Why I love Android - Airmusic review

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 08:49 AM PDT

I'm the android guy in the IPhone family. I tried the IPhone for awhile and really liked it! However, I'm a open source lover at heart and the feeling of apples walled garden was constricting. So a couple months ago I got a pixel 5 and came back home.

My favorite things about android can be summed up in an old apple tag line " There's an app for that". One of my main frustrations with the IPhone was casting things to my google home speakers. Somethings worked and somethings didn't. Sucked!

I found with android I don't seem to have that problem... with the exception of Sonos speakers. I generally don't run across Sonos in my day to day. However, my office music at work is Sonos. Man does that app suck and I'm forced to play from random people's accounts. I don't care during regular hours but sometimes I pull weekend warrior duty and it blows. Last week I was desperate to figure this out.

That's when I had an apiphany. I can airplay from my Linux laptop surely I can do it from Android. Sure enough I found app Airmusic and it is glorious!!

The airplay functionality works great. And set up is pretty much a no brainner However, what I love about this app is it's a casting hub. Every cast protocol you can think of is supported.

I always wanted this on my phone because there is nothing worse than trying to share something when your a geust. And have to do the link text or cast dance. With this app I can see everything on the network and just send it!

Also there is a lot of config options for controlling how the apps behaves. It's a five dollar app but I feel like it was worth every penny.

Discussion on sideloading and if it makes android less safe by its existence

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 01:23 AM PDT

So I was watching and reading comments on this video by the ever thoughtful Rene Ritchie on the merits and demerits of sideloading. I noticed that the primarily Apple focused audience thinks very differently from me about sideloading. Many cite that sideloading ability made android less secure and they didn't want to have iPhones devolve. Also that just by sideloading being available most people would avoid using the google play store(edit:meant app store) to distribute apps and just distribute them as sideload versions. So I wanted to illicit feedback from a wider audience and see what a more android centric audience thinks.
