Will the Merge subgenre replace Match 3?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 08:46 AM PDT

I read Master the Meta latest take on Merge games and wanted to share some takeaways for discussion.

    • Sitting within the largest genre of Puzzle, the Merge subgenre has seen relatively stable downloads over the past 2.5 years despite the number of games having tripled over the same time period.
    • Since popularizing the genre in 2017, Zynga's Gram Games with Merge Dragons are slowly seeing more competitors entering the ecosystem with their share of downloads declining from 40% in Q1 2019 to 13% in Q2 2021.
    • Notable competitors include Metacore's Merge Mansion which recently raised $179M from Supercell that has backed them since 2018.
    • That said, total revenue volumes are still on an upward trajectory with Q2 2021 numbers being 3X of 2019 Q1. This implies that newer Merge games entrants that were able to scale should have been able to monetize reasonably well.
    • How will Merge grow next to Match-3? As it stands Merge's LTV and retention numbers are looking good but Match-3 player base is 6X the size and still growing. The two subgenres obviously share many similarities and arguably even similar audiences.
    • It will be interesting to see how Merge unlocks further growth by leveraging the well-established best practices of Match-3 while further optimizing live operations, meta systems and production assets to create the inter-genre differentiation that is needed to stand out.

    Re-installing game and turtorials

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 08:07 AM PDT

Why do so many games hide the settings menu to after you've completed a long tutorial? And why don't more of them check with Google-Play-Games or the Facebook account etc for save files? This makes me really frustrated and often give up and uninstall the game immediately. And I'm certain that it's the same for a lot of people. And mobile gaming comes with a lot of changing out the installed apps due to storage space, even for me and my 256gb phone. And we most definitely would pick up and play these games more often without these issues and therefore they miss out on revenue. It's a loss-loss situation

So, what should we do? Unite and "spam" the developers with the same copy and paste e-mail?

Ubisoft to release a new free to play mobile game by March 2022

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 01:42 AM PDT

Video game giant Ubisoft recently published their financial report for Q1 2021 and along with it comes quite interesting information for mobile gamers. While, of course, the company's main focus remains on the next generation of Xbox and PlayStation consoles as well as Microsoft Windows, the report hinted that a new mobile game by Ubisoft could be announced in the near future, most probably by March 2022. Overdox - .....it's a good game with several problems

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 10:08 AM PDT

The premise is nice, combine mobas with battle royale, sprinkle flashy effects and graphics and bam, you have yourself a game worth playing.

    Is it though?

Spent the last few days playing this game since I've started.

My honest opinion, is that this game needs a lot of work.

In the first few games you play as a "beginner", you will see bots like any other game on the market.

BUT, that changes when you get higher level weapons and as your rank increases. I mean, what fun is there to have if you're going to be matched against someone who is leagues above you and is p2w.

Yeah, that's another thing. This game is extremely p2w and it's not afraid to make you feel that you need to spend to win. Especially when resources needed to enter games (such as batteries for your drones, which give extra effects in-game) run out quickly)

After a few days, and if you've played the Royal Rumble mode, you'll see who's at the top, and don't be surprised when you see that it's p2w players at the top.

The next one is a big one, you cannot customize your controls. You have to play with what the game gives you. And it makes absolutely no sense as to why the Dash button (a very important button) is just a small icon at the bottom of the screen.

I shit you not, I have to constantly look down to see where the dash button is, and that itself is a risk especially when you're facing players that can decimate you in seconds.

The controls are actually decent but the failure to allow players to customize their controls is what's going to make me hit that uninstall button.

There's no real reason to get invested in this game, it gets boring really fast because of the amount of items in the game. The highest tier for weapons/armor which is Legendary doesn't have that many weapons or armor.

There is one set of Legendary armor for each "manufacturer"(if you equip 3 items from the same manufacturer, you get a set bonus) and a legendary weapon for each "type"(one-handed, two-handed, halberd, etc), so it's easy to see high ranking players equipped with the same weapons and armors.

I'll give the game the benefit of the doubt, November 2019 is fairly recent for a release but their 2 year mark is not too far away. There's no way in 2 years that there such a lackluster amount of versatility in the meta-game.

There's also no way in 2 years that the playerbase is so low that matchmaking has to also suffer for it.

It's a really good game, but everything behind it is so shitty that it makes really hard to enjoy the game or even continue.

And just like another mobile game, you get to the top by paying.

Welp. Thank you, Haegin. Definitely not happy.

P.S. Haegin has another game on the app store called "Play Together" which is probably the most chill casual mmo game right now. If you're someone who constantly suffers from anger problems and just wants to play a game to relax, then play this game.

Puzzle/simulation games like Cell Lab, Spacechem, etc. Or any niche games of the genres

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 10:05 AM PDT

I know of The Sequence 1 and 2. I also like programming puzzle games like Human Resource Machine, 7 Billion Humans.

I prefer portrait games, and for that matter does anyone know of any portrait simulators like Crash Dive?

App to simulate interacting with a screen (for idle style games)

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 02:38 AM PDT

As the title says, I'm after an app to repeatedly press the same buttons to ensure that I can leave my phone playing an idle style game, whilst I get on with my day. The buttons are in a uniform location if that helps? Does anything exist that is suitable?
