Tivo Stream 4K... in UK (Impressive Hardware - bad software)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:20 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

Managed to get the new Tivo Stream 4K in the UK by purchasing from Ebay.com. I use the 4K firestick and Nvidia Shield on a daily basis.

    Here are my initial thoughts

    Good Stuff

    • Very responsive UI
    • Very fast Wifi. With the 4K firestick, I never reached 200mb download but on this device, I can easily push close to 300mb
    • Tivo Stream app is OK
    • Storage expansion works via USB
      • I tested various USB drives, plugging directly in to the Type-C port and via a hub. I had the most consistent results with drives plugged direct in to the Tivo and not via a hub
    • All native streaming apps (Netflix / Youtube / Pluto) work fine
    • Sideloading works via Downloader
    • Mouse toggle works but needs a workaround to bring it up.

    Bad Stuff

    • Device is constantly pushing out HDR, even on the homescreen making the colours look weird.
      • On Youtube / Netflix, HDR looks and works great, its just its just on the homescreen the colours look wrong. Understand there is a fix via ADB.
    • Randomly the device just displays a blank screen, this is not specific to any particular application
      • Only fix it press the google button and tell it to open you settings. Alternatively pull the power cable
    • Double tapping home does not bring up recents menu
      • Temp fix is to install a button remapper and map one of the key to recents. I mapped the 'skip' key to do that. Works great but without a virtual mouse, no way to click on "Clear all"
    • USB Ethernet speeds and connectivity. Device would only recognise my uGreen USB 3.0 hub with gigabit ethernet, if I used an OTG cable in the micro USB port. This worked fine but I was never able to get anywhere near 200mb. Also, my ethernet would only work if USB Debugging was disabled.
    • Constant reboots when plugging things in to the TypeC port
    • Read numerous reports about the HDMI-CEC issue but as I plugged mine in to a monitor, its not something I experienced myself.

    Overall

    • Great hardware let down by poor, beta-like software (hopefully will be fixed with future update)

Put Android TV OS On raspberry pi 4

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:48 AM PDT

I've looked at many tutorials - lots of them do not work or just download a launcher from the play store and lose lots of functionality (like Google cast support). Has anyone had success putting Android TV on the pi 4?

How can I get this app on my TV?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 09:46 PM PDT

Recently got an android smart tv (first smart tv). I've only ever had an iPhone so this is my first time on google play store. I wanted to download RISK: Global Domination onto the TV since I saw you can get games from the google play store and I love that game. I looked it up online and google play store has that game. But I can't find it when searching on the TV. It just says no results found. Is there a way to fix this or is it just not able to go on the TV? If so, why would it be some games can and some can't? Like why do some show up in the store on the TV and some don't?

    Thanks in advance!

TIP: I turned a tablet to a YouTube TV screen with the 'Watch on TV' feature

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 10:31 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I posted a tip a few days ago on the sub about Youtube's Watch on TV/Device Linking feature, and you guys seemed to like it. So I'm back here with a new quick thing that you might find interesting too.

I have a Samsung tablet from a few years back. It's not the fastest most usable thing anymore, but it has a nice screen, stereo speakers, and it's in good condition. Its running Android 6. I mentioned in my previous post that I set it up as a companion screen for my TV. I have the YouTube apps linked as per the previous post, so I can read descriptions and comments for videos I'm watching on TV.

So for the tip today, I sideloaded the YouTube app for Android TV on the tablet. You can find the APK on the usual tursted archive sites, as the app store won't show it. The app installed for me just fine (your mileage may vary). It really doesn't want to play nice with the touch screen, as the app is designed to be used with a remote control, but otherwise it functions fine.

I went through the Watch on TV option, got a code, and linked my phone to the tablet. It showed up as a cast option just fine. I cast YouTube videos to it from my phone, and they play on the tablet screen. It's pretty cool. A tap on the tablet pauses the video in a pinch, which is neat.

Presumably, you can do this with any two Android devices (again, your mileage may vary), including casting form one phone to another. Not sure who needs that, but I'm not judging, haha. I personally like repurposing old hardware, so this is plus.

That's it! Hope you guys find it useful. Love to hear about your experience and particular application in the comments. I really enjoyed the feedback on the last post, so thanks for that!

    Cheers!

Do any Android tv boxes let you download Google Drive ?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:09 PM PDT

I have lots of media on my Drive and would like to buy an Android box and watch it on my tv. I'm not interested in Plex or Kodi. Looking to download Drive from the app store like i would do on a phone or tablet.

    Thank you.

Avoid users to use my TV by Chromecast Built-in.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 01:51 PM PDT

Is there any way to avoid people on my Wi-Fi network to use Chromecast built-in on my TV? I mean put a pincode or something. It's anoying because a lot of people have access to the same Wi-Fi network and sometimes stop my the playing content on my TV. I can't do it by Google Home. Sorry for my English, I'm from Argentina.

Why does YouTube suck so much on Android tV?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 09:52 AM PDT

I'm really having trouble understanding why they made the YouTube experience so bad on Android TV. They own YouTube, they own Android TV, do they hate YouTube? Do they hate Android TV? Do they just hate me?

The ways it behaves are bizarre. Today, I put some music on on YouTube, since I pay for Premium and it (should) play music without interruption. Except it waits a while, maybe an hour, then needily demands that I pull my hands out of the dishwater, dry them off, walk into the other room, grab the remote and click a button to indicate that I don't want it to stop playing the music I told it to play. I'm glad I'm not in a relationship with it, because if I was I would dump it for being so clingy!

After finishing up the dishes and tidying up the kitchen, I decided to sit down and surf some Reddit, still listening to music on YouTube on the TV. Saw some interesting looking posts on news about the protests, went to go look at one of them, and it plays for a tiny amount, before stopping the muted video I just clicked AND stopping the music on the TV, apparently because I may not watch one thing and listen to another thing at the same time. WTF? When did Google become the attention police?

So, OK, guess they really don't want me listening to music today. So I stop the music and decide to do a search on YouTube on my Android TV, looking for live streams of the protests. Should be no big deal, right, there's tons of that going on in this very minute. Nope. There's a live stream from KTLA, KGW, NBC and Bloomberg...and that's it. Oh wait, there's live streams of 24/7 news channels in Australia and somewhere in the Middle East. Meanwhile, going to YouTube on my laptop and there's more live streams than I can even count. After scrolling right on the TV for a long long time (and going past those same few channel streams repeated repeatedly), I can find some archived live streams from like a week ago....yes, that's exactly what I wanted when I searched "live streams", streams from a week ago, thanks Google!

Why do I pay for this again, and what is it even good for?
