When did white text on a black background become okay?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 02:57 PM PDT

A few years ago, as Android was growing into those shoes that it's grandma bought, the world was exploring dark mode all over again.

User Experience Design was kinda a huge thing and I remember seeing loads of articles stating how white text on a black background was bad.

    Example: https://uxmovement.com/content/why-you-should-never-use-pure-black-for-text-or-backgrounds/ Older Example: https://tatham.blog/2008/10/13/why-light-text-on-dark-background-is-a-bad-idea/

However, the push for pure black backgrounds continued to grow, thanks mostly to AMOLED displays as more and more users attempted to save as much battery life as possible using whichever means they could find.

Fast-forward to Android 12 and the Pixel doesn't have a dark mode that's anything other than white text on a pure black background. That in itself is perplexing, but when did this happen? And why isn't there an option to set the dark background colours in the style settings? Are 58% of adults just doomed to eyestrain?

It's odd because I noticed that Firefox also threw this user experience research out of the window and removed the pleasant grey from their reader mode's dark theme in favour of a pure black background. I'm genuinely curious, is there new research out that suggests this is an improvement?

Is there any chance we see other dark options available in Material You?

Bixby gets too much hate, it's nice to have when Google Assistant doesn't have work

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 07:53 AM PDT

I've been using voice assistants more when driving now and so far two times Google Assistant has failed me.

Once when I was looking for Mexican Party Music, Google Assistant played an album where as Bixby gave me a Playlist.

The second time was today when I asked it to start my music. Google Assistant said it couldn't understand what I said even though I was yelling at it to start my music. Bixby started my music.

I think so far when it comes to music at least, Bixby is better.
