    Weekly Questions Thread - October 26, 2021

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 06:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

    Android API not stable

    Posted: 25 Oct 2021 10:28 PM PDT

This isn't the first time parts of the public Android API suddenly disappear, previously it's just been methods, where reflection could be used as workaround, but for Android 12 the whole android.service.voice.AlwaysOnHotwordDetector class is missing when compileSdkVersion=31. It wasn't deprecated, it's been completely removed, so an app using it will no longer compile. Please star.

The Android development team seems to have become so incompetent that they no longer understand/care about backward compatibility. Fragmentation has gone out of control.

Prepare for Associate Android Developer Certification Exam

    Posted: 25 Oct 2021 08:37 PM PDT

    https://developers.google.com/certification/associate-android-developer/study-guide

    1. Anyone taken this test before know how they tested you on the Debugging and Testing section?
    2. How deep of an understanding is needed? For example WorkManager, did they ask you to call some API? or simply calling some function they provided like in the codelab?
    3. Did they test you on anything not on the study guide? Like Retrofit, okhttp concept?

Anything help, thanks for any tips

Looking for a faster android development build? I made a tool to run your code in the cloud.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 04:14 AM PDT

    Hi Android Developers,
If you struggle with the android build time or your machine gets laggy when you hit the run button, give Buildman a try. It is an Android Studio plugin to build your codes in the cloud.
You can download it from the plugin section from android studio settings or the JetBrains marketplace.

    Feedbacks are welcome.

Why are apps not made to be inclusive of the visually impaired?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 01:43 AM PDT

I am registered visually impaired (blind but with some usable sight) and I struggle with the constant ads in some apps. The developers use tiny X's that are hard to see and require pinpoint accuracy to close the ad. I understand that they need to use ads to generate the cash to pay for the app but I guess this generates more cash than a one off purchase of the app. I hate that many apps have taken up the subscription route to milk users for more cash. Very few developers create content with accessibility for people with visual impairments, we are ignored because it's seen that we don't generate enough cash for these guys. I have petitioned Google but as you can imagine, there's been no response and likely never will be as long as they're making money too.

What has been your experience on the 8GB Macbook pro M1 chip?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 02:17 AM PDT

    (As an Android Developer)
I am looking to get a new Macbook and I was wondering if your Android Studio + Emulators + all what we do everyday, runs well on a macbook pro 8gb with M1 chip from last year. Do you suggest buying it, or better go with the 16 GB version?

Capturing bluetooth and TCP traffic exchanged by an App

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 05:09 AM PDT

I want to look at the bluetooth communication done by an android app. Would a good approach be to install the app in a PC emulator and capture the bluetooth communication from the PC's bluetooth adapter/emulator virtual adapter somehow? If this isn't a feasible approach as I've seen emulators don't support voice/bluetooth communication, what would an alternative be? I'm trying to avoid real devices as I may need to re-establish the initial communication multiple times and as well as be able to look at the internet traffic exchanged by the app.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 04:35 AM PDT

    Hi,

is there any guide on how to migrate an existing App (Androidx, Kotlin) to Jetpack Compose? I mainly use coroutines, androidx.camera, androidx.navigation, androidx.room and mlkit. So I have a single activity which hosts a fragment based on bottom navigation bar

I wanna use an old android

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 07:55 AM PDT

I used to have an old android. My first phone. I was like 9. It was a Samsung with not much storage. My sister got it handed down but then stopped using it and I just have it sitting around. Problem is I'm locked out of it as it has my sisters old account and password which neither me nor her recall so I'm effectively locked out of the device. I wanna wipe it and install a lightweight new OS that has the Google play store. How would I go about doing this? Is it even possible? By lightweight I mean really because it's a phone from like 8 years ago.

[Google Play Store] is it risky for my app?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 04:08 AM PDT

Hello, I am analyzing if I publish my application in the Play Store or not, I currently distribute the application among the clients. My question is if there is risk, because the application could be exposed to websites and companies dedicated to downloading public applications and analyzing them.

Could money be the only reason to stay with a company as an Android Developer?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 07:39 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've been hired by a company in the past for an external project. (which was a native Android app) They have more focus on web apps. Since they just hired me and there was no active development on the native app, I got jobless regarding my project. So talked with them and they said they have some hybrid apps and would like to dedicate me to these apps and last week I got my project with Ionic+Angular. After doing Android Development for approximately 5 years, it doesn't seem fancy as I compared it with the native apps.

On the other side, if I learn these technologies (Angular) maybe I can stay ten years there because they have tons of products related to them. I like company culture, salary, or future but I don't like the tech stack. I think in the near future they will not dedicate themselves to native Android development. What could be your decision if you were in the same position that I am now. I can't decide to stay for the money and switching to new technologies is good or not for native Android developer. That reason I couldn't focus on my job. This makes me feel insufficient and I don't know what to do.

    Thanks for the recommendations.

Is anyone else facing problems with pushing to Github from Android Studio?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 05:15 AM PDT

I used a Github token with Android Studio 2020 (Artic Fox), and when I push my code, it says "GIT_ASKPASS_TOKEN environment variable is not defined!".

Googling didn't help me much in solving the problem. Or maybe I didn't google the right stuff. Either way, I am stuck. Any ideas how I can fix this?

Can M1 MacBook Pro Android Studio have Emulator Android 11 SDK or lower?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 05:02 AM PDT

When Android Studio first got supported in M1 Machine, I have some challenges setting up the Emulator. Now that I got the emulator working for Android 12.0 SDK.

Sometimes I wanted to test compatibility with older Android SDK versions (11 or lower). Has anyone with M1 MacBook Pro managed to install the older version SDK on the emulator?

Android Notification only showing up, when I'm being proactiv

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 01:28 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

we're an entertainment app publisher. I'm an iOS-native so please bear with me.

I just purchased the most used Android device for our app, and it turns out that I'm not getting any kind of notifications from our app but from our competitors. All Notification settings are enabled, Android and app wise.

What is kinda odd, is that when I'm actively using the app and trigger some in-app-activity events, all notification will be shown regarding the trigger event. Does anyone have an idea what's going on here? Thanks in advance!

Can't Seem to Pick a Game Engine

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 12:40 AM PDT

Hi guys. I'm having a lot of trouble choosing a game engine. It's kind of doing my head in with information overload. For now I'm looking at things other than unity and unreal since I'm fairly familiar with what features they offer

I'm looking for an engine to do all the following: - very beginner friendly, as much drag and drop as possible - my coding knowledge is next to nonexistant - will be used for an Android fps with stealth elements - dense forest/nature scenes that lean towards photorealistic (and not cartooney)

I've narrowed the options down to coppercube 6, lumberyard/CryEngine, Godot, and unity/unreal (not sure how easy dense forest scenes are with t unity and unreal compared to lumberyard), am looking for something easy to pickup that can fulfill all of the above. I'm open to alternative suggestions.

I understand Godot is the easiest but I'm not sure how feasible it is to creat a 3D fps with lots of foliage in it?

    Question about smartwatches

    Posted: 25 Oct 2021 11:20 PM PDT

    Hi to all,

my question is not strictly about Android, but I think only here I have some chances to find the answer...

Do you know any smartwatch that is able to display images sent from the phone?

Here is example of what I need: the user connects his/her watch with the phone by Bluetooth (it doesn't matter if it will be "paired" or just selected in my app) and then through some API my Android app is able to send small images to be displayed on the watch. Image may be displayed until my app sends command "display off" or sends another image or they could auto-disappear after some time - all these scenarios are OK for me.

Do you know anything like this?
