[Discussion] Why is it taking so long for an Android desktop system to become popular?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 10:14 AM PDT

A popular trend in the operating system market during the last years has been trying to create a same environment and fell for smartphones and desktops. Windows failed miserably with Windows 8, breaking the desktop usability, while also not having that many apps for there smartphones, since the system architecture was different. Apple has been quite successful in making iOS and macOS look similar, and now macOS can even run some iOS applications in the new M1 computers. But why is it taking Android so long to have a popular desktop system?

Since Android is Java-based, different architectures aren't a problem for most apps, which is why people can install apps from the Google Play Store into Desktop Androids. That also means that their libraries are already huge, with many of the applications adapted to different screen sizes (thanks to tablets). Even huge applications are available, like the Microsoft package (Office, Teams, Outlook) used by lots of companies, Google Chrome, Spotify, VLC, and many others.

It's worth saying that I had almost no experience using Desktop Androids, but I've researched about them, and watched different videos of people using them. Those are Remix Android OS, OPENTHOS, Android X86, Phoenix OS, Chrome OS, Prime OS, Lineage OS and Fyde OS (which was the most complete list I could find, from this website).

Based in what I saw, my assumption is that this is basically the Windows 8 scenario again. Windows 8 was properly adapted to mobile systems, but ignored the fact the desktops have their own needs, since the usability is different. Desktop Androids are, most of the times, the same Android you see in phones, with window management, a taskbar, and that's it.

The Desktop Android that dares the most, in my opinion, is Phoenix OS, which seems to include a proper desktop and a file explorer, at least... but it does that by copying their visuals from other systems, instead of keeping the Android look and feel.

TL;DR: In my opinion, we still need a Desktop Android that has a good Desktop UX, while still keeping the Smartphone UI.

But all of this is my opinion. What do you think?

EDIT: Just clarifying, I'm reffering to Desktop Android distros (like Chrome OS in Google Chromebooks, for example), and not to Android phones using peripherals to "become computers".
