Audio recording on Xiaomi/Redmi devices is abysmal

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 07:20 AM PDT

Just a fair warning for those who consider buying one. Sound in videos is limited to 96 kbit/s mono. While there is a mod that allows audio tracks to be recorded with 320 kbit/s on paper, it doesn't change the quality whatsoever. This affects the Note series and some Mi phones (for instance the Mi 9), not sure about more expensive devices.

To put it in perspective, my 8 year old Xperia Sola manages to record better sound than my 2020 200€ Redmi Note 9S.

    Go Back Gesture Animation Refresh

Anyone else think the Pixel's "Go Back" gesture looks unfinished and kinda boring? I really like the look of MIUI's Go Back gesture or something similar to it.

Reevaluating the value of Flagships now that GCam is more accesible

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 12:47 PM PDT

So I got a mid-range Galaxy and its camera is terrible. However I downloaded GCam and it took spectacular photographs, even with the front camera! Literally one of the best photos I've ever taken was using GCam portrait mode on the front camera.

My main reason for wanting Flagship phones are the camera. I always thought that camera hardware was the main determinant of a phone's photo quality but GCam proved otherwise. So if you can get great quality pictures on a mid-range phone, are Flagships still worth it?

    Android Search: what gives?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 03:22 PM PDT

Does anyone else notice how anemic the search function on stock Android devices is? You can get results from the web, search for an app by name installed on your phone, and... well that's pretty much it.

Why wouldn't Android search not search through data in apps like Gmail, Drive, etc. as well as other applications who expose data (and you permit) for searching?

I know web search has some private data that can be retrieved but only by using special search terms. It all seems like an area the platform should be totally killer at, but isn't.

I know some other launchers may add additional capabilities, but I just found it weird that Android itself isn't more integrated and useful this way.
