ZTE Axon 30 5G review: A beautiful uninterrupted glass display held back by minor flaws

    Black Shark 4 5G - thoughts after a month

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 06:33 PM PDT

So I realise this isn't really a popular phone by any stretch, but I've been having a hard time finding much in the way of reviews from people who've actually used this handset for any length of time so I thought I'd put some thoughts together after a few weeks of use for anyone interested/considering it.

    User Profile

I'm using this as a "personal" phone while my iPhone is repurposed for work. So basically anything that isn't work or banking related is happening on this phone. My main uses are social media, gaming, news, and media consumption. I play a bit of CoD Mobile, PUBG, and Genshin.

    Pros

    • Damn cheap for what it is, currently in Australia you can buy the 12GB model in-store for $799 which is I guess about $550-580 USD? Cheaper on Aliexpress, if you're comfortable buying from there...

    • The 870 is great, can't speak for benchmarks but in real world tasks it never struggles.

    • Popup triggers are very very useful for gaming, and absolutely nothing else. Also the mechanism feels really nice.

    • Haptics are some of the best I've seen on an Android, and by far the best I've seen on an Android this cheap.

    • 120W charging is nuts, and genuinely useful.

    • Screen is really nice at (higher brightness).

    • It feels way more premium than it actually is, very nice to hold.

    • Wifi, bluetooth and cellular all up to par - zero connectivity issues and maxing out speeds on wifi/5G easily.

    • I've actually had TWO updates for it so far, which blew my mind a bit given Xiaomi's history with updates. I've little hope this will be an ongoing thing though.

    • Main camera is pretty decent, very neutral tone to everything which I personally prefer. Gets left in the dust by flagships though.

    Cons

    • The glass doesn't seem to be gorilla glass and scratches REALLY easily. You absolutely need a glass screen protector if you're keeping this in your pocket.

    • At low/lower brightness, especially on dark grey screens, you can see some kind of banding going on. The left side of the screen is noticeably darker than the right. Goes away completely at 30% or higher brightness, and seems to be common according to a couple other BS4 owners I've spoken to.

    • Nova Launcher just straight up does not play nicely with "JoyUI" (MIUI with more green, basically). Other launchers also had odd issues every now and then but Nova basically made the phone unusable.

    • No expandable storage on a phone that's built for gaming is really dumb. I can absolutely see some people running out of space on this when some mobile games now are like 8GB+ installed.

    • Battery life isn't amazing, but to be fair I do run it at 144hz all the time + have 5G so that's on me as much as the phone.

    • There's ads in the phone. Yes you can turn them off, but you'll still get ads appearing at random in the bloatware apps it ships with.

    • Nearly zero hope of custom ROM's every being a thing for this phone.

    • There's the usual bloatware apps, only 2 of which are remotely useful.

    • Accessories are hard to come buy unless you get them on Aliexpress.

    • I would be willing to bet all of my money, that every byte of data I've put on this phone has been reported back to Winnie the Pooh.

    Conclusion

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. It's downsides aren't deal breakers for me personally as I can work around them, the performance is excellent, and the screen + build quality just makes it a really nice phone to hold and use.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

    2021 Tablets state.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 10:19 AM PDT

I'm so pissed. It's 2021, long since Netflix and AmazonPrime, and from all these tablet-manufacturers NOT EVEN ONE offers a tablet with these 2 features at core:

    1) NO CAMERAS
Why do I need (not only front camera - where u can say u do calls and such). BUT ALSO a fucking back camera. WTF. When we all know even a $200 phone has better camera. Why do I have to have some useless lump on the back that ruins both aesthetics , cost more to produce, and makes the tablet rock on the table.

    2) THIN BEZELS
The best "excuse" I could find for this is .. you can't hold it w/o touching the screen. Bitch, please! It's 2021, make some software-finger detection. There are phones with fullscreen from front-to-back and do not whine about this problem.

A tablet perfect for browsing, consuming content and playing (prolly 80% of what ppl use them for anyway). Here's a poll from CNET showing that barely 30% of users actually "need" the camera in their tablet: https://prnt.sc/1rbenz3

Why none of the big dogs have not released such product yet? HELLO ? it's a 70% market given the poll above. A tablet with excelent screen (1920x1080), thin bezels and no bloatware camera. With solid build and slick design like an IPAD, and with enough power for your content-consuming. No octacore/16gb ram mumbo jumbo.

They can release N types of Samsung Phones, but cannot release another simple strict type of tablet? Really ?!
