The Potential of Android 11's Bubbles

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 05:21 PM PDT

Does something like this open the door for dragging and dropping?

Ex: In Google Photos, click a picture, drag it to the messages bubble, and it drops there, ready to send.

Feels like it has potential to be great for multitasking, but current apps would probably need to be reworked. to support dragging.

Or is DnD something way too difficult to implement?

EDIT - Found this old article talking about Google patenting drag and drop.

    http://www.whatafuture.com/google-drag-drop-feature-android/

Not sure if they've implemented drag and drop in Android since then? Maybe only with split screen (I've never used it so idk if its there)

With Google adding more obstacles to rooted phones, what changes do you wish Google would make to help rooted-phone users to fallback to non-root?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 09:21 PM PDT

I always root my phones ever since I own a rootable phone (probably HTC M7, or earlier). It'd be difficult for me to move back to non-root, but I think I need to prepare for this day sooner or later.

The necessity of root decrease over time. For instance, performance/battery improvement gained from rooting (greenify, amplify etc.) is not as big as it used to be. We don't need root for dark themes (substratum). Tasker development has been amazing and we don't need root for many "root" actions now. There are decent no-root options for adblock (adaway) and firewall (afwall).

The 3 things that I hope Google can implement before they take away my ability to root (which they shouldn't to begin with) are:

    • Reliable way to backup my app data (titanium backup). I want to backup anytime, and restore my app/game to the previous state reliably, no matter it's in my current phone, with or without reset, or in my new phone /another device.

    • Assurance that I won't lose my apps (especially paid ones) because the developer or Play Store remove the app from the Store. They should notify the paid users about the removal of the apps and amend the policy to allow users to download the apk if the app disappeared permanently (or for a prolonged period).

    • Ability to disable installed apps. I don't want to uninstall/re-download the seldom used apps every time I need them, but I also don't want to suspect these apps doing things (shady or not) in the background.

There are other things that i'd miss, but I can live with:

    • Ability to customize the screen color/brightness like CF.lumen, Darker or Lux. However, I guess I can live with less aesthetic overlays like in Twilight though. CF.lumen, Darker & Lux are all not being maintained anyway.

    • Ability to remotely control lost phone (Cerberus). I understand this actually could be a big security risk, and Cerberus is not cheap now, so I can live with using Find Your Device.

    • Ability to modify apps (disable receivers, services, trackers, etc.) At least I can now use ExodusPrivacy/ClassyShark3xodus to detect trackers, and impact could be minimized by firewall, adblock, etc.

I might have missed some other things, but those are probably more on convenience then necessity. I don't think this sub is high on rooting, but what are the things you wish you can have on your non-root phones?

I watched my Oneplus 7T back glass crack in my hand.

I saw a couple of posts just like this and dismissed them as people lying about abusing their phones or something... but it happened to me, so I'm throwing in my data point.

I took my oneplus 7T out of it's case on a whim while I was outside. I literally watched as the back glass cracked spontaneously from the power button outward as I was holding it. It was pretty cold outside, about 30F - I imagine that it was the temperature change from my pocket to the outside that made it happen. There is not a single nick on the device otherwise but oneplus is refusing warranty service ("physical damage is not covered, please understand"). Pretty unhappy with this situation, this'll be the last oneplus device I buy - these are no longer cheap phones and they should not carry the expectation that customer service will be a compromise.

Possible solution to the new SafetyNet TEE regime

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 05:49 PM PDT

So things are pretty wild right now, and I thought I could give you some help!

All you have to do is download the "MagiskHide Props Config" Magisk Module and enable it. Then, follow the instructions in the documentation to set your device prop/ID to one that doesn't have a TEE. Done! SafetyNet will now think you don't have a TEE and disable the hardware-based attestation, thus letting Magisk do its thing.

Android Messages for Web not staying connected with screen off? Possible solution:

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 04:14 PM PDT

Common issue that keeps coming up - Android Messages for Web not staying connected to a PC client. Works fine on my home network, not at work.

So, I brought an old router from home and hooked it up to the office modem, and the connection is much more stable. The router I was using at the office was a gateway (att fiber modem / wifi combo Arris bgw210). Now I am running it in bridge mode with ip passthrough to an old netgear router (meaning I disabled the gateways radios and all firewall / nat functions are now handled by the netgear).

I suspect the problem is a firewall rule in the att gateway, but have no idea why waking up the screen on the android device (sometimes having to open the messaging app as well) would fix the connection. Switching routing functions to another device has fixed it for me.

[DEV] Edge Launcher 3x Beta demo - major refresh, welcome your feedback!

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 09:56 AM PDT

    Hello r/Android!

For the past 9 months I have been working on a major update to my old app Edge Launcher and I'm finally at a stage where I have the core functionality in place. I wanted to share a quick demo and get your thoughts on how it looks. Would you be interested in using it?

The main idea behind the launcher is easy one hand use and quick access to the most used features on the phone. Everything can be accessed with one touch without lifting your finger (there is also a conventional swipe to open mode). You will see the functionality from the recording below. You can set your own favorite apps, contacts and quick settings. I'm currently working on adding customization options such as colors and custom icons/theming.

This has been a pet project for a long time and it helped me learn Android development. The previous version was pretty popular (+150,000 downloads, even got covered by Androd Police at one time, hightlight of my "developer career" :)).

This is still work in progress, so obviously a beta version. All thoughts and constructive criticisms are welcome. Thank you!

PS: The icon is also fresh.

[Root] Messenger Beta adds built in app lock feature using Biometrics API

    Posted: 10 Mar 2020 09:23 PM PDT

    Screenshots

    • No matter what option you choose, you will be asked for credentials upon leaving the app.
    • It shows FaceID for me even if did not enable it (I also just have a Redmi Note 7 running Pixel Experience, no FaceID)
    • Currently, you won't be able to open chat heads; tapping on it asks for credentials and then opens the whole app. Chat heads can still appear and notify for messages.
    • This is the first time the gatekeeper worked so the issues may be fixed in the future.
    1. Enter a terminal with root permissions:

      su

    2. Enter this command:

      am start -n "com.facebook.orca/com.facebook.abtest.gkprefs.GkSettingsListActivity"

    3. Find the following and enable it:

      messenger_privacy_screen_lock_android

    4. Restart the app by removing it from the recents screen or force stopping it.
