Update to Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL battery life survey Posted: 19 Nov 2019 08:32 PM PST Earlier this week, I posted the results of an initial survey about the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL battery life. Comparing self reported screen on time (SOT) with the previous device owned before upgrading, alongside satisfaction data. Here is the survey results in summary on Google Forms. I've now completed collecting data. In summary, I'm glad I bought the Pixel 4 XL. Here is a link to the raw data if anyone cares to look. In summary for Pixel 4 (non XL) (n 38)
Pixel 4 XL (n 94)
General observations:
Ok you ungrateful SOB's I'm done. [link] [comments]
Google call screening confuses people Posted: 19 Nov 2019 05:43 PM PST First off let me say that I love the thought behind the call screening service. I have been using it since the day it was released. With the number of spam and robo calls I get a day it was nice to be able to quickly screen the calls. 99% of the calls as soon as the person or system hears it they hang up. I can honestly say that the service has saved me time. Although some days I miss messing with the scam callers. The problem I am running into though to this day though is the real people calling me are confused by the system. They start leaving a message and then hang up before you have a chance to connect the call. So now you have to call the person right back. It appears that people are thinking this is a voice mail service more than a screening service. It could be that people don't understand what a screening service is? Is this something that Google needs to tweak in their system and by tweaking their system I mean tweaking the prompts that the people hear? We know you cannot fix people and you would think the current prompt is very clear but it is obviously not working as I have had zero people actual state who they are, why they are calling, and actually wait for the call to connect. I would be interested in seeing how well this service is actually working. How well has it worked for you? [link] [comments]
TinyNotif: Bringing back the ticker (mostly) Posted: 19 Nov 2019 08:25 PM PST So I've been looking for something to disable heads up notifications and bring back the old-style notification ticker. I found a few posts around, like HeadsOff, Ticklr, and Ticker! Notification text beta, however these seem to have either gone missing or just not work as intended on newer versions of Android. So I decided to learn Android development and made a little app to bring 'em back... mostly ;P I say "mostly" because apps no longer have permission to draw overlays on top of the status bar, so I put a small overlay just below that when notifications appear. Just a heads up (pun not intended), disabling heads up popups on Android is a little irritating - Using adb ( GIF: https://i.imgur.com/GK7W2WX.gif Source code: https://gitlab.com/CraftedCart/tinynotif Download: https://gitlab.com/CraftedCart/tinynotif/-/tags (Requires Android 7 or newer) My apologies if this falls victim to rule #4 - I just figured some others may be looking for the old style notifications. Do you think Android TV will ever become the standard? Posted: 19 Nov 2019 05:35 PM PST It worked out very well for mobile phones to take a leaf from PC's pages and move to a standard OS third party OS (android), rather than each manufacture have their own shitty OS which goes out of date quickly and receives minimal ongoing support. Also would make it much easier for developers to maintain an app, when they don't have to create it for each manufacturer. Will we every see this for TVs? I know that the early versions of Android TV weren't well received, but I think that has been addressed. I think it's all pro's and barely any cons if TV software followed the same way of thinking as mobiles. [link] [comments]

Nice enhancement to Messages for Web Posted: 19 Nov 2019 05:24 AM PST I use multiple Chromebooks throughout the day (work, home, travel) and always had to reconnect Messages to whatever Chromebook I had in hand at the moment. Recently, I noticed that the Messages client remembers connections across multiple devices. Instead of forcing me to rescan the QR code to reconnect to a specific Chromebook, it now prompts with "Use Messages here?" so you can quickly switch to a new device. Nicely done, Google! Very helpful. [link] [comments] |
