Dolby Atmos on Tidal and Apple Music sound different! I've been comparing for hours.

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 09:38 AM PDT

I'm not sure why but it definitely seems like Dolby Atmos is not just an algorithm on Android or something companies slap in their apps to decode the music produced in the format.

I am a big Spatial Audio enthusiast and am very interesting in the various Binaural Decoding methods that have been released to allow the playback through stereo headphones. Setup: OnePlus 7 Pro with Dolby Atmos + OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z headphones.

I have both Apple Music and Tidal on my OnePlus 7 Pro which supports Atmos officially and I can say I can 100% notice a difference between them.

They are both absolutely more spatial than stereo and I can notice the difference the companies are pitching but it seems the implementations are totally different.

Tidal for me sounds way clearer. When listening to the exact same songs on Apple Music and on Tidal I can tell that Tidal retains the spatiality bit positions it a lot more accurately and is a lot clearer.

On the other hand Apple Music is way more spatial. It trades in some of the quality and crispness of the sound to add even more spatiality. Almost as if Apple chose to implement it in a way where they have a lot more space and three-dimensional sound including verticality even though that trades in some crispiness.

I have had a lot of fun going back and forth between one app to the other listening to the exact same songs at the same points and comparing. I can definitely tell that both companies have their own implementations and ways of achieving the effect. Depending on what they think their customers would want maybe.

Now this all has come from my own personal experience and is definitely not proof but I'm impressed. I though it would be just a decoder from Dolby that they'd slap in each app.

I never expected that I would hear the Spatial Audio in both but that it would be done differently.

P.S. I have made sure that both apps are configured correctly and that it goes through the actual Dolby Atmos decoder implementation in the OS of my phone.

TL/DR: Tidal and Apple Music seem to have their own specific ways of dealing with Dolby Atmos which ,in my own personal opinion, delivers different experiences with the exact same songs. Depending on what the customer prefers. Apple Music focuses on Spatiality while Tidal on Crispness of the sound. Both sound very Spatial still.

Any opinions on the topic would be appreciated. 😁

Galaxy S21 Benchmark Test July Update - Exynos 2100 vs Snapdragon 888

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 11:12 AM PDT

Discussion: Has anyone put together a compilation of Jon Prosser's predictions and noted which came true and which were total flops? I feel like r/Android either loves or hates him. I figure with all this love/hate, surely someone has made (or is willing to make) such a compilation?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 09:51 AM PDT

Maybe it really doesn't matter, but given how much this sub seems to care about "Jon Prosser" and the predictions he makes, I would expect someone would put the time into actually showing how often he's right and wrong.

I really know nothing about him other than that he apparently predicts some stuff and sometimes he's wrong, which I assume is true of most leakers/people with the inside scoop.

Does such a list exist? If not, why not? If you love OR hate Prosser, please prove that he's overall more successful or less successful with his predictions by making a list of ALL of them and going through each and showing whether it came true or not (honestly, such a list would be good if he's really the source of a lot of leaks—then people would easily be able to know "yeah, he's accurate with 70% of his predictions" or "nah, he's only right 30% of the time so whatever").
