Android TV Movie/TV show streaming app

Android TV Movie/TV show streaming app

    Movie/TV show streaming app

    Posted: 07 May 2022 03:08 PM PDT

Hello, is there any streaming android TV app that automatically plays the best version and no CAM version. I currently use cloudstream and it's good but when you press play most of the time it doesn't play the best version and I have to check other sources for a better one. I do have it set to 4k preferred quality but I still have to switch to a different source most of the time.

    Google TV guide question

    Posted: 07 May 2022 03:09 PM PDT

Does the guide on TVs with built-in Google TV integrate streaming (YouTube TV or Pluto etc) with OTA if you have an antenna attached? This would be for a senior citizen so wanting as simple as possible.

Possible update to home page recommendations?

    Posted: 07 May 2022 10:47 PM PDT

I don't have any 'legal' subscription services so normally the recommendations are pointless for me. However last night something really strange happened. I was watching TV on an IPTV app and suddenly the app crashed and home page restarted. To my surprise the app I watch movies and TV shows on were showing in my recommendations! I opened my IPTV back up and next time I went to the homepage it reverted back to normal. To be clear there was no local update to the app or GoogleTV and there is no possible way of adding this app to recommendations. The only thing I can think is that Google pushed a back-end update and quickly reverted it, or perhaps it was just a glitch but it seemed to work perfectly. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I use a Chromecast with GoogleTV latest update in the UK, and the app I use is MovieBox Pro. I wish I took a picture of it when it happened but I just assumed it was an update and would stay like that.

Verizon StreamTV blanking when used with a widescreen monitor: help?

    Posted: 07 May 2022 07:01 PM PDT

I just got a new V2 replacement for my V1 stream tv (which worked with this same setup). The V2 works fine with a normal TV, and it will flash its home screen up on the monitor (an LG with a built in soundbar) -- but then immediately freak out and stop sending a signal (the LED will go from white to red, signalling a connection problem). Again, the V1 worked on this monitor, and the V2 (its cables, etc.) work on other TVs.

While running it on the normal TV, I ran updates and enabled adb. Running adb logcat while going through the above, I get this:

    05-07 15:14:56.008 3352 3387 I SystemControl: [/DisplayMode.cpp, onTxEvent, 2917] onTxEvent switchName:hdmi_audio hpdstate:1 state: 1

I was initially worried that the 21:9 ratio of the screen was throwing this off, but setting res via adb seemed to (during a brief flash of the screen) set that and look "right", so now I'm worried it's some annoying HDMI/HDCP issue?

Any experience working through this with these or other android tv based devices with similar fun times? Thanks.

[Tip] How to get surround sound via stereo headphones on any android device or TV.

    Posted: 07 May 2022 07:31 AM PDT

Hi all, after switching from HTPC to Shield TV 2019 for Dolby Vision, the one thing i miss is Dolby Atmos for headphones support. This was easy done on PC via Dolby Access app and i loved it. So i set out to somehow solve this and here are my results.

    Stereo Headphone surround solution's:

    • Steelseries GameDac
      • outputs DTS Headphone X 2.0 via a AC3 5.1 spdif input stream (PS4 mode)
        • only AC3 is supported, so no DTS via spdif !
      • surround mode via USB only, only works on PC/Mac and in PC Mode
      • the X:2.0 version sounds good and is comparable to Dolby Atmos for headphones
        • has a wider soundstage, with a little more reverb, but still great for movies
      • can test on PC via DTS:X app
      • DAC has a HiFi mode/certificate aka 24bit/96khz (stereo only mode)
        • uses 16bit, 48khz in surround modes
      • only max. 80 ohm, realistically don't go higher then 50
        • i use 80-90% volume with Philips SHP9600 (32 ohm)
        • could not drive my 250 ohm Beyers
      • uses a custom 3.5mm adapter (included in box)

This is my current setup with a spdif splitter directly from my TV's spdif output, to drive my older AVR and the DAC. The main quirk is you need to make sure you get only AC3 5.1 output, since the DAC wont decode DTS... so either transcode on server (Plex/Jellyfin) or use Kodi, Vimu players to live transcode DTS->AC3.

    • Creative Sound Blaster X4
      • outputs "virtual 7.1" or "Super X-Fi" surround Holography
        • virtual is similar to what your AVR might offer in headphone mode
        • Super X-Fi is way different! It simulates a full surround speaker system.
        • The Super X-Fi mode is very convincing, but differs a lot from DTS/Dolby, it sounds like listening to a full speaker system in a room, so a lot of reverb and room acoustics.
        • I personally don't like the X-Fi mode and the normal "virtual 7.1" is not very convincing compared to DTS/Dolby.
      • can work via USB Surround from your device (if supported, works on Shield TV) or opt-in (coax only, hdmi->opt converter) from your TV/AVR
      • supports up-to 600 ohm headphones
        • can drive my 250 ohm Beyers DT990 at 30-50% volume
      • can do HiFi 24bit 96khz in all modes

Main issue on both is, they are quite expansive, if you only use them for TV/Movie surround. You can get wireless TV surround solution's for 200-400$, but those are all closed-back headphones, which i personally cant stand.

    Honorable mentions:

    • Xbox One
      • its windows based, so has the same Dolby/DTS apps
    • Apple TV via AirPods, AirPods Pro AirPods Max
      • has its own surround headphone solution (did not test)

    Cheaper Alternatives:

    • "virtual" headphone mode on your AVR
      • depends on the vendor, but i don't like mine via Marantz AVR
    • Creative Sound BlasterX G1
      • "virtual 7.1" via USB input (could not test)
    • Creative SXFI AMP
      • Super X-Fi via usb
    • Logitech Pro X Headset or G430/3, G230 (only the USB-DAC)
      • outputs DTS Headphone X via USB input (could not test)
      • you might be able to get only the USB-DAC cheap on ebay
    • some older Sennheiser/Sony, TV headphone surround system should also have a separate DAC that takes spdif and still has a physical headphone jack

PS: If you found other solutions please comment! I know there is a 1500$ headphone surround system with dolby atmos, but thats out of my budget.

Did Android TV Streamer destroys screen monitors?

    Posted: 07 May 2022 10:56 AM PDT

    Hey,

This is my first post here since this is the only place I think I can post my following issue:

I have an Android TV streamer device which is connected to a TV on the daily basis and works fine.

I connected it to my 4K Lenovo IPS screen (connected daily to my Mac), and watched fine.

After I connected back to the Mac, it all blurred, and the maximum resolution is Full HD.

For sake of comparison, I have dual monitors of the Lenovo, and the second one which I didn't connect to the streamer- works fine!

I did it few months ago with a Dell monitor, and it doesn't working anymore.

    What can cause the problem?

TCL 5 Series Google TV Crashing?

    Posted: 06 May 2022 07:34 PM PDT

I just bought an open box 5 series from Best Buy and it crashes and reboots itself extremely frequently, between every five to thirty minutes. I can't get through an episode of TV without at least one crash. Has anyone else experienced this?

Factory reset TCL TV that has no reset button?

    Posted: 06 May 2022 05:21 PM PDT

Hello! I'm embarrassed to have to ask for this but I am stumped. I have a TCL Android TV, model 65S434-CA.

At some point, somebody has setup a restricted settings PIN. I have no idea what the PIN is.

I want to factory reset it but none of the online guidance, or even the factory user manual is any help.

I can't reset it through the menu via remote because it is in restricted mode.

There is no reset button to press with a pin.

The factory default PIN codes such as 1234, 0423, or 0812 don't work.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

I don't care if the TV is completely reset. I just need to get it out of restricted mode.

Upgrade firestick or is there something better?

    Posted: 06 May 2022 08:49 AM PDT

I have an old firestick(4-5 years old) that has been a little laggy lately. I was going to upgrade to a newer version but then stumbled across this sub. I see there are a ton of different android tv boxes out there, and was wondering if there were better devices for my use case than just simply upgrading my old fire tv stick.

    • I run my Fire TV Stick on ethernet, and don't plan on using WiFi.
    • ~80% of my usage is from my local Plex media server.
    • ~10% Netflix, ~10% Direct TV Now
    • I stream IPTV from my plex server but it kinda sucks so I was thinking of sideloading IPTV Smarters or something. Are there better devices for IPTV streaming?
    • I have an old school Chromecast which I cast to from time to time it runs on WiFi because of subnet issues. (Wired is segmented from WiFi)
    • New fire stick is like $45. I'm not tight on budget but is there a better bang for your buck out there?

Android TV can't connect to hidden network

    Posted: 05 May 2022 09:59 PM PDT

Yea I know hidden networks don't work and blah blah blah but it's not my internet as I live with my cousin. Literally just like 3 hours ago my Tv just randomly disconnected from my cousins wifi and after trying and researching (nothing came up smh) I've come here for help. Auto sync date and time is on, unplugged, restarted, turned off and back on, the system is up to date, the internet works fine on all other devices I have, even did a factory fucking reset and still doesn't work. It just says couldn't find network whenever I try. I can connect to my mobile hotspot just fine.

Remote with Jog / Scrub Wheel - recommendations?

    Posted: 05 May 2022 10:22 PM PDT

Could anyone please recommend an Android/Google TV compatible TV remote that has a a jog wheel for scrubbing through a video track - like the way the Apple TV remote or old Apple iPod does? (the round ring touchpad where you move your thumb in a circular fashion to scroll forward or backwards smoothly and accurately through the video)

    Thanks!

SmartTubeNext on CCwGTV can't play long videos fully but only their last 2 hours

    Posted: 05 May 2022 03:25 PM PDT

I'm on the latest version (14.75). If I try to watch a long video (like 6 hours), it doesn't start from the beginning and only its last 2 hours are playable.

This happened last week as well, but I didn't realize that it was happening since it started from roughly the same spot where I stopped watching on my PC and I thought it was intentional from the app to save ram or something.

Edit: It fixed itself overnight? I didn't change anything nor update the app, I have no idea.

Could there be a difference in how my TV displays HDR depending on whether I run it on my dated Linux based OS compared to a media stick with Google TV?

    Posted: 05 May 2022 05:47 PM PDT

I get 2160p HDR on both methods but it feels like it looks better on Google TV and the latest version of YouTube. But since it's a digital signal there can't really be different 1's and 0's.

Can we somehow get Android TV 10 or higher on PC?

    Posted: 05 May 2022 04:04 PM PDT

As far as I could search, only Android 9 is available on PC. Are others also out there, or is this it?

Sorry if it's a dumb ques, but just getting into all this, so really wanna know.

EDIT: Also, why is Android TV only limited to 1080p resolution? Is there a way to get to 4K at least?
