Did Google Play just revise their ranking algorithm? Installs suddenly dropped as far as 67%

One of my apps did quite good over the past months in terms of install growth and generated revenue. During the past month I saw a 30% increase in downloads.

On 10th December I saw I slight decrease (about 10%) which appeared to be a normal fluctuation. As it turns out it was not because on 13th December my daily installs dropped by 67%. This also did happen two months ago but after one day the installs were almost back to normal and recovered since then. But this time it's different. The install drop persists for three days and I assume it won't just disappear.

My users mostly come from Germany, Italy, Mexico, Brazil and the U.S.

I checked the ranking change index for these countries on AppTweak. And there's indeed a significant anomaly between 10th and 13th December.

Ranking change in the U.S. (AppTweak)

I'm glad that my income is largely not only dependant on Google Play because it was cut in half because of the install drop. I'd be probably starving now.

Did any of you experience a similar phenome? And does any of you have advice of what I should do in order to get my daily installs back to normal.

Can we have a UI showcase thread?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:54 AM PST

So over in r/webdev they have a showcase thread every week which got me wondering if we could have something like that too. I have noticed a few threads here asking about how to replicate some custom UI stuff (views, complex animations) from some design mockups and since some devs might be weak in these areas (me!), it would be a nice way to learn how to do them properly. I understand most people might not get the time so maybe we do it only once a month or so. What do you think?

Dealing with bad reviews on the Play Store

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 06:42 AM PST

I have an application on the Play Store with about 3000 active users and an average score of 4.2. This application uses the accessibility service and I have set up a privacy policy that stipulates that I do not collect personal data. I even mention that my application does not have access to the Internet and therefore could not do anything with this data.

Here's my problem: a user gave me a one-star rating and claims that my application is made to steal credit card numbers. It seems obvious that he is ignorant and has not understood the system alert message that appears when the accessibility service is activated.
I replied by telling him that he was completely wrong, but he persists and says that Google must be notified.

I hesitate to report the review to Google because it is objectively malicious and comes from a user who doesn't understand anything but I'm afraid it will be misinterpreted and will only make the problem worse.

Do you have any advice on what to do in these cases?

Can I use bitly links in my app to track users?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 06:39 AM PST

I googled everywhere and found no answer.

Can I use bitly links in my app and if someone clicks on my link it will redirect users to my website or social media and track what browser and what country they're from?

Or that is something we are not allowed to do?

[Realm] Extending an object extending RealmObject gives compilation error.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:54 AM PST

Ok, I have class called BookData which exends RealmObject, and class Chapter which extends class A. I'm getting the following compilation error:

error: Valid model classes must either extend RealmObject or implement RealmModel.

I'm stumped as to why this is happening, since through inheritance this should work.

App updated rejected due to Violation of Families Policy? But I didn't update the app.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:49 AM PST

I have a few apps that have few downloads. Since the developer Google account is different from my personal Google account, I only read the e-mails to my developer account from time to time. I just checked the developer e-mails and found this e-mail below from about two months ago.

My question is, was that "review" done by a human? Or was it some kind of automated A.I. nonsense? I don't think I updated the app, and I don't remember whether I updated some of the meta data such as rating due to those warnings that told me to re-apply ratings or whatnot for their new family rule or something, which seemed useless because my app had no NSWF content whatsoever.

I checked the "rejected" app's description, and the length was about a thousand characters. That isn't excessive, is it? Since the app is completely free without any monetisation and mainly created for my own use (but uploaded to the Play Store to help others), I kind of wrote the description a little bit personally. But I can't think of anything "misleading", "irrelevant", or "excessive". The problem of the e-mail below is that it is not telling me what exactly is wrong... The only thing that MIGHT be irrelevant is that in the last part of the description, I had written that I might add more features in the future if this app becomes popular. But can that really be a reason for which an app can be removed from the Store? I could remove that sentence and try re-submitting the description, but then if that was not the "policy-violating" part, I could get another strikes for deception or something. I had such an experience before. I thought the description was the reason of rejection so I edited the description and resubmitted it, but I got a "Deception" policy strike instead, because it was the app's name for which it was rejected in the first place. I eventually got re-instatated after contacting Google's support, though.

    Publishing status: Rejected

After review, your app has been rejected and wasn't published due to a policy violation. If you submitted an update, the previous version of your app is still available on Google Play. However, the previous version of your app may be subject to removal if you do not resolve the issue outlined below.

Issue: Violation of Families Policy Requirements

Apps that contain elements that appeal to children must comply with all Families Policy Requirements. We found the following issue(s) with your app:

    Version(s) APK:1

    Eligibility Issue Metadata

We don't allow apps with misleading, irrelevant, excessive, or inappropriate metadata, including but not limited to the app's description, developer name, title, icon, screenshots, and promotional images. Your app must include metadata text and images that accurately reflect the app experience.

    Someone stole my app

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:31 AM PST

I have an app published on Play Store for a little more than year now.

A couple of months ago, I received a warning in my AdMob dashboard stating:

Ad serving is disabled in one or more of your apps because of a policy violation.

I went to see in Policy Center and it's NOT my app, basically someone downloaded the apk of my app, changed the package name and re-uploaded it to his Play Store account, while it [the app] still had MY admob ids in it.

I tried to find a way to contact Google about it, but all I could find is "How to appeal", I don't want to do that as the app is not mine. So i did nothing.

His account was deleted, and the warning disappeared after a day or two. but it keeps reappearing (Supposedly because his app still has a few users and still generates Admob requests) every once in while (Like every 2-3 weeks).

How can I contact Google and clarify the situation ?

This is my revenue for the past 3 months using only Admob interstitial ads only

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 09:45 AM PST

    App #1:

Month Active installs Daily active Daily new users Monthly active Daily impressions Daily clicks
    Nov. 37007 6887 690 38784 38669 4408
    Oct. 32490 5937 747 30814 31867 3449
    Sept. 25576 4416 416 24525 23284 2462

    App #2:

Month Active installs Daily active Daily new users Monthly active Daily impressions Daily clicks
    Nov. 68885 6145 569 44001 16653 688
    Oct. 66310 5865 574 42601 14697 564
    Sept. 63824 5477 545 41759 13001 483

    Revenue and impressions:

Month Impressions Revenue Clicks Impression RPM
    Nov. 1,835,126 $3105 110,076 $1.69
    Oct. 1,632,876 $2479 96,390 $1.52
    Sept. 1,268,072 $1689 68,789 $1.33

    - Currently now (in December) I'm having nearly the same impressions as in the previous month (november) but with a lower Impression RPM: $1.57. So the revenues probably will be less than in the past month.

    - The active installs are from Google Play, the other stats are from fabric/firebase and it's being calculated by the average of the total sum in the past 30 days.

    - The traffic (aprox. 98%) are coming from eastern/central european countries.

    - The interstitial ads are being set between game levels.

    - No meditation are being used (and I really don't know what is it)

    - No marketing/ads was invested. These are just pure organic installs.

    - The apps are on the Google Play store for more than 1 year, but I've started monetizing the apps in the past 6 months (interstitial ads only. I hate banner ads, it's occupying 10% of the screen).

I'm posting this in hope that other people will share their app's info/stats. And I would like to know what experience did you have using admob. I've read somewhere that other people are using different ad providers (admob, vungle and others...) but I really don't understand, why? What's the next step? What should I do from here?

Is it okay to post our discord support link within the playstore description of our games ?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:26 PM PST

So i heard from someone it is a good idea to post discord links in the game description to facilitate easier communication with our players and i can get feedback to improve and update my game clearly. I think it is a great idea, but i just want to make sure it is 100% safe within googles terms and conditions. Is putting up discord links a common thing among other developers ? and is it safe for me add it in my game description ?

    Thanks

What is some creative way to build a basic support ticket system app?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:02 AM PST

I'm looking to test an app idea and looking for an open-source app which I can use the code, or source code for sale that simply a user will create an account, then create a new ticket, then I answer it, then the user can comment on my comment then I comment on their comment haha and so on. A user is able to create many tickets and each ticket will have a different number.

The app idea is simply I answer my online students' questions thought an app. Any open-source code I can modify and use for this task? I don't code but I will find someone who can help to modify it.

Is the solution I'm looking for is right for the task I need? It seems that I need some sort of support ticket source code so I can use it, modify it then share it with my students on Google Play.

I will have around 20-30 new tickets every day by users. The ticket will most likely be text-based, but the ability to attach a photo would be great.

If I can't find some open source, on average, how much I'm expecting to pay to have something like this done?

Why does Android Studio keep installing multiple SDK build tools without asking?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:39 AM PST

Why does Android Studio keep installing multiple SDK build tools without asking?

In the past it always asked me if it's ok to install. Now it keeps installing those without asking:

    https://preview.redd.it/9p5apumeer441.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=baa65ec7e33b0fb2cda0a9b1bff81a31c516ecc2

Each time I remove the old ones, they come back later, probably when I open some "old" projects from some Github repositories.

I don't even get why it needs those. It should have an option to always use just a single one (the latest), just like any other normal component...

How does the Play store and Chrome cause launchers to create a shortcut upon install of APK files?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 02:05 PM PST

I've noticed that this occurs only if we install from those apps, but not if we install from other third party app.

    How do they do it?

Play Store isn't open sourced, but maybe it's on the source code of Chrome?

In the past, apps could broadcast an Intent to create a shortcut, but now app can only use pinned shortcuts API, which would ask the user to confirm creation of the shortcut. However here it's done automatically, but only if the apps were installed from Chrome or the Play Store. Is there maybe some flag to add to the Intent of installing apps?

How is Awareness API not a laughing stock?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:36 AM PST

Smart phones are packed with sensors yet on a OS level they are as context aware as a brick. So Google's solution to the problem is to create an API that requires an internet connection to broadcast an intent when users plug in their headphones?

I understand that data mining people down to every second of their life is Google's business model but it blows my mind how gate keeping functionality that should have been OS native 10 years ago gets a pass from anyone.

Inb4 "Just use android.intent.action.HEADSET_PLUG intent filter" lol.

Splash Screen Until Activity Loaded Android Studio

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 07:30 PM PST

Title sort of explains it. Not exactly sure how to have a splash screen that waits until another activity is done loading before it disappears, or even how to have an activity load while another activity is running for that matter, because it seems like everything is sort of "onCreate" in Android. I've experimented with postDelayed, but that seems to require some sort of set time, whereas the time I would want to have the splash screen up would be 1 second + however long the activity takes to load, so the time of the splash screen would vary by device. I figure this must be possible because I've seen it many times in apps.

    Bugs in Android Studio 3.5.2

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 02:34 PM PST

Did anyone experiences sth similar to that: use android studio, everything seems to be working fine then after being in editor of layout and hitting ctrl+alt+L (autoformat code) IDE suddenly is frozen. I have to manually kill the process to be able to launch another instance of IDE, then the best part: any changes done to project are literally gone. Like not that I want to, but I am able to reproduce it 100% of the times when I accidently hit autoformat code when editing some layouts. Very strange, if someone else had the same problem please share your thoughts and maybe some hack to solve it ;)
    Thanks in advance.
