello. The Chrome browser on my laptop does not detect my Chromecast with Google TV for casting. They are both on the same Wifi network. But the Youtube and the Netflix app on my phone detects and casts fine. Also, the browser detects the Roku on my TV though. Any thoughts?

Apple TV Aerial Screensavers On Chromecast w/ Android TV?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 11:50 AM PST

I've only ever had a Chromecast Ultra which doesn't let you use video while it's in ambient mode, but thinking of getting the Chromecast with Google TV. All I have found is ways to do it on Android TV from sources prior to Chromecast with Google TV but not sure if they're still relevant.

Does anyone know if it's pretty much done the same way as in the past or is there anything different about Chromecast with Google TV that wouldn't allow this, such as not being able to use videos as a screensaver like the older Chromecasts?

Mi Box 4k Wont stay awake

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 09:13 AM PST

After installing the latest update to the Xiaomi Mi box 4k, my Mi box is unable to stay awake. I already had Wakelock running before the update and it worked perfectly. After the update it seemed like Wakelock was removed and I had to reinstall it.

But now my Mi Box is unable to get out of hibernation by remote and to get it working I have to replug the power cord to force a reboot.

    Does anyone have the solution?

    Looking for a Box

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 01:01 PM PST

Hey all. Just looking for advice for an AndroidTV box. I used to have a Nexus, but that failed a few months ago. I was using a firestick, but that's starting to go and I miss using my USB stick to watch movie files. I was looking at the MI S and Ematic. Here's my dilemma, though. I started watching Prime Video and supposedly neither are able to run Prime. Any good boxes that are able to run Prime Video as well as Disney+?

Edit: I should add that I'm also looking for something that's able to handle a multiple USB port dongle. Also, not looking to spend that much on a Shield.

Problem Getting My CCwGTV Six Month Netflix Credit, Had to PAY to Get it to Work!

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 10:22 AM PST

Did anybody else have a problem getting Netflix to honor the six month credit from Google?

Netflix may be trying to squeeze customers for extra months of service beyond their promotions by falsely claiming there is a problem with the customer's back-up payment method. When redeeming the six month credit, NF demands customers give them a back-up payment method even though no money is due when they sign-up. No problem with that, as it is standard with all promotional sign-ups from other companies. But I ENDED UP HAVING TO PAY UPFRONT just to get them to accept my card and use the credit that came with the CCwGTV bundle.

I bought a package deal from Google for a ChromeCast with GoogleTV bundled with 6 months of Netflix for $90+tax. When I tried to sign up for Netflix using the included NF credit, the NF website told me there was "a problem with my payment method". I called my credit card company, Citi Card, and they said NF NEVER TRIED THE CARD. To be sure this was correct, I asked to talk to a Citi supervisor. The supe guaranteed me NF had not tried the card, else there would be a record of it on my account. He also assured me my account was in good standing. Also, they had heard this same thing happening to other customers. They said the problem was NF.

Called NF, they suggested I buy a gift card (minimum $25) and use that to sign up with. Didn't want to do that as I was owed the $84 CCwGTV credit and likely won't keep NF after the six months. Tried five different cards from two different CC companies and got the same message, "a problem with my payment method".

Now get this: when I signed up for a NF account w/o trying to use the google promotional credit, my payment method miraculously was now fine and dandy -- the same card that wasn't good as back-up payment when trying to use it to redeem the promotion! Only then could I get my six month credit.

I checked on-line and many other people reported the same thing when NF used to have the free 30 day trial, "a problem with [the] payment method"
Are they doing this to ensure they are going to get some cash out of people who sign-up using a promotion? It wasn't like I was getting six months of NF for free, as the Google bundle cost way more than buying the Google ChromeCast by itself. If I had had to buy the NF gift card to sign-up, they would get an extra $25 besides what ever Google pays NF, or they would get the cost of the extra month I had to pay to get them to let me sign-up and apply the Google promotion credit.

New AndroidTV box from ISP and no Netflix!!!

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 01:29 PM PST

I work for the local ISP in my area and they have received new AndroidTV boxes. So I got 3 of them for my house. Hooked one up and went to bed. My family and I wanted to watch NETFLIX!! NO FING NETFLIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's NOWHERE. Not in the app store either. I tried to download the APK and send it to my device. It loads and says NOT compatible with my device. I installed the NON-AndroidTV version and it worked but can't see where you are clicking.

The device is a KAON. No info online about the device.

How can I get Netflix on this box or am I FUBARed!
