Android Questions: Folders getting deleted on their own

Folders getting deleted on their own

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 08:01 AM PST

Hey all, looking for a little help. Recently, I had to flash my Galaxy A505U (originally Verizon) to the stock Samsung firmware in order to get it working on Straight Talk. Everything went mostly without issue, and I restored the device (now a A505U1). Upon restoring it, a few apps acted a little wonky, which I chalked up to the settings getting restored from them being on another firmware, and after I cleared the cache, everything (except the device health widget, for some odd reason) worked well.

I then went to use package disabler to debloat the phone, and it wouldn't work. No big deal, as I know exactly what I had disabled. So I do the same with ADB, and bam, all is well. Everything running smoothly. Until I go to Firefox the next day and can't download anything. Frantic, I almost overreacted and wiped the phone, until I went to my folders and discovered the issue: DCIM, Download, Documents, Music, and Video had all been wiped from my file system. So I recreate the folders (luckily, there was nothing important in any of them), try another download, and Firefox is working as it should.

Today however, I happen to notice that it's happened once again, and I have no clue what's doing it. Storage manager, maybe? I thought it was maybe CCleaner wiping any empty directories, but my monofont folder was wiped, too, as well as the few pics I had in /DCIM/Camera.

Anyone have any advice? Feel free to suggest some more out of the box solutions, i.e. command line stuff, etc. I'm pretty good with tech in general, but I'm not well versed with android.

TL, DR: How do I stop my phone from wiping top level directories on its own?

EDIT: I don't know if it's relevant, but it doesn't wipe my MEGA folder (which has a subdirectory, MEGA downloads) but wipes /Music even though it contains a subdirectory. I figure if it keeps happening, I can work around it by placing everything in the Android directory and routing Downloads to /Android/Downloads, but I'd like to get to the bottom of it because I'm super frustrated.

Also, I'm sure I didn't disable anything via ADB that wasn't disabled via package manager before I changed firmwares.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T excessive battery drain

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 09:32 AM PST

My Xiaomi phone uses 68,8% battery from the screen and it's really bothering me. Why does this happen? I have 5 and a half hours of active time and usually keep the screen at half brightness. How can I fix this?

    Degredation of lithium-based batteries.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 09:53 AM PST

Just curious, if I only charge my phone overnight and therefore have no need for quick charging, what type of charger would be ideal? Is volts or amperage more responsible for the heat and degredation of lithium-based batteries?

Screenshots save under camera roll in Google photos app on my Samsung galaxy a51

The screenshots in the normal gallery app have a separate folder but in the photos app it shows under the camera roll folder (hence I've got loads of unnecessary screenshots getting backed up to cloud when I don't really need them) how to fix this?

Can I run into compatibility issues if I buy a 256GB SDXC card?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:27 AM PST

I currently have a Xiaomi Redmi 8, it supports SDXC but I'm having trouble finding card size support for it or any other phone, some of the older models specify that they only accept up to 32GB or 64GB cards but others just list SDXC which looks promising but I'd rather make sure

I'm considering pulling the trigger on a Kingston Canvas Go Plus 256GB because it's specs look decent and it's price's fair, however I'm wondering if a card of such a big size can potentially be incompatible with either my current phone or a phone that I'll eventually upgrade it to(my current SD card outlived like 3-4 phones).

I currently have a Xiaomi Redmi 8 right now, it supports SDXC but I'm having trouble finding card size support for it or any other phone, some of the older models specify that they only accept up to 32GB or 64GB cards but others just list SDXC which looks promising but I'd rather make sure.

Emulating Stock Android on Windows 10

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 12:28 PM PST

I know of options like Bluestacks/Nox etc, but is there no way to emulate a stock version of Android (with Google Play integrated services) on my PC? I dont really want it for games, but just to mess about and try stuff on Android I cant otherwise do (iOS user here).

Happy to even set a VM up for it.

Is there any way to do so?

Muting notifications after receiving so many unread notifications?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 06:22 AM PST

So im sure years ago you used to be able to get each app to mute notifications on a per app basis when you have so many notifications come through that were left unread. Is this something that can still be done? In particular I have a Facebook messanger group in which sometimes people are messaging rapidly and I just get sick of having notifications keep going all the time, and I dont want to permanently mute it, and I'm sick of always having to go in and mute it. I'd just like it if after about 3-5 unread messages that all new notifications would come through as silent. Also individually being able to set app notification volume would be useful if thats something thtlat can be done? Can anyone help? TIA

What's the deal with Android 11 bubbles?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 12:02 PM PST

But now FB messenger bubbles arent working as they used to? I only am getting a bubble for one person in my contact lists when before I would have a "stack" of convos I was engaged in.

    Am I screwed?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:44 AM PST

In today's episode of Android flashing adventures: a (seemingly) bricked Xiaomi Mi A2!

I can't use fastboot. My phone does get detected but executing any commands just gives an error or the command hangs. This is the case on both my PC and Laptop, Windows and Linux and 2 different cables. I can boot into my stock recovery (it auto boots to that), but I can't apply an update using adb sideload because adb devices doesn't return any devices.

So... am I screwed? Or is there another way to flash back stock Android without fastboot or adb?

PS. All I want to do here is flash back stock Android, nothing else.

    Notification Trouble on Google Messages

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:41 AM PST

I receive notifications for new text messages as soon as they arrive, but when I open the Messages app all of them are cleared. This is really annoying as I may have multiple received messages from different chats and want to open one chat at a later time, but it's cleared from my notifications.

Is there any way to make it so that the notification for only the chat I open is cleared?

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S10e running Android 10 and One UI 2.5. I've tried looking through the Messages app settings but there doesn't seem to be anything there aside from notification sounds, etc. I also found a forum about this on Google support forums and there weren't any solutions there.

    Any help is appreciated!

Can't receive some sms and mms in group texts when on wifi

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:22 AM PST

I'm using AT&T, and for some reason I can't download either pictures or texts when in group chat when I'm connected to wifi.

I've tried it with wifi calling on and off, enabled mobile data under mobile network settings, allowed 2g services as I've seen suggested before, mms is set to auto retrieve. I'm not sure what to do and it's infuriating.

I can send mms and sms to individuals and groups no problem, but I have hell receiving mms or sms when connected to wifi in group texts. Some come through, but a majority don't.

    I'm using an S10+

Chrome top banner "no internet connection" won't go away.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 10:40 AM PST

Pixel 3aXL, Android 11, Google Fi with Google VPN On, chrome version 86.0.4240.198, no root.

About once a week my chrome browser decides to display a banner on the top saying "no internet connection". All the pages continue to load when navigated to, my speed test reads 70mbs down and 6mbs up, the banner keeps displaying. The only way that I can get rid of it is by restarting the phone and it stays gone for a random period of time but usually no more than a week.

As far as problems go it's pretty insignificant. It seems to serve as a reminder for me to restart my phone regularly which isn't a bad thing.

I don't think it's related to the VPN because I turned it off for a week. I can't rule out the VPN though since I wasn't thorough about clearing caches, restarting, or factory resetting and leaving the VPN off.

It doesn't bother me enough to do a factory reset and I don't even think that would solve it. My guess is it's in the programing for Chrome and it will be solved in future updates. It's been going on for 2-3 months. I've never been able to find anyone with this same problem, so I've started questioning if it's just me, chime in if you have a solution or are experiencing the same problem

Can I Turn Off Digital Wellbeing Without My Parents Knowing?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 09:00 AM PST

My parents recently turned on screen time for my phone, and they set it for 20 minutes a day. Obviously as any teen would, would like to change that. There is a button to remove my account from digital wellbeing, but I'm not sure if it sends a notification to my parents saying they I left. Thanks.

    Download issues (Android)

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 08:36 AM PST

Context: entered a design contest that is being sponsored by Adobe. Adobe has offered a template that is free to download and is suppose to be compatible with most of their apps.

Problem: I click the template download link, download is completed. I go to open download however it won't open. It reads "the original file appears to be unsupported or damaged."

I have photoshop express by Adobe downloaded on my phone (Android). The website says the template is compatible with this app. However, upon entering the app and trying to open the download the same error appears. Also, the photo for the actual template (before clicking on download) contains the broken/corrupted emote and the word RAW in the bottom right.

I've searched the internet all morning but haven't found anything helpful. Also, the Adobe website doesn't have any sort of support option. So I've come to you guys for help. Please help lol. Thanks in advance.

All I am trying to do is open the download in Photoshop so that I can begin my work.

Feel free to pm me, I have pictures and weblinks.

Data Recovery App installed SuperSU & Broke Phone; "unauthorized actions have been detected..."

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 08:29 AM PST

So I accidently deleted all my SMS and was seeking a way to recover the data. I have a Galaxy s5 (SM-G900V). It is not rooted. Runs Android 6.0.1.

I tired Dr. Fone first. It did something funny on the first run saying something like 'downloading packages for your phone' then booted the phone into "odin mode" phone rebooted, then Dr. Fone found the SMS. I didn't have a license to recover and wondered if other applications might be better. It installed a Dr. Fone application on the phone.

I tried Coolmuster Android SMS + Contacts Recovery. It scanned the phone and found nothing. It indicated it needed root to find. It installed a coolmuster application on the phone.

I tried Android Data Recovery (fonepaw). It did the same as Coolmuster - finds nothing, says needs root for 'deep scan'. It installed an application on the phone as well.

I tried EaseUS MobiSaver. it took was unable to find any files. I do not recall if it installed an application on the phone.

Dr. Fone is the only one to find something, and the only one to booth the phone into odin mode.

I then decided I would try to see if I could use ADB to get the data, starting with doing a backup. I tried ADB Backup, but it wouldn't work. That's when I then went about uninstalling all the applications each recovery suite installed and found that SuperSU had been installed and was a system app that I couldn't uninstall now. It can only be disabled via application manager and when booting into safe mode it is still running. I cannot be certain which application installed it. I'm not even sure how a system application can be installed on a non-rooted phone. I suspect Dr. Fone did this when booted into 'odin mode' but Dr. Fone support denies this as possible. Coolmuster support also denies their application would do this. I have yet to get a response from Android Data Recovery or EaseUS.

I then noticed that there was a notification on my phone that I'd never seen before:
    "Security Notice

Unauthorized actions have been detected. Restart your phone to undo any unauthorized changes."

To which online all I really find is: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/102365/unauthorized-actions-have-been-detected-restart-your-phone-to-undo-any-unautho

" My device displayed the notification: "Unauthorized actions have been detected. Restart your phone to undo any unauthorized changes." What do I do?

During regular security checks of the Linux kernel, the system has detected that the kernel has been modified.
    Possible causes:

You may have installed a malicious or flawed app, which attempted to modify the kernel code or file system

You may have accidentally removed or modified a system file."

So, now I'm wondering perhaps one or more of these applications use the ADB backup pathway or something similar to try to scan/recover data. What's unclear is why SuperSU would ever be installed, or even how they installed it. My phone has been stuck in airplane mode and not used at all to prevent any data overwrite. I was rather pissed off that these applications were installed, including SuperSU, risking overwrite of the data.

I'm looking for any ideas about what happened.
    Does anyone:

-know which applications could've installed SuperSU on a non-rooted phone?
-know how to get SuperSU uninstalled?
-have an idea how to get ADB Backup command working again?
-have an idea how to fix this security notice?

    android head unit boot

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 11:09 PM PST

My android head unit closes all the open apps when I turn off the ignition ( even for one second). Whether I'm using the navigation or watching YouTube, if I shut off the car and back on, all the opened apps close and I have to redo everything all over again. I've heard about some apps captures the status of the unit right before closing, and once you start the car again, everything is back to the previous status, is that real ? Also some head units have an option in the developer options to enable quick boot or fast boot, but I don't have it in my head unit, is there a way to enable that option? Is there a "hibernate mode" for Android like the one in windows? Any ideas are very appreciated. Thanks in advance

4k camera with small screen resolution

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 03:27 PM PST

I was on my bed and suddenly a thing crossed my mind. The thing was that.. My mobile camera supports 4K recording means I can record 4k resolution video with my mobile cam but at the same time it doesn't let me to watch 4k videos. Means I can't watch videos above 1080 in my mobile whether video is on YouTube or whatever platform. Now the question arises is when I record 4k video and then watch it.. Would I still be watching it in 4k?
