Best Google Photos similar app that stores photos locally?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 07:53 AM PDT

I am looking for an app that allows me to save my gallery to a external drive, but it has auto-categorization like Google Photos, or the "1 year ago" thing, for example.

    Swapping Phones

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 04:35 AM PDT

    Hello people of r/AndroidQuestions

Recently I've been thinking of getting a new phone, currently I have the iPhone 6s and although the speed is fine, the battery health has depleted over the 4 years I've had it (expected, I know)

I have been looking around for some phones which don't cost too much but seem like substantial upgrades and the Google Pixel 4a seems like the best option Link to where I would buy

My max budget I would say is £350 but as I will not be buying the phone for at least another month, I may be able to get more, but I believe £350 is a nice price, and so I'm not sure if there's any better spec-d phone than that Pixel 4a I linked or not

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Have a good day Reader!

    Need help solving a mystery

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:12 AM PDT

Hi friends, I will make this short and sweet so it doesn't get rambly.

My microphone works. But when I am in a video call, none of my video apps have permission to activate it. This started out of the blue.

I have gone into app permissions and given everything access. I have done a factory reset of my phone. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my apps. I have tried all normal solutions, focusing on permissions.

Since I use Google to back up all my settings, I think somewhere in my account it has saved something barring microphone access, and that's why the factory reset did nothing.

I have an LG G7 fit that has no other problems. I have no idea how to solve this. Thank you in advance!

    Integration of 90/120Hz.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 08:55 AM PDT

While i was watching some reviews of phones that have a 90/120Hz screen, i noticed that not all 90+ FPS compatible games run at 90+ FPS, some of them are stuck at 60. Why is that? Doesn't it suck? I mean people are paying extra money for high refresh rate screens, but they can not benefit from it, as far as gaming is concerned. Do all games need to be optimized for each phone to run at higher FPS?

And the second question: Do OEMs optimize their software for high refresh rate phones so the animations can run at 90/120 FPS on those phones? If the animations and transitions are still running at 60 FPS, what is the point of having a 90/120Hz screen other than playing some games and scrolling through some apps?

Apps stop running when I turn off my screen

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 11:22 AM PDT

    Hi friends,

As the title says, apps such as Spotify and Maps stop running in the background when my screen is turned off. I assumed it was a data/battery problem, so I whitelisted both apps for background data and battery usage, but nothing changed. This happens despite the fact that I have both my music and local maps downloaded for offline usage. It also happens when I don't use any particular battery or data optimization settings. Maps also loses connection with GPS. I've tried restarting my phone. I have a Galaxy A40.

Anyone know what else I can try to fix it?

I do not understand Android notifications.

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:52 PM PDT

So I'll start by saying that I have a Samsung S20 unlocked. I bought it directly from Samsung's online store, and I currently use Tmobile as a carrier.

My main problem is that I always get super delayed or late notifications, even when my connection is perfect. This applies to every app on my phone (Snapchat, Discord, Twitter, Instagram, etc.). I have tried many methods to fix this, like making sure apps are not optimized, double-checking their permissions to make sure they can send notifications, and turning off the "putting apps to sleep" setting. After doing all that, I still get delayed notifications, and I have no idea what to do. I want to get notifications the second something happens, but instead, it waits for me to wake the phone, and then it bombards me with late notifications.

Is there a way I can get my phone to receive notifications the second they happen without having to root my device? I would highly appreciate any advice you guys may have.

UPDATE: Alright guys, I think I fixed it. I'll tell you exactly what I did. I took all night to understand my phone's settings and I tried to look everywhere and understand everything.

    1. I made sure that no app I installed was being optimized under "Optimize Battery Usage."
    2. I made sure that everything was removed or turned off under "App power management" (This is where the sleeping apps settings were for me).
    3. I made sure that everything under the "Notifications" settings menu was set to my liking.
    4. I made sure that all of my other Devices/PCs were turned off just in case notifs were being read there instead of my S20.
    5. I messed with the "power mode" settings under "Battery" and so far I've kept it on optimized with my previous settings on top of that (I also turned off "Adaptive power saving").
    6. While I was doing this, I turned off data and stayed on WIFI. I believe I was on the 5G version of my WIFI and everything is working fine. I'm currently trying 5G Cellular data via TMobile and it seems to be working fine so far. I'll switch to LTE if things get bad.
    7. I made sure my phone wasn't silent (It was never silent btw).
    8. My phone has been on Bluetooth this entire time and no issues.
    9. I restarted my phone after applying all settings and it's working as intended so far.
    10. Data saver has never been turned on during any time.

I can't think of anything else I did. If I did anything else, I just looked up "Battery" in my phone settings and went through EVERY possible setting, and did a bunch of testing. In colclusion, my phone is working as intended right now, and I havnt come accross any problems. (Also, my phone's battery is still holding up to about a day with these settings, and I have almost every social media app known to man not optimized.) I hope my experience helps others and thank you all for the suggestions and replies!

Is it possible to add 5G capability to a 4G phone?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 06:42 AM PDT

I have a factory unlocked S10 Lite that doesn't support 5G, however, I would be curious to see if there was a way to add 5G capabilities, either with an adapter of some kind that you put your SIM card into and plug into the phone or perhaps (somehow) a case of some sorts?

I realize that 5G is not very developed yet, but I was just wondering if this was possible, somehow.

Can I use the Tablet version of an app on my phone (Note 8)?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 10:22 AM PDT

I'm 80% sure I've used the full tablet version of certain apps when I had my Note 4 (by using a separate app that unlocks hidden settings for installed apps).

My Note 4 was also rooted. I haven't bothered rooting my Note 8. Not sure if that makes a difference.

"You may not be able to use this card with google pay here"

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 10:10 AM PDT

I keep getting this error whenever I try to use google pay. I tried cards from multiple banks as well as on 3 different phones. All gives the same error so it's definitely not a hardware or card issue. Google pay was working fine for me until mid September when this error started appearing. Any ideas?

Semi-Urgent: Motorola G7 Power Corrupted Android, what options do I have to recover data before factory reset?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 10:01 AM PDT

    Hello All,

I have a Motorola G7 Power, last night the battery died and the phone powered off, and when I plugged it back in it just showed the Android Recovery screen.

    motorola/ocean_retail/ocean9/PPOS29.114-134-16/a62f4c user/release-keys

The only options on there are try again and factory reset data.

I'd like to recover the data on it before I factory Reset. Repairing it is somewhat urgent because I have a flight tomorrow.

I have a empty microsd card with me, an external hard drive, A windows computer, and a Macbook.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Will a usb-c multitap adapter work with multiple USB controllers?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 09:22 AM PDT

I have a couple 8bitdo wired controllers I use with my Raspberry Pi and recently bought a tablet (Galaxy Tab S7) and the idea crossed my mind for emulators. Is this doable or is bluetooth the best way to go?

Can't scroll text by dragging my fingers

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 09:18 AM PDT

As long as I've had an Android phone, I've scrolled through text by dragging one finger along the text to essentially pull it along. This is especially important with things like urls, where the full line does not fit on the screen and I need to be able to scroll through it horizontally.

Since I updated to Android 11, this no longer works. Instead, it magnifies the text my finger is on, ostensibly to make it easier to place the cursor between 2 specific characters. I don't need this; I need to be able to scroll through my text.

I've checked and all my accessibility features are off. As far as I can tell, there's no seeing for this in gboard. Is this a feature of Android 11 that I just can't turn off? It's been exceedingly frustrating and I can't find any information on this problem.

How do I recover my data from a Galaxy A5 2017 with a broken screen (blank)

So my battery is messed up.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:04 AM PDT

2 days ago my moto g7 performed an auto update for a recent security patch. But since that happened and the update was fully apply my phone won't charge. Even weirder, when the phone is on it won't give any sign of charge but when I completely turn it off it will charge as normal. Do you guys have any idea of what could have happened?

Is there a website or app that does statistical analysis of apps (individual) on Google Play Store?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 07:32 AM PDT

Is there a app/website that provides statics of individual Google play apps. I know there is a analytical app Google themselves provide, but that is if you are the actual owner of the app. Is there one where users can see how many reviews were posted each month, calculate the rating it got that month? When updates were released for that particular app, and does it correlate with a surge in reviews and downloads?

Basically i want to see if a developer is posting fake/incentive based reviews. E.g. is there are sudden unusual random surge in reviews.

    Root x Jailbreak help

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 07:29 AM PDT

So, i've been thinking on migrating from IOS to android. I'm jailbroken on IOS (equivalent to root on Android) and I was asking myself if the android root would work somewhat similarly as the ios jailbreak.

You see, on jailbreak, all the stuff you install are "tweaks" they're like mods that you install directly on the original apps. I've never seem this kind of thing on android, all i've seem are modded apks, which you install separated from the original app and that then wont be able to update directly from google store later.

In conclusion, do the android root have a system like the jailbreak i've just mentioned, where you install things directly to the original apps and that will still allow you to update the app later?

please help me chosing a mobile

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 06:41 AM PDT

just as a reference, my previous mobile was a Samsung Galaxy S6 active

where i am located atm these two models are my best option, so now i am torn between the samsung A11 and the samsung A01:

the A11 is just what i need on a mobile (also in price), but the 6.4 inch screen is much too big for me, need to use both hands to use it, it doesn't properly fit in the pocket from my trousers and bermudas, also being big and slim makes it hard to hold properly and feel like i will break it quite soon from dropping it (and i never dropped my previous mobile in 5 years of use)

the A01 ha sluggish perfomance, but still might be just enough for the basic stuff and i could get used to it, but also it will be outdated soon (it uses a cpu from 2017), but it is the only samsung mobile that has a 5.7 inch screen, which still is too big, but much better then the 6+ inches from all the other models

    Android Choice Screen

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 06:19 AM PDT

I am running the OnePlus Nord. How do I start the Android Choice Screen after setup? The one that says "Choose your search engine provider". "The choice you make below will determine the defualt in a search box on your home screen and in Chrome. If you don't have the provider's app, it will be downloaded from Play."

If I manually set the search-engine in the "search box" and in Chrome and then download the DuckDuckGo app, will that provide the same functionality as this screen? Please can you link me to the source code for the segment in Android so that I can check out what it does from the code?
