I Recently Askes r/android about their Must-Haves Checklists Before Buying A New Phone. More Than a Hundred People Responded. Here are the Results

    Posted: 03 May 2022 09:33 AM PDT

I manually read and categorized every comment made in the original post. Removing the Non Answers and nice to haves. The charts may be prone to human error. I wasn't actually planning on doing something like this when I asked the question so it could definitely could have been worded better to get better and more accurate responses. Lastly because some people rambled about phone features instead of listing them I had to use my creative liberty a bit to categorize their opinions.

There are 3 types of charts:

The first one is the main one where only the most talked about general Must Have features will be shown. The less talked about features will be categorized as 'Others'. Only Features that got 7 or more mentions will be on the first chart.

The second Charts will break down some of the popular features that a lot of people listed. Note that for the Display and Camera categories, because sometimes people list more than 2 things (like listing both oled and 120hz) the numbers on the second charts won't add up compared to the first chart on these two categories.

The third chart is for the 'others' category. Features that were mentioned by only one person will not be on the third chart. The one off features will be listed as a bullet point.

This is not a poll. I just compiled all the comments on my post and turned it into charts.

Samsung A53 5G After One Week

    Posted: 03 May 2022 02:24 PM PDT

    Not quite a review, but...

Long time Motorola user (because I like a "clean" Android), but my last phone died, and I was sick (SICK) of the piss poor update policy that Motorola operates by (or doesn't).

My budget was $350, and I had a couple of $50 Best Buy gift cards, so I took a shot at an A53 5G, and so far, I'm pleasantly surprised. One UI is actually pretty nice (SOOOOOO many settings), and after using ADB to uninstall a handful of "I will absolutely never use that" apps, installing Gboard and a few other things, I've become pretty comfortable with it.

I'm not a huge gamer; I play a few pretty graphically UN-intensive games on my phone and a handful of "triple A" titles on Stadia only (on a GCCwGTV - not on my phone). That said, I don't need a ton of horsepower, but I will say that putting the phone through its daily-use paces, it's a LOT faster than my old Motorola (2018 G7).

The OLED screen is super nice, and probably contributes to the phone's excellent battery life. I have the "Protect Battery" (or whatever) setting turned on, which limits charging to 85%, and I continually get through a day of random navigation, web browsing, redditing, several .5-to-1-hour work calls (w/ a Bluetooth headset connected), texting, and phone calls with 35 - 55% left in the tank (depending on the day and use).

I also love the on-screen fingerprint scanner, which works really, really well. I once tried a OnePlus 6T, and the performance at the time was crazy good, but the on-screen fingerprint scanner was an absolute joke. The implementation here works well, consistently.

Stereo speakers are nice, and the sound is good, if just a tiny bit tinny, but that's to be expected -- it's a phone, not my home theater system. Call quality is good, and the speakers definitely make calls using speaker much more tolerable than they are over a single speaker.

Photos are great, if not flagship level, but I wasn't expecting that. They're a little overblown in their saturation, but that's easily tweaked. Night mode isn't as good as a Pixel's, obs, but it's not bad and has surprised on a few occasions.

I'll continue to playing with it and will probably uninstall additional Samsung stuff over time, but for those who aren't big gamers and want a good phone that offers a great screen, great battery life, a good camera, and great performance, I just thought I'd chime in and pass along my personal experience.

Smartphone battery comparisons by mAh, are fundementally wrong.

    Posted: 03 May 2022 06:38 PM PDT

Everyone compares battery capacities by mAh. But milli ampere hours does not give you the amount of energy a battery can store.

For example, a 3.7V 4000 mAh battery can hold more energy than a 3V 4000mAh battery But lets say, when comparing two phones with the above batteries, everyone would say they have the same capacity battery and move on, even tech reviewers !? No one give a damp about the voltage!

The proper unit to measure battery capacities is Wh (Watt hours), which is obtained by multiplying Ah with volts. ( V × Ah = Wh )

Motorola Edge plus (2020) compared to current flagship phones.

    Posted: 03 May 2022 09:59 AM PDT

So I have had the Motorola Edge plus since it came out back in 2020, and honestly I have really enjoyed the phone. Besides a few glitches and some other brought patches the phone has been great.

But it's been two years and I'm itching to upgrade to a new phone. I keep up to date with phones and the pace of technology but I've kinda noticed a bit of stagnation in the phone market.

Looking on GSMArena for specifications, I'm not seeing a huge change over the two years it's been since I've gotten this phone.

Most modern flagships seem to have gotten cheaper, but performance wise I hardly see even marginal improvements.

Does anyone agree, or do you feel your new flagships come out stronger than what's on paper?

Z Fold 4 and Google foldable will have similar sized foldable displays, but the Google cover display will be quite a bit smaller at 5.8". This should mean it will have a wider aspect ratio than the Samsung 6.19" Fold 4. Hear more at our conference next week. - Ross Young
