| PSA - if your fb messenger photos are getting badly compressed, switch to fb messenger lite app Posted: 09 Jul 2021 02:46 AM PDT Sorry if not the right place to post, but I just tested this on an old shitty phone (Samsung galaxy A3 2017) and sure enough the pictures sent through the lite app are far less compressed and shitty looking. The lite app is the one that's meant to use less data than regular messenger, so that is utterly bizarre. People complain about this often so I think it would be helpful to make people aware of the workaround. Photos sent from android devices are definitely worse. Also some android devices are definitely worse than others. It shows the photo size on sent images on lite so the compression level is easily checkable. I got my friend a s10e to send me better cat pics, and it definitely takes better cats pics than the old phone (also A3) and also definitely compresses them far worse on messenger (but only sometimes?), so I was getting even more pixelated cats! Sure enough her pics show the lowest size images on messenger lite. Sent the same pic from A3 (downloaded from email) and it was less compressed with a larger file size, so I don't think it's just the original image having a bigger resolution making the compression look worse. It seems to be dependent on the phone sending the image as well? A3 sends the same picture on messenger lite slightly less compressed than an iPad (no lite app on ipad), according to the file sizes, quality looks very similar between the two.
