Is NVidia Shield 2019 worth it for 1080p?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 04:22 AM PST

Hey guys, i own a Xiaomi Mi Box 3, 1080p Projector, Denon receiver and 5.1 speaker system.

All connected over Wifi (5Hz) to NAS where i keep all my movies. Main usage (Movies, Netflix, Youtube, maybe some 2 player gaming)

Mi Box 3 rocks for the money, but has its moments.. I'm thinking of upgrading to NVidia Shield TV (or PRO).. do you think its worth it on 1080p Projector? Will it give me better image quality? I know i will give me better more stable experience, but I don't know should i go for it, or wait to upgrade later with a 4k projector.

Google TV install on Sharp 70" Aquos Android TV

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 06:58 AM PST

If anyone got the Sharp 70" tv from the Best Buy deal around Black Friday (model 4T-C70BK2UD), I wanted to share some tips for installing the Google TV overlay until our tv is (hopefully) officially transitioned.

    First, I followed these directions:
    https://www.howtogeek.com/693761/how-to-get-the-google-tv-ui-on-android-tv-devices-right-now/

During install I found the following items of note:

    • Trying to install install the Google Base apk showed that it was apparently already installed (it asked if I wanted to update. I selected yes. It failed installing it).
    • The directions tell you to turn on Network Debugging. This tv doesn't have that option. But, I found that turning on USB debugging was enough. After turning that on ADB shell was able to access.
    • After I was done with the installation, I hit the home button and was given an option to select Home or RC Update. Not knowing what RC Update was, I selected Home and that has worked.
    • Note: I used the Disable command instead of the Uninstall command. I assume that the uninstall would work just as well, but the disable seemed better as it would let me switch back if I didn't like Google TV or if it didn't work without losing my settings.

This tv is new to me, and with it Android TV was new to me. Google TV is also new to me. I can see pros and cons to both. I think I will stick with Google TV for now if for no other reason than to find some new shows/movies that I didn't realize I had access to.

Anyone who tried Cyberpunk 2077 on Google TV? How does it perform on your device?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:25 PM PST

So I recently got the Google TV and downloaded the APK file of Stadia. However I notice whenever I play the game it's very blurry and pixelated. It however does run in 4k, but doesn't support hdr on this app.

So I'm really curious how you guys experience the game on Google TV?

Is it possible to roll back android TV updates?

Because now I can't hold down volume up or down anymore, it only registers a single press. The settings menu got more convoluted, with random black screens and the back button closing the settings instead of backing out one section. Bravia auto sync no longer functions, because that setting seems to have disappeared with this update. And my Crunchyroll app just crashes now instead of opening.

I know this might be considered a "pointless rant" and get taken down. But honestly, if an update bricks this many things why push it in the first place? And someone please tell me how to roll back android TV.

Does anybody use mysql for a Kodi library? AndroidTV channel not showing artwork

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:01 PM PST

I had a local library and recently migrated to MySQL because I'm planning on getting another shield. The artwork on the shield launcher home screen now shows blank for all shows but one. Anybody know how to fix this issue?

Android box with dts-ma and Dolby true HD passtrough support

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 08:04 AM PST

As in the title I'm looking for a device with dts-ma and Dolby true HD passtrough capabilities. I recently took a firestick and was disappointed it couldn't handle theese audio formats, so I'm looking for an alternative. Possibly sub 100€, if I have to spend more I'll still keep my wdtv for a few years, since it handles dts and Dolby passtrough flawlessly. Thanks a lot for any help :).

Accidentally Installed OTA Without Thinking, Now Have Staff Picks. Is it possible to Sideload the Firmware to downgrade?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:03 PM PST

I have the Mi Box MDZ-22-AB. I accidentally installed the october security updates without thinking about the fact that it would likely upgrade the launcher as well. Is it possible to roll back the upgrade to an earlier version of android 9 images?

Philips 4K TV with sound but no picture

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:59 PM PST

I can see the home and use apps like Netflix just fine, but when I try to watch live TV I get sound but no picture. I can see the overlays and TV setting while on the live screen. I just can't actually see the shows or guides. It's not a problem with the box. We tried it with another TV, and it worked fine. We've tried unplugging and rebooting with no luck. What do I do now?

Chromecast with Google TV random black screen issues...

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 02:46 PM PST

I recently just purchased the new Chromecast with Google TV. When watching movies like on Netflix or HBO Max every 15 minutes or so the screen will go black for a couple seconds. And also I noticed on my pixel 5 when watching a movie from the Google TV app I have the same issue. I'm starting to think it's the Google TV app that's causing this.

How do I delete USB files?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 03:30 PM PST

After watching them I want to delete them!

VLC isn't doing a good job at seperating viewed content like it does on a mobile device so it gets confusing which episode I was on.

    Options for pausing OTA feed

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 03:21 PM PST

    Hi all,

I tried searching and didn't find anything, but would appreciate confirmation or advice here:

We just replaced an older TCL w/ Roku with a new Sony X950H w/ Android TV. Longtime Android phone user, excited to have it on the TV, blah blah blah. The old TCL had a really slick feature when you put in a usb drive, it would automatically enable live OTA pause/record functionality for up to 90 minutes. We found it incredibly useful as a free DVR-lite solution, skipping commercials, watching shows if we were cooking, etc. I ignorantly assumed this was just a nice feature that modern smart TVs had.

Fast forward to now, when my wife is asking why our giant shiny expensive new TV can't pause. Is there any way to replicate this functionality without a new subscription, dongle, tuner, or something else? It seems ridiculous that a 2016 $300 TV has a core useful SW feature that a 2020 $1500 TV does not, so I'm hoping we can fix this through an app or some other workaround.

    Thanks in advance!

picture in picture mode on chromecast w/ google tv?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:25 PM PST

is there a way to make this work? it works on my tivo stream 4k (android 9) but not my CCGTV (android 10). the PIP settings page is hidden in the menu, but you can get to it via adb...seems it's enabled for all of the apps i want it to be enabled for, but it just doesn't work.

is there a way to somehow make this work via adb commands, or is it broken in the latest CCGTV software?

My 4k TV lags and stutters at 60fps

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:15 AM PST

whenever i play a video from YouTube that's 4k, 1440p, 1080p as long as it's 60fps it always seems to lag. The audio is fine but the video itself is stuck on a single frame. it's working fine when it's 4k 30fps. how can i fix this

edit: i just tested a 1080p 60fps video on it with my ps4 and it's working normally. i think the problem is the TV's youtube app itself. i guess we'll need a ps5 or something to enjoy 4k

Formuler GTV little review: Auto frame rate, double tap the home button, Google Cast always available and more.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:02 AM PST

Formuler GTV little review: Auto frame rate, double tap the home button, Google Cast always available and more.

Formuler.tv provided me with a sample device for testing, so these are my first impressions with it, I guess it will improve over time.

One important thing to note is that after the device is setup, a pending firmware update must be applied but it will erased everything up so it needs to be setup again, I've been told the original firmware was a beta version so the one that was applied afterwards is the official one and it's actually very stable. Also, Prime Video comes as a system app.

I couldn't test its gigabit ethernet connection but I assume it's good enough.

    PROS:

    - The device boots fast, the interface is snappy and apps load fast thanks to the AMLogic S905X2.

    - AUTO FRAME RATE SUPPORT: I was impressed to know that it supports this feature, I tested this with Emby and it works perfectly.

    - GOOGLE CAST IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE WHEN THE DEVICE IS IN STANDBY MODE: The WiFi keeps the device connected to the modem/router all the time, which leads to allow the Google Cast function to operate even when the device is in standby mode, invoking the command "turn ON the TV" using the Google Assistant on my phone also works but first the device must be added to the Google Home app.

    - DOUBLE TAP THE HOME BUTTON: The device has the ability to display the background apps by double tapping the "home" button on the remote control, apps can be closed by pressing the left or right buttons or a "Red" button placed under the numerical buttons to clear them all at once but it didn't do that, it's still kind of buggy:

    https://preview.redd.it/5ofk99k6vd561.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=09be273099a16ae7a9b1979998174d2de13a52de

    - MOUSE TOGGLE: The remote control can be setup to operate as a wireless mouse with the press of a button:

    https://preview.redd.it/expnworcvd561.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc91ebfd12dd858a44fbd88a30a30b21f6ba81df

    - I connected my USB 3.0 NTFS hard disc into the USB 3.0 port and it didn't have any problem reading it.

    CONS:

    - The MyTvOnline2 app is placed as the first fixed app in the list of apps of the Android TV home screen, it can't be removed or moved, I really don't like it that way:

    https://preview.redd.it/fp6w6jnlvd561.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=6914f8edff0d87f61978e271196aa35e7b8870a7

    - The universal remote control feature doesn't allow me to control the TV and the device at the same time to turn them ON/OFF or change the volume of the TV without HDMI-CEC, it just controls one at a time.

    - Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio passtrough are NOT supported, Google also removed multichannel PCM support on Android 9 globally for some reason and this device is not the exception, the only Android TV device supporting all of this is the Nvidia Shield.

    WHAT IS STILL MISSING:

    - the Netflix certification.

Thanks to u/triplebeamz and u/FormulerIPTV for such a great device.

Would you be interested in buying this device after reading this review?
