Dead games still worth playing (The Sequel)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 08:45 AM PDT

In response to the following post: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidGaming/comments/hkg1ts/dead_games_still_worth_playing_list_in_the/

Since people asked me to share my own list of dead (but still worth playing) games, here you go:

    Action games

Here I gathered action-heavy games from different genres and types: 2D and 3D, first-person or third-person, with RPG elements and without them - does not matter if the game itself is good.

    • Bladeslinger is the first mobile game I deeply fell in love with. We didn't have Dark Souls back then, but man, this old game looks (and plays) great even by today's standards. I spent countless hours on it and has hoping that the sequel would be released soon. Unfortunately, this never happened, so I won't ever know how the story ends.
    • Epoch is a story of abandoned robot who felt lonely and ventured on the journey to find his human master, obliterating anything on his way in the process. The gameplay is nothing fancy: you hide, and shoot, and dodge, and time it right. Upgrade weapons and skills as you progress. Story was there simply to justify the massacre. The sequel, Epoch 2, took one step further, enriching the gameplay, improving story (and pretty much every aspect of the game). Unfortunately, I didn't have patience to finish it (due to the need for grinding for better armor/weapons), so I do not know how the story ends either...
    • Another hack/block/dodge combat game was Horn. This, however, had exploration aspect, interesting story, RPG elements and a lot of grinding on higher levels. Abandoned it at some point, but plan to play it again sometimes.
    • God of Blades (do not confuse with Blade of God, God of War, Blade 2 or any of that) is another hask&slash game - a runner of sorts this time. The graphics are amazing, the story is out there somewhere (good luck understanding it), the controls are simple and responsive, blood and jibs fly in every possible direction. But it becomes boring. After you finish with the campaigns and unlock all the blades, you no longer want to play endless mode anymore. Still, I install it from time to time - wish it had multiplayer battles (like PC version has).
    • Fearless Fantasy... heh. Not sure what to make of it. I just love the absurdity and silliness of the game's setting, its adorable characters and ridiculous story line. The gameplay is that of rhythm games (you know, the ones where you tap buttons while listening to music), but in conjunction with RPG elements, it makes this game something truly unique.
    • Silver Bullet demonstrates what you can achieve if you take Lara Croft's 3D model from Tomb Raider 2013, give her a new red haircut, enlarge what is large already, and put her inside a secret lab infested by demon zombies... Just kidding... The game is good though: heavy action-packed shooter with nice visuals and decent story. The final boss is a b*tch, though - never finished the game because of that.

    RPG/Adventure games

Some RPGs were already mentioned in action section (take that for a rhyme!), but those were the games where action element stood about RPG element. Here is vise versa: action is secondary to character leveling aspects. Also turn-based RPGs are here:

    • Tales of Illyria. My favorite series of games. Of all times. Now and forever. And ever... ok, ok. They are just good. The oregon-trail-like experience where you gather a party, stock up supplies and travel between cities completing quests and fighting bad guys. Random events included. Combat is turn-based, semi-automatic: characters battle nicely on their own, performing attacks and using skills when their turn comes, but you are able to interfere, giving specific commands to specific party members. The series consist of three games: Fallen Knight featuring a renowned warrior falsely accused of murdering his own father and desperately trying to restore his good name; Beyond the Iron Wall where you play a young female warrior from the desert land, which was separated from the rest of civilized world by a large iron wall, in her quest to better know the foreign cultures exposed after the wall fell, eventually befriending or conquering the new lands; and Destinies which finally allowed us to create our own character and do pretty much whatever we want to. Truth be told, once you finish each of them and see everything there is to see, there is no desire to play them again (except for maybe the third one, as main quests differ depending on which country you choose), but trying them at least once is an absolute must for any self-respecting mobile RPG fan.
    • Inotia 3: Children of Carnia. I believe, Inotia (or Zenonia) series do not require introductions of any sort. Inotia 4 is still out there, but for some reason I liked the third one much more. There are 6 classes to try, so you theoretically can play it till the world's end, but I haven't finished it even once, I believe due to the reason called "the final boss".
    • Destinia is another of those types of games. Back in a day mobile slashers were fast and simple and could run on almost anything, offering hours of interesting gameplay without lags or micro transactions. If memory serves me right, Destinia had 3 classes, each of which you could develop in one of three directions, which gave us tons of replayability. And I tried nearly all of them. Actually, Gamevil has a lot of similar games (some of them still available in Google Play), but I find this one's story/characters to be the most interesting from the bunch.
    • Sage Fusion and Sage Fusion 2 form a two-parted adventure, which is a space opera of sorts with great story, memorable characters and unusual (for jRPGs) type of combat, where you not only give orders to your party members, but actively participate in their execution (much like Legend of Dragoon... - sorry, this is irrelevant, but I could not find another way to remind people about Legend of Dragoon). Won't spoil anything to you: find this game and try it - it's well worth it.
    • Skyhill - zombie-survival rogue-like RPG with exploration, procedural generation, crafting, limited resources and turn-based battles. Pretty much the same as you do in modern f2p games, but single player and without micro transactions. The game is hard, you will die a lot, but it's worth it to beat it at least once. Or better five times, as there are multiple endings to the story.

    Strategy/Tactics

I like turn-based strategies more real-time ones, but that's irrelevant here. Modern mobile strategies imply multiplayer, grinding, waiting, socializing, pay-to-win, microtransactions etc. etc. I hate all that. Here are some nice military and economical strategies without all of that:

    • Autumn Dynasty is probably the best real-time strategy for mobile. Everything you need is there: good visuals, interesting story, great controls, variety and diversity. Absolutely love it (except for the fact that I am personally very bad at it).
    • 1849: Gold Edition is a building/simulator/strategy game similar to such titles as Caesar, Pharaoh, etc. Grab your banjo and set on a journey to California to mine all the gold there is to mine.
    • Frozen Synapse is a unique tactical game in which you control a squad of soldiers and venture on various missions in cyberpunk city. What makes this game unique is the gameplay in which you plan moves for all your squad members for the next 5 seconds, while your opponent does the same for his troops. When both are done planning, they execute their moves simultaneously while you sit and watch the outcome of your mutual actions. This game was hard as hell but interesting nonetheless. Was re-released as Frozen Synapse Prime with same gameplay but superior graphics (I personally enjoy original graphics more).
    • If you (like me) find Frozen Synapse to be too hard for your brain, here is (or rather, was) a cute adorable [Grain Reapers]() game where a bunch of crops fight over something valuable (have no idea what that might be) in space western setting. The gameplay is similar: both plan their turns, then watch them simultaneously executed. Too bad this game was abandoned by developer and then removed from Google Play altogether. P.S. Still available on Amazon Store, though. Hurray!
    • Another tactical game with simultaneous turns (man, I like these) is Ravenmark from Witching Hour Studious (now dead company known for their great love for deep lore and long texts). They started with Scourge of Estellion - a single-player set of campaigns, - and released multiplayer Mercenaries shortly after. Won't spoil anything, but the gameplay is entirely different to anything you've seen in other turn-based strategy games.

    Stealth

Not a fan of stealth games (don't have enough patience for them). So there will be not many games in the list:

    • Stealth Bastard Deluxe Lead your bastard through cleverly made puzzle levels, stay hidden in shadows, avoid security cameras, traps, lasers or die trying. Actually, die a lot. P.S. This game is actually alive by the name of Stealth Inc. 2: Game of Clones, but I do not have NVidia Shield to play it.

    Puzzles

There are a lot of good puzzles I've played back in the day. I don't miss them much, since there are plenty of other good puzzles around. Here are some that stand from the rest:

    • Osmos was one of the first I played and enjoyed. Controlling a sphere your goal was to consume other spheres around you, starting from the smallest and becoming bigger with each sphere you consume. The mechanic itself is nothing new, but the way it was presented with a bunch of unique levels made oSmos stand from the rest.
    • Splice was another of visually stunning puzzles, where you had to grow a bunch of microbes to match the required structure. Easy at first, it became challenging pretty fast.
    • If you like sliding puzzles (I personally hate them) then Cogs is the best out there (somewhere).
    • Strata was one of the easy ones having you unweave patterns of colorful lines. Once you figure out the method for it, it's becomes more like meditation than brain straining.
    • SpaceChem was, on the contrary, one of the hardest puzzles around. It required you to create sequences of operations to assemble different chemical elements. In Space. Check out The Sequence for similar gameplay.
    • The Sandbox game offers you a sandbox (surprise, surprise) in which you can do pretty much anything. Create the world, develop the world, destroy the world, repeat. Mix different elements and watch them react with each other, discover new elements, engineer complex mechanisms and contraptions, solve puzzles and many much more. The game's successor, Evolution is still out there, but aside from fancy graphics it does not offer anything completely different. I'm not much into pointless sandbox-type games, but I have spent a fair share of hours on this one, until I discovered everything it had to offer at that time.

    Puzzle Adventures

Pretty much like puzzles, but about adventure: going from one place to another and solving puzzles along the way.

    • Nightsky is my absolute favorite. Gorgeous art style, relaxing soundtrack, realistic physics, adequate puzzles, lots of beautiful worlds to explore. True masterpiece for something as simple as navigating a glass sphere through levels. This game even has some kind of a story - even though as surrealistic as you might expect.
    • I was surprised to find out that Thomas Was Alone is no longer in the store - the game appeared to be not that old (P.S. In reality, it was released in 2012). Nevermind, all the more reasons to put it here in the list and remind people of how good it is. Do not be distracted by simplistic gameplay (what could be exciting about controlling a red rectangle - it's not even a sphere) - the game offers a deep psychological story, which you absolutely must experience yourself - some people even claim this game has changed their lives.

    Racing games

Sorry, not a fan of racing games. Especially due to the fact that most of the mobile racing games have either acceleration or brake button (or both) missing, doing the most essential gameplay thing for you. And they also love to rely on device's gyroscopes for steering, which I find very uncomfortable to use. Well.

    • Here is the game which you control with just one finger! Take that, mobile racing games! Seriously, Slingshot Racing was a surprising thing to find. Later did I find out that there are tons of games utilizing the same mechanic. Also this game is practically unbeatable for someone as average as myself, so I ended up quitting at some point.

There are a lot of good games that did not make it to the list. Some of them I don't even remember playing, others are fortunately still available in Play Store to pick up and play. Let's cherish these little gems we still have around - in the world so rapidly changing, we may lose sight of them very quickly.

Good day to everyone and have a nice time playing!

P.S. Attentive readers have already realized that I took most of these great games from Humble Indie Bundles that used to be a great thing back in a day. Too bad they focus on PC/Mac games now and abandoned Android long time ago...

Looking for a new "strategy" game

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:05 AM PDT

So I'm an absolute sucker for games like 'raid: shadow legends - the saga of adds and pops ups to buy stuff' and games of that nature. Typical collect characters, gear, level, upgrade, grind, evolve.

I would love to find a new one that feels clean. Please give me some recommendations and I will take a nosey. Ideally F2P, don't mind freemium... But don't want to spend.

As a side note. Use to play 'empire: four kingdoms' typical build and attack game, but that game stood out miles from all the other cookie cutter games of that genre. Any recommendations around that too!

[REQUEST] What are the best gory games on android?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:36 AM PDT

    Underrated games

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 02:45 AM PDT

    -Defender: TD Origins (Offline/Free)

Defender TD is a CCG/Tower Defense mash-up. You collect a variety of cards and upgrade them. Aswell as skill cards. And then use your cards to help you build towers on levels and fend off waves of enemies. The game is well optimized and very detailed. It also has a great fantasy/steampunk aesthetic combined with sharp 3D graphics.

-Footsies (Offline/Free) Footsies is a 2 player fighting game. It can be played on one device by two people or you can play solo and try to get high scores. The game is simplistic having only three buttons and 4 attack patterns. Every match is quick but engaging and it's a really fun game to play with your siblings or friends. The game is very small too considering it's only 8.9 mb.

-99 rockets (Offline/Free) There are 99 meteors and you have exactly 99 rockets. You miss one shot, you lose the game. 99 rockets is a time based game where you wait for the rocket to reach a specific spot in it's loop before you launch it into a target. Missing a shot will make you instantly lose the game so this can be either challenging or rage inducing depending on what kind of player you are.

-4 pillars (Offline/Free) 4 pillars is a low-poly hack and slash platformer. You play as a knight venturing in what seems to be the ruins of a castle. There are monsters and traps. And the combat is more of a hit-and-run type of gameplay. There isn't much combat variety and the combat can feel lacking, but the platforming aspect of the game is very fun.
