Android Questions: Pixel 4a launcher crashing?

    Pixel 4a launcher crashing?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 08:17 AM PDT

Just looking to see if anyone else has seen this.

I have a Pixel 4a that is up to date.

The past few days when swiping left through pages (going right), it will jump all the way back to the Google Now page, and then when swiping left again to go where I was going, everything goes blank except the background image. I can still pulldown the top bar, but that's about it.

Rebooting the phone solves this, but not sure what is causing. I don't get too app crazy, and plenty of storage available on the phone (only using about 35%).

I am about to uninstall the last app installed, to see if that was the culprit, but I don't think so.

If anyone has any ideas, it would be appreciated, otherwise if it keeps happening I will just reset and start from scratch I guess.

    Thank you.

Trying To Figure Out How To Hide Email Accounts From "Manage accounts"

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 12:25 PM PDT

To start with, I'm not asking about user accounts for a multi-user phone just to be clear.

Some of this might be specific to Samsung phones since that is what I use, but I think this account management stuff is built into Android at a deeper level. I haven't been able to figure it out.

If you add a new email account to an app, for some reason it gets "reported" back to the operating system. It doesn't matter whether you use the default email app that came with your phone or a third party app. In fact, I've tried 5 different email apps and whenever I add any email account to them, they get "reported" back to the operating system and show up in the list of accounts under "Manage accounts". The whole concept of the operating system keeping track of my 3rd party accounts seems fundamentally alien to me. For example, if I add an email account in Thunderbird installed on Windows, it's not like Microsoft suddenly keeps it in a list of my accounts. Microsoft doesn't seem to record anything about my steam account. This behavior makes some things more convenient for easier logins, but it's not like recording an account that I only use for email does anything useful.

I thought perhaps this might have something to do with the whole OAuth system, but even when I added an email account via SMTP, it was reported back to the operating system and showed up in the accounts list.

Why do I care? Mainly due to privacy and security concerns, I like the idea of doing different things on different accounts. I'd rather not have google combining a profile with my email, contacts, social media, television watching, phone, gaming, and who knows what else... And I'd rather not have a single point a failure for all of those accounts.

I'm assuming that this list of accounts kept by the operating system is considered relatively public. My guess is that nearly all apps can get access to the list to use them for login information. Google obviously has access to it. That sort of defeats the purpose of separating my accounts in the first place.

TLDR; Does anyone know of a way to add an email account to an app in Android *without* the app reporting the account back to the operating system to add it to the "Manage accounts" list? Are there any 3rd party email clients that do this? I'm willing to install an extra app for "email only" accounts.

Is there any way to remove recent files for the *blue* files app?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 12:24 PM PDT

I've dug around and found it's a system app. Every time an app asks me for a picture it comes up and the recent files has every file I've ever opened. Is there a way to disable this? Already disabled recent files for the orange "my files" app. Couldn't find anything in settings>apps>files, as everything is greyed out for the blue one. (Samsung btw).

App notification and connection settings randomly turn back on after being disabled for awhile

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 11:18 AM PDT

I turn the notifications off for most of my apps, because I don't like being constantly bombarded with adverts from Domino's, updates from Facebook, and so on. I also turn off Background & Cellular data for most apps. But between several days and a few weeks later, they all magically turn back on and start advertising first thing in the morning.

I haven't opened the Pizza Hut app in several months, so I know I didn't just "turn it on by accident" a few weeks ago. I've run MBAM and it has never detected a virus. It's tedious needing to skim through the app list every few days to make sure my phone isn't changing its settings behind my back. Has anyone else dealt with this problem? Is there a certain built-in app (ie Google Play Store) that does this, and if so, how do I disable this function?

Can someone recommend a 7 inch tablet with decent gps and no physical or touch buttons below the screen?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 11:18 AM PDT

I'm planning to use it as a replacement of my car's old navigation screen. It doesn't have to be fancy in any way. as long as it has GPS, cellular and no buttons it's all good. I'm open for cheap knock offs as well as long as they're not Wish.com tier bad.

Is it necessary for the phone to be rooted in order to download a newer version of the system?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 10:58 AM PDT

Hi, I have android 5.1 and it's the latest version of my device, I want to download a newer version because there are permissions that are no longer available for android 5, but after searching I learned that the device must be in root mode in order to do this process.. and this is a great danger to the device because if it is damaged, I will not be able to repair it again... So, does the device have to be rooted for this process? And if not.. are there other safer ways besides this way?

Fiancee's text messages are coming from a different phone number

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 10:06 AM PDT

Hello, my fiancee's phone has been having an issue where when I get a text from her, it will be her normal phone number but at random it will come from a different random string of numbers and if I try to text that number back, it says this number has blocked you. I was wondering if anyone knows what this issue is because now other people she texts get that weird number too and don't respond to her because they don't recognize the number.

Popping and crackling noise when start, stop or fast foward a video (s21 ultra)

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 09:00 AM PDT

I noticed that whenever I start, stop or fast forward a video/ music, a crackling and popping noise suddenly appears. For example when I exit a video on YouTube with the home button. The weird thing is that the weird noises only appears with youtube, Reddit, Netflix but not with Samsung music player. The noises also show up when I plug in headphones so I don't think it's the speaker's fault

Ads on games don't mute its volume

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 08:40 AM PDT

Hello, everyone! I really don't know where to ask this question, so if my post violates any rules of the sub, I apologize. So my question is, do you guys encounter ads that doesn't mute its sound? I don't despise ads, I watch them because the game that I play gives me reward, so I watch around 8-12 ads for these rewards, and also, some of the games that I played are first seen on ads. I read on other sites that "my phone isn't fully muted", but i am pretty sure it is because 1) my music and other notification doesn't play sound, 2) other ads don't play sound, and 3) the MUTE BUTTON ON THE AD ITSELF DOESN'T WORK. There was even a time when I plugged in my earphone, yet the sound of the ad played on the phone speaker (again, music and other ad don't play sound). Is this normal? My phone is Xiaomi Redmi 9T, if this is relevant. Thank you, people! I hope I am not violating any rules in the sub.

Help with Quickmemo+ on Lg G7 ThinQ

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 07:26 AM PDT

I had some locked memos and I tried to unlock them and accidentally deleted them, I thought I could just go to the trash and restore them but they weren't there, for some reason when you delete locked memos it automatically deletes them permanently. Is there any way to retrieve these? I've read some websites saying that it is possible, but I haven't found a specific solution yet. There was a lot of stuff on those memos so any help is appreciated. Thank you :)

Google Messages app reminder feature not working/inconsistent

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 07:11 AM PDT

I'm on Android 11, Pixel 4a, Google Messages stock messaging app.

I used to have a "snooze" aka reminder function for texts (long press text or conversation, a clock to set a reminder appears in the options). Today I tried to use it and it was gone. Spent last 2 hours trying to find and fix and update to no avail. Felt like I was losing my mind, search the internet, no mention of that feature disappearing.

So I joined the beta, and now I have the feature again. So then I leave the beta: feature is still there.

What the hell is happening? Is setting a reminder for a text only a beta feature or not? When did it disappear from the non-beta app?

Tl:dr: What do I need to do to consistently have access to Google Messages text reminder feature?

Is there anyway to use the Developer options from a secondary user which is not owner?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 06:39 AM PDT

I created a secondary Android user, but Developer options which I enabled first from the owner account is not available, and even when I change a developer setting in the owner account, the change is not passed to the secondary user account.

    What should I do?

Is there a solution to this Android 11 issue?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 06:34 AM PDT

I just updated my phone - a Samsung Galaxy A10s - to Android 11 this morning when I woke up. The first thing I noticed: the red X on the battery.

My phone was fully charged at the time, but it's still concerning. When I do need to charge my phone, what will happen? Will it just not work? Will it be excruciatingly slow?

Is there any fix for it? Is there any way to get rid of the update? I'd gladly go back to Android 10 if it means my phone charging properly, if it's even possible.

App closing in background when closed in foreground.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 06:08 AM PDT

    Please help.

My son's hockey team uses TeamSnap.

I'm not receiving notifications from this app. My wife also has the app, and she receives notifications fine.

I believe the problem is that when I exit the app, it stops running in the background.

On my wife's phone, if I exit the app, then go into settings > apps > teamsnap, I have the option to Force Stop.

On my phone, Force Stop is greyed out, as if the app isn't running in the background.

I've looked through the app's settings, and all notifications are on. I get notifications as long as the app is open, but I prefer not to keep the app open all the time.

I cleared cache. Uninstalled / reinstalled.

    Battery Saver is off.

I cannot find any options to allow / disallow this app from running in the background.

I went so far as to factory reset my phone. After reset, I installed the app fresh from the Google Play Store. Same behavior after reset.

    Android 11 - TCL Pro 10 (T799B)

    Everything updated via system update.

Apps > TeamSnap > Advanced > Battery > Background activity : App can use battery in background

    Pixel 4a screen issues

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 05:53 AM PDT

I went for a run a couple weeks ago and got caught out in a little rain storm, a little bit of water seems to have gotten into the phone, I bought some water absorbing pellets and left the phone in the bag with them overnight. The problem has not gotten any worse, but it also hasn't gotten any better. There is a horizontal band maybe half an inch wide where my screen is not responsive. I'm not able to perform two finger actions, like zooming or anything like that (anywhere on the screen). My phone is mostly functional as long as I avoid that band (it's about 1/3 of the way down the screen near the top). I was wondering if anyone else ever had the same problem and if so how to fix. There is no screen discoloration or anything else. Do I have to take the phone in to a repair shop?

Is overcharging a phone still an issue? I just thought by now it would be fixed as it's such a common occurrence with charging overnight. If it's still an issue then why ?
