3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 138)

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:54 AM PST

Welcome back, fellow mobile gamers, to my weekly summary of mobile gaming recommendations based on the best games I played last week. Hope you'll enjoy :)

This week, I cover the most ambitious mobile game I've played, featuring in-air combat in a 4v4 PvP setting, a turn-based retro Beat 'Em Up fighting game, and a new Overwatch-like tactical shooter by Madfinger Games.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 138 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Here are the games:

Kick-Flight [Game Size: 726 MB] (free)

Genre: PvP / Action / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Kick-Flight is a unique 4v4 real-time PvP action game with mid-air combat (Dragon Ball-style), and it's by far the most ambitious mobile game I've played till date.

The most surprising part is that it actually works. The control are solid, the graphics and animations are high-quality, combat FEELS fantastic, and the gameplay is original.

In the normal game mode, we fight to collect as many orbs as possible and deliver them to our base, while taking out our opponents to prevent them from collecting too many orbs. All of this happens in-air.

Progression happens through unlocking new heroes, called Kickers, and new abilities, called Discs. Heroes are easily obtainable for free and all have vastly different stats and attributes, and while discs unlock from loot-chests and a gacha-like system, they're relatively easily obtainable as well.

Monetization happens through a $3-per-month subscription that adds a bit of extra convenience, and through the sale of premium currency, which allows us to unlock new Discs faster.

So far, the game seems very free-to-play friendly, and the gameplay is some of the most fun I've tried in a while - with plenty of depth and strategy if you really want to dive deep.

PPKP [Game Size: 156 MB] (free)

Genre: Turn-based / Fighting / RPG / Beat 'Em Up / Retro - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

PPKP is a turn-based Beat 'Em Up retro RPG fighting game where we kick and punch our way through endless waves of enemies in each city, while blocking at just the right time to counter-attack the opponents.

With gold and scrap parts, we slowly level up our character and repair the various houses in each city, which enables shops and NPCs like the Dojo, where we can pay gold to learn new attack combos.

Once we're done with one city, we move on to the next one, and repeat the cycle, while continuously growing stronger and unlocking new equipment.

The game monetizes through ads shown when we die, and a fuel energy system, which limits us to about ~30 minutes of play-time per session. Still worth playing because of the solid gameplay.

Shadowgun War Games [Total Game Size: 546 MB] (free)

    Genre: Shooter / Third-person / Overwatch-like / Tactical - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Shadowgun War Games is hero-based shooter, and it's essentially MADFINGER GAMES' attempt at creating an Overwatch game for Android and iOS devices.

The tactical gameplay does create a fun experience with different objectives in each game mode and unique heroes that each have a set of distinct weapons that can either deal damage or heal and shield allies.

The graphics and UI is decent as well, but unfortunately, the controls are a complete mess at this point. They need to be calibrated better, and we need more customization options in the settings before the game can truly excel.

Fortunately, the game monetizes purely through vanity cosmetics, which can be bought directly or unlocked through the Battle Pass subscription, which means the game is 100% fair and competitive.

Shattered Colony - Oh how I long for an android version of this old Flash game

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 04:36 AM PST

Every few years I get a hankering for this game. A simple concept executed very well, with a juicy risk/reward system and lots of replay value.

Has anyone come across something similar on Android?

    [Dev] SimpleMMO - A lightweight, text-based MMORPG

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 09:53 AM PST

Hello! I am the developer of SimpleMMO. It is a light-weight, text-based MMORPG that aims to be extremely simple and revive the old text-based MMORPG genre.

I've posted here before but the game has undergone a lot of changes since the last time and the feedback I received was incredibly helpful.

I've been a big fan of text-based MMORPG games since I was just a child playing the old classics like Torn, SoulRaider, BoringRPG, Boredest, Monocounty, Mafia Wars, PhantasyRPG etc but there has been a very noticeable decline in the simple text-based game genre and an increase in heavy, graphical games that are just completely unnecessary or the "idle" game genre. I looked everywhere on the store for a game that would scratch my "Text-based MMORPG" itch but there was nothing available. Everything was either P2W garbage with a heavy, clunky user interface or it was extremely outdated. I decided to take the task upon myself to create my own. At the start of 2018, I managed to come up with my creation and release it to the store.

2+ years later, the game has grown from a very small community of a handful of players, to a daily play rate of 1,000 players. The community is what really makes the game shine.

    Here are some features -

    • PV︎P
    • Travel across the world of SimpleMMO by the press of a single button.
    • A turn-based attack system.
    • Over 1,000+ pieces of loot on your adventures.
    • Over 100 quests and tasks.
    • Hundreds of enemies
    • A extremely friendly and helpful community.
    • Leaderboards
    • Guilds
    • World Bosses
    • Daily tasks and chests
    • And more!

Since the last post I made 4 months ago, there has also been lots of new changes in response to the feedback I received. I will list some of the changes now -

    • The game now has music when playing
    • Tons of bugs have been fixed that were highlighted by you and the community
    • To further balance the premium currency, there are more ways to obtain diamonds with normal gameplay by completing tasks and competing in the battle arena.
    • Gameplay is no longer stopped when you run out of steps while adventuring
    • There is now a starter tutorial
    • New players get a "starter chest" which gives them small boosts
    • The game is more dynamic and responsive

I want to be upfront about this and the game does include a monetization structure in the form of IAPs and advertisements. However I have done my best in trying to balance the p2p users and the f2p users by making most of the rewards cosmetic only (new avatars, gradient name changes, custom avatars, animated avatars, custom item sprites, item renames, etc) as well as providing more ways to obtain diamonds via regular gameplay (as explained above). The advertisements are as unobtrusive and as optional as they can be.

Oh also that the game currently has double EXP and double drop rates (meaning that you are twice as likely to receive a rarer item) enabled but it will be disabled in the next 3-4 hours so be quick if you want to take advantage!

If you want to check it out, you can view the Google Play page here -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dawsn.simplemmo&hl=en_GB

We also have our own subreddit so feel free to come and say hi r/SimpleMMO

If you download my game, I hope that you enjoy it and I am happy to hear any and all feedback regarding it.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:02 AM PST

[Request] Is ther a game out there similar to City of hero's or City of villians? I want to create my own hero/villain with custom powers. I would like it to be preferably payable.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 11:56 PM PST

    [request] non-Tower defense defense games.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 05:55 PM PST

I'm a big fan of games like defender and elona shooter. I also love TD but I've yet to find a gemcraft on mobile. So I'm looking for something like elona shooter.

    don't mind ads

    don't mind paying a bit.

    strongly prefer NO IAP

Strongly prefer meaningful play without constant tapping or holding touch.

Strongly prefer complexity. skills, skill tree etc.

Simple android game with good community where you can trade with others, dev updating mission or rewards weekly or daily?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 03:55 AM PST

Any genre will do, but specifically what i prefer is just like simple game, not like Arcane Legends, lr any heavy games.

The game i'm referencing is actually PACYBITS FUT 20, any game similar to that (doesn't have to be Sports).

Need controller for Galaxy Note 10+

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:02 AM PST

So I'm a heavy gamer and I'm looking for a controller that would easily work woth Dolphin and PS4 Remote Play. I tried this one by BEBONCOOL (I think? Or one like it by the same company) BUT it was just awful.

    https://www.amazon.co.jp/専用コントローラー-Bluetooth接続-BEBONCOOL-高速射撃ボタン伸縮式-モバイルコントローラー/dp/B07SSNKPW8/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?_encoding=UTF8&imageClass=hi-res&keywords=beboncool&phoneCarrier=wifi&phoneType=Android&qid=1582466275&rd=1&sr=8-8&view=Touch9

Any advice for a good controller similar to this type but that actually works? Sorry for bothering all of you.

[REQUEST] A twin-stick spaceship MMO shooter?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 09:55 AM PST

Hugely enjoyed Pocket Starships and didn't even mind the grind but the lack of end game content and variation in gameplay bored me eventually. That and to log in across multiple devices you needed to use Facebook, which believe it or not, I don't use and I ended up getting completely locked out, with their support team being useless in fixing.

So any suggestions on a top-down spaceship shooter with MMO elements? Pocket Starships has loads of ships of different classes that you can grind towards and load out with new weapons giving it an RPG feel.

Searching for a game I used to play a few years ago

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 11:15 AM PST

It was a strategy-centered game with an ancient-china theme. One had to train armies of pikemen, archers, horsemen, and the like to battle with the enemies. The map consisted of swamps, forests, plains and plateaus. I remember there being mortars placed in high locations, too. The gameplay was 2D, with the player moving the troops around like free-range chess pieces. One could even set fire to the forests to deal damage to the enemies. Please help me find it, I can't sleep. Thanks.

War Tortoise 2 - an action/idle/incremental game involving a tortoise tank and rodent allies!

Looking for very specific kinds of games

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:34 AM PST

    Hi all!

I'm a pretty picky gamer and right now I'm craving 2 specific kinds of games:

#1 - An open-class / classless RPG where I can build my own character's class by selecting its stats, skills, and equipment. Strongly prefer for it to be fantasy or dark fantasy.

So say I want to build a paladin, I'll pick Vitality, Strength, and Faith stats. Give him some tanking and healing skills. Equip him with some heavy armor.

Doesn't matter if it's idle but prefer that I have to fully control the character.

    ---

#2 - Colony builder where you guide your colony where they struggle in a world where they are pretty much at the bottom of the food-chain. So something bleak and grim, perhaps dark fantasy setting? You develop both your colony (tech tree, culture, population) and colonists (stats and equipment, maybe family too).

    ---

I realize these are quite specific and the games may not exist but I'd like to see what else is out there.

The Playstore is full of the same game with different skins, and scrolling through them without knowing the exact name of the game you want renders finding new good ones impossible.

Post may become off-topic, but maybe we can extend this to PC games?

    Thanks!

game where you fight bosses with bombs and can slow down time

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:41 AM PST

Just remembered a super fun game I played a few years ago, but I can't remember what it was called.

Game is as described in title. I think it worked kinda like superhot where time slows when your finger is off the d-pad. Bombs were the primary weapons if not the only weapons. Had a level system where each level is a boss. Also the story had something to do with a factory iirc, with the game's intro having to do with the mc approaching the factory. Does anyone remember this?
