Snapdrop is a Free, Open Source, Cross Platform, Browser Based AirDrop Like File Sharing App that Works on Android

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 07:42 PM PST

I see many people here want an AirDrop like app for Android. So I am sharing a relatively unknown web app called "Snapdrop".

You have to open https://snapdrop.net/ url in a Chrome or Firefox browser on any two devices to share files locally between them. Files are not uploaded to the cloud.

    Repo: https://github.com/RobinLinus/snapdrop

I am not affiliated with Snapdrop in any way.

Oppo Realme X50 5G: I would love to see more phones with side-mounted fingerprint sensors

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 04:57 AM PST

Just seems more convenient in my opinion, at least for now. Saw this chinese phone for $420 and was wondering why is everyone going all-in with under-display fingerprint scanners that might not be fully optimized.

Also this phone is great in general, especially for the price. You get 120hz, Snapdragon 765, 8GB of RAM and 5G connectivity

Used a pixel 3a xl for a month... and its really great!

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 08:31 AM PST

Needed a second phone for international travel purposes (Sure would be nice if US phones had dual sim...) and grabbed a open box 3a xl for about $280 at best buy... and from my month of using it, its way better than I expected. Haven't had a 'stock' android phone since the 2 xl, and this experience is definitely better than that in some ways, so I'll just list some of my thoughts.

    • Build is solid. Relatively light weight compare to most phone's I've had recently being near 200g. Definitely has a plasticiky texture, but it doesn't really matter once you slap on a case.
    • Screen is great. 1080p flat oled panel without any noticeable color shifting is about all one could ask for. I believe it is also widevine lvl1 so you can do HD streaming services which isn't always the case for china phones at this price range. Also hey its been a while since we have a google phone with the screen being relatively centered in terms of bezel size (bottom is slightly bigger).
    • The speakers aren't bad either. Has a pseudo stereo setup too which works fine for me when watching youtube at home.

    • Hey a rear fingerprint sensor! So quick, so easy to access! Really is night and day coming from the awful ultrasonic sensor on my note 10+. It also works with everything unlike the pixel 4 face thing.

    • Headphone jack! Haven't really found a use for it these days outside of a rental car that had an aux port. Having more options is always better than less.

    • Battery life was decent. Not as ultra amazing as i'd hope, but still above average for a google phone these days. Standby time is ridiculous as well, coming from a samsung that can lose between 5-20% of battery overnight on a whim. USB-PD charging is reasonably fast though. Can't really think of many phones that can just fast charge on all my pd stuff around the house, but maybe that's different now? I'm not too familiar if motorolas or xiaomi/huawei/etc midrange phones support the standard or just use quickcharge or their own proprietary stuff.

    • Performance is honestly the biggest surprise. I remember my pixel 2 xl having absolutely horrible memory management on oreo and pie, but this is much better for normal apps. Had less drop animation than my note 10+ for what that's worth. Load times are noticeably longer, but only by a second or 2 for normal apps... and it is less of a deal because they stay in memory for the most part. Splitscreen works great too, when before I've had apps frequently reload on my 2xl. Games are obviously the weak point here in terms of load times and performance, especially if you play some ones that are... 2nd citizen to the ios version. But with many games with settings or fps caps... its not too bad. Obviously if gaming is a concern, you should be looking at chinese phones with sd 8XX processors at this price range. Otherwise for the most part this phone is about the same smoothness as the top phones out there.

    • Camera... a bit slow to boot but its definitely as good as google flagships in terms of pictures you can take. No other phone at this price range can do night shots as well as this.

    • The only real knock I have though... is storage options. 64gb without expandable memory is really tough these days, with ballooning app sizes. I was pretty much at 70% space used by the time I finished restoring my daily use apps (a fair amount of 1gb+ size games). I'm not entirely sure if i'd pay $100 for 128gb option... but I do think google needs to seriously rethink their memory options for their phones. usb 2.0 as well so don't expect amazing file transfer either. I assume for most people though, they'd be ok. Think my mom finally filled up her 64gb iphone 6s after 3 years.

So yeah in short... if you don't game a lot, get this phone (when it's at least $100 off). It really does everything else as well as it needs to be, coming from someone who been pretty much using flagships these days (note 10+,pixel 4xl, oneplus 7 pro) in terms of ui smoothness and camera performance. Wireless charging/water resistance/wide angle lense are nice, but is it a few hundred dollars premium nice? That's up to you and your wallet.
