Should we stop the shutdown of 2G/3G to save lives?? A lack of VoLTE standardisation breaks voice calling globally - Presentation to European Emergency Number Association Conference

    Posted: 05 May 2022 11:25 PM PDT

A while back I posted here on VoLTE and VoWiFi and why it is broken. I speculated then that this might hurt emergency services and other essential services. I got lots of useful feedback from r/Android https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/p6r99j/why_voltevowifi_often_doesnt_work_on_your_android/ The analysis I did, complemented with your comments and discussion alerted some people in the world of regulators and emergency services (911/112).

That feedback was very useful for me when I noticed that the 2G/3G shutdown by AT&T broke roaming and emergency calling for foreigners travelling to the USA. The European Emergency Number Association then asked me to present on this at their conference last week in Marseille, because being able to reach emergency services should not depend on the phone or network you use.

I've put the slides online for you to see and react to. I've added "Cynical" before the words" guide to emergency calling over VoLTE for consumers" on slide 7, because I found out that some people thought I'm serious when I the table says "Don't Travel" or "Do use iPhone" or "Do live in big country" https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CCdjmi5uLR00-KIXCmFn6v1SU2NPnQ0w/view?usp=sharing As requested by the mods I removed the identifying information

    Samsung Galaxy S22+... woes?

    Posted: 06 May 2022 08:06 AM PDT

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. I'm coming from an iPhone 12 and this S22+ is great. The battery life is great, it doesn't have as much lag as my iPhone did, the screen is much better. All I can see in this sub is complaints about the S22 and S22+. It seems to me that either I got incredibly lucky or r/android is full of pedants. Have any of you had a positive experience with this phone?

at a glance weather temp fix - Android 12/pixel 6

    Posted: 05 May 2022 08:27 PM PDT

Hi all, I've been trying to fix this issue for awhile and I found a way to trouble shoot it a little bit. The work around is essentially using the weather widget to restart the at a glance weather. I believe the main issue is most of us turn off our location history (for good reason) and it messes with the weather function of at a glance

    weather fix screens

I included screen shots to show you what I did

Image 2: you need to make sure that your personalize using app data function is on. I know a lot of ppl don't like his, but the weather at a glance will not work without this function (for some reason)

Image 3: I added the widget for weather and the mini widget to give you examples. Whenever my weather at a glance freezes, doesn't update the weather, or just disappears....I tap on one of these widgets and it resets the weather data and makes the at a glance weather reappear

Image 4: this is just to show you wear to get the mini icon. You have to go into the Google weather widget, click your profile icon, and you will see the add to home screen

It's not a permanent fix....and if you want a perm fix you may need to allow more data than you are comfortable with. But this is temporary enough to keep the aesthetics of the weather for the lock screen and homepage.....I hope this helps. If it doesn't, I'm sorry

(Idea) (Concept) Third party custom android clockface support

    Posted: 05 May 2022 12:43 PM PDT

I think a good way to give personalization to your phone and brand recognition to android would be to give them personalizable clockfaces in the same way as watchfaces in wear os with apps like facer, they would be pretty similar to widgets in implementation

    https://imgur.com/a/jpnu71l

it would be so cool if google implemented this feature into android and have other oems to implement the feature later as well, the pixel lockscreen looks kinda boring and badly designed so customization like that would improve it a lot

(Edit: check out the imgur link, it has more images)

    What are your homepage weblinks

    Posted: 04 May 2022 06:34 AM PDT

There's a number of websites that instead of using their app I have simply bookmarked their mobile page to my home screen. (I.e Wolfram|Alpha)

Usually because there's no discernable difference, especially when you have to pay for the app.

As I was doing some math with wolfram it got me wondering, what sites do you guys do this with? (just bookmark the mobile to your homepage instead of getting the apps)
