Why you can't compare iOS and Android when it comes to updates

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 02:25 PM PDT

Many people complain that iOS gets few more extra years of update support than Android, but it is not an apples-to-apples comparison (no pun intended). Here are reasons why Android and iOS updates work differently:

    1. Android system apps aren't tied to the OS: System apps are an integral part of the OS experience, yet on iOS they have to be updated through an OS update. Android generally doesn't have this limitation. You can update your web browser, phone dialer, calculator, and many other system apps through the Play Store/Galaxy Store. Even the launcher can be updated, which is basically a big part of the OS experience. This means, a 7-year-old Android will still be on the latest Chrome browser, but iOS will be stuck on an outdated version of Safari (and WebKit engine which all browsers on iOS have to use).
    2. Android core components can be updated through the Play Store: Just like system apps, many core parts of Android OS can now be updated via the Play Store thanks to Project Mainline and Google Play Services. This means parts of the OS such as Kernels, Media Codecs, DNS resolvers, and the runtime environment can be updated without relying on an OEM. Just recently, Google used AI to significantly improved GPS accuracy on all Android devices running Android 8 or newer that have Google Play Services. Google also rolled out the Nearby Sharing and COVID exposure features to older devices this way.
    3. Android version market share numbers are misleading: Right now in the US, the latest Android version makes up the majority of the Android OS versions. This is because, in developed markets, most Androids are 1-3-year-old Samsung devices that get good support. This isn't the case in developing markets where phones can cost $100 and obviously aren't meant to receive updates for price-cutting measures. Also, people don't realize that Android OS is a general operating system that can run on many types of devices. Many credit card terminals at a store run on Android, and even gym machines run on Android! These devices generally only run a single app and have no use for Android updates, yet they are still included when calculating Android OS market share.

As you can see, it's not very meaningful to compare Android updates to iOS as the 2 OSs work in a very different manner. Of course, we should be asking OEMs to support their devices for longer, but OEM updates are only half of the picture since now many parts of Android can be updated independently even longer than iOS. With big players like Samsung promising 3-4 years of updates, and Google working hard to further modularize Android, the future is looking bright.

It's a shame there aren't any more stock Android tablets

It's a real shame Google have up on Android tablets in general I recently picked up a Tab S and installed Crdroid and was able to update the Android version to Android 10.

It runs suprisingly well considering the age and is a similar experience to the pixel C . It's like a modern version of a nexus 9 which is great
