    Making Samsung Homescreen Grandfather safe?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 07:53 AM PDT

    Hello,

so (un)fortunately my family had the idea to introduce my grandparents to smartphones. My grandmother is now at a point where only the occasional support request regarding how to do stuff comes in. My grandfather doesn't seem to understand anything about the phone apart from his sudoku app.

Somehow though, he manages to continuously delete said app from the home screen which I have to readd later because he doesn't understand the concept of the app drawer.

He uses a Galaxy J6 I believe. Basically when you press an app icon a bit too long it will show options like "remove from Home" or even worse, "uninstall". Both things have happened before. I can somewhat block uninstallation using applock but I am seemingly powerless against "remove from Home".

Does anyone here have any tips on how to prevent this from happening?

Edit: Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try locking the home screen

Is there a perfect phone with any HDMI support with a headphone jack

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 12:43 AM PDT

My main phone that I use for calls and apps is a Galaxy A01, it has a headphone jack but no HDMI support. My secondary phone is a Galaxy Note10, it has HDMI support but no headphone, I mainly use it as like a console for games like GTA San Andreas, the 2D Sonic games and PSP games. I also have a third phone that I plan on using as basically an mp3 player for saved music -which is an Droid Turbo 2- because I don't have that much storage on my Galaxy A01. I'm not really a phone expert but is there like a perfect phone where I can play my games on a TV and also listen to music on headphones?

    Possible malware infecting predictive text...?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:37 AM PDT

    Hi r/AndroidQuestions,

I hope this is the right place to post this, we're stumped by a weird malware(?) problem.

My other half has a weird problem on her phone (OPPO A77; Android v6.0). In every app she tries, whenever she brings up the keyboard to enter text, it brings up a 'suggested word' that appears to be a spammy COVID19 alert: COVID notification.

She tried to remove the 'suggested word' by tapping and dragging it, but that opened a link in Chrome, which she closed before it loaded.

She's recently installed a couple of third-party apps, but only ones with Google Play approval or ones from local businesses we've interacted with IRL. I've run a Malware Bytes scan, with no results. The COVID tracking system options were already off. She's erased all cookies and caches on her web browser. We've also wiped the predictive text's bank of user-inputted words. All to no avail.

    Any ideas? Cheers in advance!

Why is MTP still a thing in 2020?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:02 AM PDT

    Gday gents,

This might sound like a bit of a rant (it is) but I also want to try and understand this aspect of Android.

We live in an era of smartphones that routinely break the $1000-mark, with as much ram and power as your average desktop, with cameras that can beat most consumer shooters, storage capacities in hundreds of gigabytes, damn things even shoot 8K videos now. The marketing shoved in your face is all about being fast; 4G, 5G! USB3.1! Wifi 6! Whatever!

So why on god's green earth is the fundamental act of transferring files to a PC still being tied down to this ridiculous shitshow called MTP even on flagships like the P40 Pro?

(No, I didn't buy Huawei's proprietary glorified micro sd card so card readers are a no-go.)

Is there an always visible dock for Android?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 01:26 AM PDT

Hi, I've been googling on and off for months for something like this but alas, the closest thing I've found are docks that need to slide in from the sides. Basically I want something like a macOS dock or windows taskbar on the side of my screen at all times. It is much more useful for tablets when multitasking in my opinion. Anyone know of anything like this at all?

    Thanks in advance!

High data usage of unknown/hidden app

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 03:42 AM PDT

This month I depleted all my plans data. My phone displays a total use of 6GB this month, but when Looking in the settings data usage statistics, it shows completely different, way lower, usage. There is no app there that shows a high data usage. Even for today my phone shows 1GB used, but the total apps usage shows only 200MB. Apparently it's not showing all apps.

How can I find the culprit of the extreme data usage?

easiest way to listen to own music on phone?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 12:12 PM PDT

Okay, so I'm not good with technology lol so the way I used to listen to my own music was the following: - download it via youtube converter - use USB to transfer it to phone - it would automatically play on Google Play Music

BUT Google Play Music is being discontinued I think AND my new phone does not have USB.

What's the best way to listen to the music I download from youtube on my phone? Now I uploaded the music to Google Drive and open Drive on my phone but it's a hassle plus it does not go to the next song automatically.

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: my phone is a Motorola. Will check what type later.

What's something cool to do with a good but unused Android smartphone?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:32 AM PDT

As the title says, i have a pretty good smartphone (value of about 250€) but i don't have any use for it and can't really sell it.

What could be some good uses for it? I thought about an emulator for old consoles (but i find the touch screen pretty bad for gaming) or a Web server to host something on it. If you have any other idea, I'd love to hear it!

Is my samsung galaxy s8 salvageable?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:31 AM PDT

Guess i have to post this here and hope someone responds in the next 2 years, since the Android thread is too good to help anybody. ANYWAYS, i have this phone, it got dropped in a turnstile at work. After that it stopped charging, started saying that there was "moisture detected in the port", and eventually died and never turned back on. There was no water near that phone, but i presumed that moisture from the air could have gotten through the many new cracks in the glass seal. I looked up a YouTube tutorial, and forcefully removed the glass back of the phone. Everything still seemed to be in tact, i only removed the SD card. I need to retrieve the contents of my gallery off that device, does it look fixable? I'm in the east coast of the USA, so there's no "android store" or anything, only stores like Apple, Sprint, and Verizon. We have small phone shops, price isn't particularly an issue, but I'm not paying for someone to just tell me if it is or isn't salvageable.

Pixel 3a: high battery usage from "mobile network standby"

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:23 AM PDT

It uses like 6% of my battery each charge without ever having mobile data enabled. Is there anyway for that process to not use battery at all without manually inserting/removing my sim card each time I go outside?

    I've tried seemingly everything

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:21 AM PDT

I have an Alcatel 3V with Metro by T-MOBILE. Everything has been great with the phone, until the last 24 hours. I'm receiving texts. It says my texts are being sent, but none of my contacts are receiving them. I'm also able to make calls. My mobile network seems to have a strong connection. I've checked all my settings and everything seems to be in order.

-I've shut it down and turned it back on -I've reset the mobile network -I've done a hard reset of the whole phone -I've taken the SIM card out and put it back in -I've toggled with airplane mode -I've spoken with two different representatives on the phone and they did everything within their power to fix it. They said it's so odd that texts are getting to me with no issues but can't be delivered to others.

    Does anyone have ANY idea?

    Spellcheck based on 1st letter?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:18 AM PDT

I am having this weird issue with the default keyboard's spellcheck that no one else I talk to is also having.

Basically if I spell a word wrong it puts red squiggles under it and then if you double tap on it it suggests possible words. Sounds normal, right?

But it's only suggesting possible words based on the first letter?

So if I meant to type "relevisions" instead of "televisions" thus getting 91% of the word correct it will instead suggest something like rainbows or receipts.

    Anyone know what's up here?

    Xoom question

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:17 AM PDT

My old Xoom still works. I always use MX player but I screwed up and let it update. It won't run on my Android version. 4.0.4. MX is unresponsive when I ask about reverting to the older version of their player. I guess since they have their money from me they don't care.

I saw a video of a Xoom with 4.1.2 but mine claims there is no update.

Playing videos is the problem. That's all I use it for. I tried VLC but it chokes on the larger files.

Is there a way to force an update. Can anyone recommend a better player?

Why does google own app don't show in the permission manager ?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 07:23 AM PDT

Why does google own app don't show in the permission manager ?

I have a samsung phone, wanted to quickly check what app i gave phone permission to so i went into permission manager. There were a few samsung app but nothing too bad.

yet when i went into google play service application, it showed permission granted for 11 activites, including phone, agenda, photo, call log, sms, etc...

not a single of them showed in permission manager, i checked other app later and it only hide them for 'google play service'.

it's known android is a big platform for google to collect data but i thought they were honnest about that and wouldn't hide thing.

Weird keyboard behaviour on HTC U12+

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:05 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

Straight to the point - yesterday, when I used Uber App, my keyboard suggestion box got changed somehow, instead of showing word suggestions the only thing that appears is "Get newest COVID-19 news" and points to World Health Organisation. I tried resetting keyboard settings, turning on and off predictions etc. nothing works - what do i do now?

How good are AirPods Pro with an Android phone?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 07:16 AM PDT

I'm thinking of buying AirPods Pro because they check all the boxes for me. But I would like to know what features I would be missing if I use them with my Android phone.

I know that quick pairing and in ear detection won't work. But what about the controls customization and the different ANC related modes? Also, if I pair it with an iPhone and change some of the settings, will they still be saved while using an Android phone or will it revert back to the original settings?

Is there a way to have Apps auto-update to My SD Card?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:56 AM PDT

My cellphone has little memory. I always try to move apps I install to the SD card, if there is an option.

However, whenever they auto-update, it seems to move them off the SD card and back into memory. And then I have to notice that I'm running low of memory and manually move them back again.

Is there a way to have the apps auto-update, but if they were moved to an SD card have them automatically move back after the update?

How to make android app not detect outside activities

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:46 AM PDT

I have this app developed by University that detects if we go to splitscreen or open notification panel or switch to another app and the app shuts down. is there anyway to avoid this detection by root or using any exposed module ? the app should not be able to detect if we put it in splitscreen and focus on another app

Pixel Buds vs Galaxy Buds+ vs Galaxy Buds Live vs Jaybird Vista vs Sennheiser Momentum Wireless

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:54 AM PDT

I have a Note9 and might get a Nord if I become a beta tester. I really don't know which wireless earbuds I should get, as you can clearly see. I am mainly considering the Pixel Buds, but there are so many options that I can choose from.

Which ones would you guys suggest?

EDIT: Another choice I've decided to include is Airpods Pro. However, I'm kinda just putting them here just to put them here as an alternative to some of them. I am also adding the Anker Soundcore Liberty 2 Pros.

    Incorrect Country Code Displayed

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:46 AM PDT

When I send texts to my partner my number is displayed as +44 yet we both live in the Philippines (myself for 20+ years). I am using a Samsung A10S running Android 10 with a genuine simcard from a service provider.

To my knowledge this has never happened before since I have lived here. Can anyone throw some light as to why this is happening please.

    Many thanks
