Viability of installing stock android on Galaxy A5

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:48 AM PDT

how hard would it be to root and install stock android on my Samsung Galaxy A5 2017. it's currently running android 9, but its the samsung version, which I don't like, since I already use all the google apps anyway, I don't like having the Samsung ones as well... I do have access to a Linux computer, I'm guessing that is required?

edit: would I be able to install Android 10?

Can I run a Restore from Google Cloud after I'm done with the setup wizard?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:41 AM PDT

    Howdy,

I was having a problem with my phone so I did a hard reset and chose to NOT restore my data from the Google Backup. I was able to get the phone working and now I want to do the restore so it puts all my apps and things back on automatically so I can see if everything keeps working. Is there any way to do this? I'm not finding a manual restore option in the menu or any way to rerun the initial setup wizard.

    This is on Android 9.

    Thanks.

Questions about the refund policy on google play.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:56 AM PDT

First, what happens when you get a refund? Does it go back to where it originally was, like if the purchase was made with a credit card, the money will go back into your bank, or does it become google play credit? I want to know because I currently have to use digital prepaid visas and I don't really know how they work. I have made purchases with them but I've never had to get a refund when using them.

Second, do they allow mass refunds and do they allow refunds if you refund almost every game you buy? I'm the kind of person that will download what ever google play recommends me but most of the games they recommend either don't work on my devices or they do but they aren't fun. I was worried that if I buy like 20 games in one day but get refunds for either all or most of them, they would eventually deny my refund requests. I had a similar like this with steam because they kept recommending me games that, even though they had mostly positive reviews, I thought they were bad and they started denying my refund requests.

Link an app to a system control

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:39 AM PDT

I'm on a Pixel XL and I was wondering if there is a way to make opening a certain app mute my media volume. This phone has a very loud speaker and I don't want to mistakenly play my music or audio book that I listen to in my work van when I'm with a customer. I have a time clock app that I open every morning that I would like to have it mute media volume when I open and run it.

    Navigation audio

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:34 AM PDT

Hey guys, I have a samsung galaxy a20 and I have a question about maps. I like listening to books on tape in the car via overdrive, but whenever google gives directions the book keeps being read. I've missed some important parts due to this. Obviously, I can get context clues but it's a pain in the ass. Can someone explain how to get overdrive or spotify to pause when google maps shouts out directions. (I don't like watching my phone in the car). Bonus points if you can tell me how to do it with my nissan rogue navigation as well.

Question about Do Not Disturb on Samsung Galaxy S8 (Verizon)

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:47 AM PDT

I have Do Not Disturb set up for 10PM-8AM every day, with exceptions for calls and messages from my favorite contacts list. I leave my phone on vibrate every night. If I get a call during the Do Not Disturb window from a non-favorite contact, it doesn't vibrate or light up. However, if I get a text from a non-favorite contact during the window, the phone does vibrate. Am I missing something with the settings? I'm confused and it annoys me that my boss texts in the middle of the night and it wakes me up, despite him definitely not being one of my favorite contacts.

Annoying sound limiter on android builds after november 2018

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:45 AM PDT

ive used a galaxy s4 only as an mp3 player for the past 5 years. been very satisfied with dsp manager (from cyanogenmod kitkat ported to android 5, 6, 7 and later 8 and 8.1) and later jamesdsp on early android 9 builds. after i flashed a custom rom based on november pie release i noticed bass was weaker than before and if i tried to increase volume over 50% (it has insane volume since i firstly got it the max volume without destroying the headset was at 50%, if i attached a speaker to the 3.5mm jack it didnt have distortion at 100% and it would be loud somehow) whenever bass kicked in the volume would drop significantly. i grabbed a multimeter (probably not the right tool but i dont have pro tools for this) just out of curiosity and measured a peak voltage of 200mV t 50%. even though i tried to increase the volume it wouldnt increase the peak voltage. flashed back to the previous pie release and tried the same thing. i got 250mV peak at 50% volume. i tried this with bass cranked to the max. how can i get rid of this software limiter (im not that good at android modding)? i cant stay on the earlier pie build on my s4 bc its very buggy and slower than android q builds. ive noticed this on my galaxy s7 and s9 too.

    sorry for the long post

Not all apps can see all files

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:41 AM PDT

    Hello!

I recently got an Xperia 5 (Model J9210, Android 10, Build 55.1.A.3.149) and there is an odd behavior when it comes to (not) seeing files and some apps. There have been two instances, which may not be related, but I'm covering them both:

The first time I noticed this was when I copied a backup from my old phone to the PC, and then from the PC to the Xperia 5. Via the PC i created a folder called backup in the root on the Xperia, and placed the files in there. When I tried to view the files via the standard File manger (Google's), there was no such folder to be seen, nor was the file in the folder listed as a recent file. I connected the phone to the PC again and verified that the the folder was there. I installed a third party File manager: Simple File Manager Pro. It found the folder and the file right away. Back to the Google file manger: no folder, no file. A few days later, Google File manager now see the folder and the file.

The second time I cropped a photo in Simple Gallery Pro and wanted to post it on Twitter. But Twitter could not see the photo as a recent file, only the original photo taken by my camera. Google file manager could not see the photo either. Simple File Manager Pro saw the photo just fine (it's in DCIM/100ANDRO jut like all the other photos). I did the edit again, and this time both Twitter and Google File manager found the image. A couple of days later I edited another photo to post on Twitter, same result with it not being found. Tried the "do it again" trick, but no luck, not seen in Goole File manager nor Twitter recent files. I am able to add the photo to Twitter via the Simple File Manager just fine btw.

So, how is it that files that are clearly there is not found by some programs? I know that Simple Contacts for instance place contacts in a protected file that no other program can reach, but this is not the case neither with copying files from the PC nor cropping an image and saving it the same place where the original resides.

Galaxy S20 SD card write speeds

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:25 AM PDT

For the purpose of recording videos on the the galaxy s20 it seems that it would be better to write the files to the internal memory instead of the SD card. From what I can read the internal write speeds are much better than say a sandisk extreme pro. Are there any opinions out there from people more knowledgeable than myself?

Agm A8 rugged phone loaded with spyware

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:59 AM PDT

Hi guy's I'm a tech savvy guy in my 30's and iv been around technology for years built pc's, wired cars ect but I'm not all that interested in phones they are just a basic tool for me and my work, anyway I needed a rugged phone for my work so I picked up a Agm A8 and straight out the box's its done the weirdest thing,

So I set it up and downloaded the updates before I did anything and I left the phone for 4 hours or so and when I opened the lock screen it was full of pop up adds for shitty mobile apps and games, I literally didn't install anything besides andriod updates so I got busy deleting these apps then I installed a basic antivirus ( avg ) but these adds just kept coming , so I gave up and did a factory reset and this time I didn't touch anything and after a few hours I had a bunch more shitty apps installing themselves on it. Since then I have tried two more times but it keeps happening no matter what I do, and if I leave the phone for 2 days its so full up with bullshit apps that Its barely functional. I'm thinking I got a dodgy Chinese seller and it has some hacked version of andriod and I need to some how load a legit version onto it. anyone herd of this happening before? or know a better fix?

How to improve my Verizon s9 battery life?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:11 AM PDT

I posted a link with screenshots of my horrible battery life. I've had this phone for about 2 years and a month. It seems like no matter what I do I have to charge my phone at least 3 times a day and I'm really frustrated about that. There is no reason my phone should be at 44% at 11:08 when I unplugged it a little bit after 7 this morning. I am frustrated with my horrible battery life and wish I could get a new phone right. Please let me know if there is anything that can be done to improve my horrible battery life as I sick and tired of having to change it several times a day. http://imgur.com/gallery/TXwFc4i

How can I back up my text messages (SMS) and phone call logs to my Gmail account?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:07 AM PDT

I've been using an app called SMS Backup+ for the last 9 years but today I got this email from Google telling me they're going to revoke it's access to my Gmail account:

Hello, Beginning July 8, 2020, the following app will no longer have access to your Gmail data:

    SMS Backup+

Google has always worked to design our tools and services with security at their core. Last year, we proactively updated the Google User Data Policy to better protect Gmail users.

All apps listed above have not passed our required verification process and, as a result, will no longer be able to access your Gmail data starting July 8, 2020.

Without access to your Gmail data, this app may not work as intended. If you have any questions, please contact the developer of the app.

You can also use the Security Checkup tool to view, manage, and remove any apps that you have given access to your Google Account.

    Thanks, The Google Accounts team

This is the only app I know of that can back up all my text messages (incluidng images) and phone call logs to my gmail account. This is extremely useful since I can now search Gmail to find text messages, cross-reference it with date and contacts, etc.

Does anybody know of another way or app that does this?

    Thanks.
