Tivo Streak 4K Impressions... Get it.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 05:12 PM PDT

I bought a Shield, and traded up to a Shield Pro so I could have a USB port... I bought the Tivo Stream 4K for all of the auxilliary TVs in my house, I am going to sell the Shield Pro now and use one of these for the main TV.

    The most important bits:

    1. It has 2 USB charging ports, one is USB-C and the other is Micro-USB. What does this mean? This means if you use a hardware Ethernet port charging dongle on the Micro-USB, and then plug a keyboard, storage, or probably even a USB hub into the other. This gives you more options. I verified plugging a keyboard into the USB-C while simultaneously using Ethernet on the Micro-USB.
    2. It has the full Android TV experience, and by all rights it appears as good as the 2020 version of the Shield / Shield pro, at least for the media I tried to play.
    3. It has Dolby Atmos and Vision, I'm pretty sure this is the only media player device with it at this price point.
    4. I can't really tell the difference between the Shield's AI upscaling and whatever upscaling this device is using.
    5. Plays well with my media stack: Plex, Youtube TV, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, PlutoTV and others.

    The annoyances, and their fixes:

    1. It has apps you can't remove or disable, locked into the first slot of the app favorites, and the "channels". You can disable this by Settings->Apps->See all apps->Scroll down to select "Show system apps" ... From this list Disable "com.tivo.tvlaunchercustomization" and Clear Data on "Android TV Home". Now your favorites and channels are editable like a default Android TV experience.
    2. It has prominently placed buttons that pull up said apps. You can get an app in the app store called "Button Mapper". You can change the Tivo, Guide, Info and other buttons to pull up whatever you like instead. I made the Tivo button pull up Youtube TV, the Guide is an alternate Home button, and Info is a Menu button.

This little box is fantastic and is miles ahead of the built-in TV apps, the one Roku TV I have, and the little Amlogic / Mii type android boxes I was using in the past. It feels FAST and smooth, super polished... and it's 1/4 of the price of the Shield Pro.

    Remote help

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 04:01 AM PDT

I live in Turkey and we have crazy taxes on foreign tech so I did some research and bought a Peaq tv. From what I can tell, it's basically a Lenovo but produced in partnership with MediaMarkt (a German-run Best Buy type of place) and made in Turkey. Obviously, I'm here because it's Android.

The problem is that my remote has stopped working. It's not batteries because there's a red light on the thing that works, the TV has stopped responding. I connected my mouse and fussed around in the settings but there was nothing about the remote. Now I'm super fucked because I connected my computer via HDMI cable and now there's apparently no way to get back to the "home screen". I've tried restarting it and I fully power it down (both w/o the hdmi cable connected) but nothing has worked, it's still suck on the hdmi input.

So I'm wondering a few things. Is there a separate remote I can get that would just work (like with a usb connector similar to a mouse)? Or could I get a mi stick and just plug that in and have it work without needing to access the home screen? Or is there like a magic way to fix this that I don't know about?

I'm super at a loss as to what to do and really irritated because I ordered the thing online and there was nothing to say that I needed to have a guy come and "install" it otherwise my warranty would be voided but that's apparently what has happened. I just never would have guessed that I needed someone to literally just take it out of the box, put the little feet on it, place it on my tv stand, and plug it in.

Extra info: the model no is apparently SN49DAL08. I googled what I thought was the model number to try to troubleshoot and didn't find it so after more googling, it looks like it's been rebranded as Sunny because there's a picture of my tv but instead of having "Peaq" on the front it says "Sunny". I have no idea what's going on, tbh.

I have relatively limited access to foreign tech and I can't order tech from abroad. Thanks, Turkey.

    Best TV browser

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 07:17 AM PDT

I use my TV mostly for streaming, Netflix, prime, but also like to stream websites with video on them. I have tried the air TV mini, with puffin and Samsung browser, but the device seems to freeze, and I have not been able to find a good cursor app, have been using Android TV remote as well as cursor remote.

I have also used the fire TV with Firefox and silk browsers, do seem to work better, but still cursor and control are not what they could be.

With the Nvidia shield do anyting better in terms of browsing. My understanding is that it is simply better in terms of gaming due to the hardware. It does not improve streaming.

So my question is what device or solution do my current devices can make my browsing experience more closely match my phone browsing experience. Is there another device that may be better for my needs?

One solution that I have Come upon is the web video caster app, this can usually cast a web stream to my TV

Philips Ambilight TV - iPlayer app error

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 06:01 AM PDT

Hi. Sorry if this has been posted before. I've got a fairly new Philips 50PUS8204 ambilight TV and I get an error message with the BBC iPlayer app every time I try to watch a programme. It says There is a Problem Loading This Programme. I have to do a full power-off and restart. The app is baked into the OS so I can't delete it and reinstall. Any ideas?

Sony AG9 mic LED keeps turning on

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 02:08 PM PDT

    Hi,

Recently got a Sony 55" AG9 and loving it so far, except for one annoying glitch. Assistant microphone red/orangish LED keeps turning on. I turn it off in settings, but it randomly switches back on. Happened during a night while TV was off. Happened right after using some voice command. Happened even when I switched it off and on closing the menu it lit up again and setting was back on.

The only way I find that's working, is disabling "OK Google" , but I want it to listen to it.

    Any insights?
    Thanks

    Some good sound, some bad?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 06:21 PM PDT

I am sorry if this has been answered before. But I am wondering why on my Sony Bravia Android tv,

Some apps have full dolby sound, and some do not? Hbo Max= Dolby, while Netflix with upgraded package for 4k and multiple devices is only stereo?

    Any help appreciated,

    Thank You

Mouse going bananas on Steam Link app

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 09:33 PM PDT

So I primarily use my Shield to stream games from my computer to the TV. I prefer to use Steam Link over game stream, it just seems to have less hiccups. But I usually stick to controller games, as I haven't had a couch keyboard and mouse option until now. I recently got a nice lapboard and wireless keyboard and mouse, they both work great on the Shield, but when I open a game through Steam Link the mouse is insanely sensitive. I move it an inch down and I'm looking at toes, nudge it upward and I'm looking straight up. I thought it might have something to do with the mouse input on my PC so I turned the dpi waaaay down, but didn't change anything.

Has anyone else had this issue? Were you able to solve it?

If it's more likely to be a PC issue I'll remove this post but I would really love to figure this out.
