3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 172) Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:30 AM PDT Welcome back, fellow Android gamers, to a special "offline-playable" version of my weekly mobile gaming recommendations based on the most interesting games I played last week :) This episode covers a fun zombie-shooting FPS that truly took me by surprise, a new deckbuilding dungeon-crawler RPG, and a challenging neon-style tower defense game. Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below. New to these posts? Check out the first one from 172 weeks ago here. The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is. Let's get to the games:The Walking Zombie 2 [Game Size: 384 MB] (free)Genre: Shooter / Action-adventure / Indie / Action - Offline Playable Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Full tl;dr review: The Walking Zombie 2 is a large offline-playable action-adventure FPS with story-driven missions and side-quests, set in a low-poly post-apocalyptic world. The core gameplay has us acquire new missions by talking to NPCs at our small camp and then travel to the mission locations from the world map. These missions often include gathering resources needed for survival and shooting hordes of zombies with our range of weapons. The core gameplay is fun and surprisingly well-made, but where the game really shines is in its RPG elements that allow us to heavily customize our character through lots of unique skills and perks as we progress. Skills may increase our firearms or melee damage, or even improve our trading or speech proficiency, which decreases the price of goods and allows us to acquire more quests from NPCs respectively. Perks, on the other hand, may improve our reloading speed, allow us to gain XP faster, and much more. While the art-style is average, the clean and minimalistic UI help create a nice, uninterrupted, gameplay experience. To my big surprise, some of the cut-scenes are even fully voiced, and there's a karma system that rewards or punishes us depending on which decisions we make. The Walking Zombie 2 monetizes through frequent forced ads, a $3.99 iAP to remove these ads, and additional iAPs for better weapons, extra skill points, and other items that make it faster to complete the game. Fortunately, none of the iAPs are necessary to enjoy the game at all. There is, however, a fuel system that limits how much we can travel between missions in one play session. While I didn't expect much from this game, the depth of its gameplay very positively surprised me. If you can pay to remove the annoying ads, the game is an easy recommendation. Google Play: Here MiniReview link: Here Card Hog [Total Game Size: 97 MB] (free)Genre: Deckbuilding / Dungeon-crawler / Card / Indie - Offline Playable Orientation: Portrait Required Attention: Some tl;dr review: Card Hog is a turn-based deckbuilding dungeon-crawler with a core gameplay loop inspired by Dungeon Cards and Look, Your Loot! Our goal is to get as far as possible into a dungeon consisting of a 4x3 playing-field full of cards, with our hero placed in the middle. From thereon, we tap adjacent cards to move around and interact with the cards around us, which include weapon, potion, currency, or monster cards. If we have less HP than an enemy's attack power when we attack it, we die and have to start a new game from scratch. Between playthroughs, we can pick another of the seven different heroes for our next adventure, or buy permanent upgrades using a special currency gained by doing side-quests. With three game-modes and dungeons that are procedurally generated, the game offers a decent amount of replayability, not to mention that unlocking all heroes and 100 cards takes a while. This progression helps keep the game interesting beyond the first few playthroughs. The art-style is simple but humorous and polished. My only complaint is that the very short tutorial doesn't introduce some of the most important core gameplay systems, which may cause some confusion until you've played a few rounds. Card Hog monetizes through occasional forced ads between play-sessions and infrequent incentivized ads, both of which can be removed through a single $1 iAP. Google Play: Here MiniReview link: Here Radiant Defense [Game Size: 14 MB] (free)Genre: Tower Defense - Offline Playable Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Full tl;dr review: Radiant Defense is a challenging 15-level tower defense game that lets us place walls to alter the route our enemies will be forced to take – something we use to our advantage to get the most out of our towers. With a few special buildings and nine towers that can be leveled up, the game feels like a very traditional tower defense game. The only thing I'm missing is an option to select which types of enemies our towers should target, which is a feature I've gotten used to in most other games in the genre. The neon art-style and special effects perfectly combine with the music to create a uniquely atmospheric experience that feels very polished, and the controls are as simple as can be. Surprisingly, the entire game only takes up 14 MB of space, which means it can run on any potato of a smartphone. Radiant Defense is free to play, monetizing only through four $1.99 iAPs that unlock new towers and buildings. Due to the game's difficulty, some of these purchases are almost required to be able to finish the game, but once bought, they at least turn the game into a premium experience. Help to find games that can replace my habit of scrolling through social media apps Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:32 AM PDT Hello guys, as mentioned in the title I have a bad habit of opening social media when I have no clue what to do on my phone, and it is kinda annoying, so I even got rid of all social media except Reddit and I don't want to delete this one too, so help me find a game that is just causal. Something that I can play while I am waiting for someone or while talking to someone, which doesn't really require my full attention. Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
Can't find new games? Consider other options other than just searching in the Play Store! Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:48 AM PDT Lately I was looking for new games to play but couldn't find anything interesting. I dedicated an entire week on searching the best games to play on a GBA emulator and made a list with a little help from the GBA subreddit community. I decided to go with GBA games instead of NDS or PSP ones because they are more simple and easy to play on a phone. There are also a lot of good NDS games, but the fact that you have to use two screens sometimes really annoys me. Hope it helps! [link] [comments]
Doubting lifespan of multiplayer games? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 06:32 AM PDT Good day /r/AndroidGaming Where do you find statistics of app population? At what point do you when scrolling on the Play Store make the swift judgement that you will invest time and potentially money into the game/to the devs. I understand we have public information of ratings and downloads, but are we limited at that? Survival games that aren't pay to win/pay to progress? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:43 PM PDT I'm mainly looking for a survival game where I can do stuff like forage for materials/equipment and level up my character. I've looked through the more mainstream titles like State of Survival, etc. but most reviews seem to say that those games are hard to progress in once you reach a wall, which heightens the need for MTX. The game I liked the most would have to be Day R Survival. I like that there's a story, foraging and crafting and leveling up/character progression, but the game is looking pretty grind heavy. Help me find this old Android game. Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:38 PM PDT I used to play this way back in 2012-13. There was a spaceship which you had to pass through translucent rectangular hoops. The color of the hoops changed to red if you couldn't pass through them. It was a gyro based game. The color scheme of the game was neon bluish and except the road the surroundings were void. The levels were pre defined and not procedurally generated. At the end of a level you were given the score as a percentage. The size of the game was around 5-6 mb. It was not by a major studio or anything. I believe it was removed from the play store later on. The icon, iirc, had the blue spaceship. Also, it had only one tune which played on all the levels. Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:40 AM PDT picked up a mad catz mojo off ebay US $42.00. I have been looking into what i should use for storage, not sure if i should go for external HD or USB thumb stick. If i went external HD i guess it would be worth it for usb hub? haven't figured out if the 2.0 slot works better for roms or the 3.0, I've read people leave the controller dongle in the 3.0 for better results [link] [comments]
Any way to save user data for games? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:15 AM PDT I like to play a wide variety of games, including puzzle games that when added up take a lot of space on my device. So I would like to uninstall apps/games but keep user data/save so I wouldn't have to worry about unlocking levels again/go through the entire game again. Anyway to do this or prevent the system from uninstalling save data? [link] [comments]

Similar, paid, side scroller hack n slash/rpg games similar to ArcaneSoul? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 06:11 PM PDT Hello, I'm on the hunt for new games. Before we had Magia Charma Saga and Dragon Spear, but both of them are now pc only. So, I'm looking for this kind of 2D/2.5D, side scrolling hack n slash, with rpg elements (level up with exp, equipment...), similar to Dungeon Fighter Online. I already know about Grimvalor, Implosion, Maplestory M, Arcane Quest Legends, Wayward Souls, Dawn Break... Also, no roguelikes, please. Is there anything similar? Thanks in advance! Are there any games like Mini Metro? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 02:43 PM PDT Mini Metro will never leave my phone but just curious is there anything similar. It doesn't have to be metro related but something with this minimal, zen approach and dedicated developers. It can be premium definitely. Thank you. [link] [comments]
Looking for a "collect them all" puzzler with leveling up/skill system Posted: 29 Apr 2021 02:54 PM PDT Games I've loved: Crash Fever, Dungeon Link (rip), Disney Emoji Blitz, Clockmaker Is there anything in the realm like the games I've loved above? I really enjoy games that are semi-gacha but still allow players to collect characters rewarding them for their play time and have timed events to collect event-specific rewards. I've tried a bunch of RPG puzzlers like Puzzle Quest, P&D, or 1000000 but could never really get into them; they all felt too slow or the graphics just weren't my cup of tea (I enjoy the anime stuff more) Looking forward to any recommendations! Is there a game like Sims but set in the past like medieval times? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 12:56 PM PDT Something like Sims but set in a different time period of the past. Where you get to build and customize your land or town or castle and stuff like that? [link] [comments]
[Controller REVIEW] ipega Golden Warrior Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:24 AM PDT So, I picked this thing up for £13 off eBay, new. I like it, so I'm gonna share my thoughts. Skip to the TLDR if you don't care about the specifics. Analog sticks: 10/10 Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. No deadzone issue like other ipega controllers. Super precise. Do have a little bit of resistance to them, so it may be worth it to get some thumb grips for extra precision in shooting games. I also have fat thumbs so I'm gonna get some Dualshock 4 ones as, for the most part, feel almost identical to the Dualshock 4 analog sticks. ABXY: 8/10 The buttons have this really nice LED glow to them (which I don't think can be turned off, but I wouldn't turn them off anyways. Not a problem even at night). I did notice that they do have a little more travel than most, but I like that. Think, Xbox 360 face buttons with the tactical feel of Dualshock 3. They all have an identical feel as well. I did notice that there's about a millimeter of extra space before they meet the rubber pads beneath them and if you shake it they will rattle very slightly, but when gaming this has never been an issue. D-Pad: 7/10 I hate it and I love it. I noticed that the left input feels slightly mushier than the rest (possibly just my unit) and they all have the sort of tactile feedback that the dualshock controllers have (which I'm not a fan of, I prefer the Vita's clicky D-pad by far). It comes with a changeable plate, but the spare one is worse in my opinion. Default one has a good feel to it once you get used to it. The plastic does feel cheaper on the spare d-pad plate, whereas the gold default one feels much better in my opinion. The whole thing can push down if you press on the middle - this is absolutely brilliant for fighting games. Also works if you push one button down and rock across, making it really easy to alternate between left and right. For any Tekken fans, crouch dashing has never been easier. It may seem hard to believe from the look of it but it is ridiculously precise. And no more damn corners slicing into your thumb. Shoulder buttons: 6/10 L1 and R1 are very clicky but definitely a little too loud. The triggers feel pretty good, though I don't think they're analog, as the slightest press seems to set them off (may just be the games I'm playing) though this has been pretty useful since there's hardly a delay in COD mobile. I did notice that the L2 button didn't feel like it was hitting anything when pressed all the way (hard to describe, but R2 definitely feels like it's hitting a frame which is good, whereas L2 sort of just slows to a stop, which feels weird sometimes). There's also a home button used for pairing and powering the device off. Ergonomics: 9/10 This thing feels REALLY nice in the hands. There's a really nice heft to it (I think it weighs literally the same as a Dualshock 4). One thing I don't understand is why the rubberised handles aren't rubberised on the back, where I'd mostly prefer it, but they pretty much only make contact with your thumb and half of your palm. Not a deal-breaker, still feels great. I have pretty big hands, and I have had literally no problem using this thing for hours. No cramps, soreness or anything. It also supports vibration (nice, deep rumble) and will do so each time you pair. There's also an unfoldable clasp to mount your phone in - though if you've got a power button that is dead centre on the side of your phone, it'll press it down, so you might want to try a controller that wraps around the sides of your phone. It can move gradually but tends to lock in 2 positions - 90° and about 150°. I wish it would lock in somewhere between those two, or go completely flat, as my phone is pretty heavy (220g) and folded out all the way it does feel slightly top heavy (isn't hard to overcome, can just hold it so my phone is vertical or I rest my arms on my desk). Pairing/Setup: 6/10 This took a short while to get my head around, but it's actually pretty simple. There's a couple modes. Home+A for Windows and games where you have to custom-map buttons (for me, that's COD mobile). You'll need to use the shooting plus v3 app. Just clear the screen, and press each button you want to use and drag it where you want it. In COD Mobile I made the buttons I don't touch the screen for transparent for better immersion. Home+Y for iOS And home+X for a standard android gamepad mode. It doesn't detect it automatically in some games, but still works usually. Tried and tested it in sky children of the light and had no issues. This is also the one you want to use for emulation However, I looked at the manual again about 15mins ago and it says to install a driver from octopus, which I haven't done. Will update when I do. One thing I don't like is that to switch modes, you have to unpair, then do the Home button combination, then repair. However, takes about 5 seconds, and this thing pairs lightning fast. Once it's paired, an LED will hover across 1, 2, 3 or 4 to show which mode you're in. (4 isn't a mode, it's a charging indicator). It doesn't really break immersion since to do this you'd be switching games anyway. Charging and battery life: 5/5 (less credit as it's less important) Recommended 0.5A 5V, but for batteries rated this way I've always used 1A 5V with no problems ever (standard iPhone charger). It took about 2 hours to fully charge, and the battery hasn't died since I charged it 3 days ago, after several hours of gaming. The 4th light blinks slowly as it charges, rapidly when the battery is low, and stays solid when fully charged. Overall/TLDR: 8.3/10 This controller is definitely worth the price I paid. I don't like the gold so I'll probably paint it red if I tear this apart, but even if I paid more, I'd be satisfied. If you do get this controller, I've left the instructions to pair and set it up under the pairing section. Some small issues that I didn't like and it isn't as widely supported as a DS4 controller will be, but it's a damn good controller. If I can fix the issues with the L2 response and Left d-pad buttons after a teardown, I'll update you guys. If I can, this'll probably bump to a 9. [link] [comments]
