Seeking help - preparation for Staff Android level roles related interviews ?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 08:02 AM PST

I have 16+ years of software engineering and technical leadership experience, that includes 9+ years specializing only in Android. Also, I am a work-visa immigrant residing in the US.

A lot of my Android experience has been with brown-field projects, as an hourly contractor, at large enterprises and corporations, existing monolithic code-bases that required maintenance, bug-fixing, production-bug fixing, very minimalist new-code product-feature development and such. I missed the learning-train for Dagger, RxJava etc etc. Almost have never used any modern android development practices or allowed to refactor. Large enterprise operations teams don't fix what's not broken, until more budget gets allocated. As a contractor, irrespective if I were the Subject Matter Expert, Domain-expert, Product-feature list expert etc etc, it's still a contractor role, and none of the corporations would sponsor a work-visa. Even my current project is 200% java, and i have been studying Kotlin only in my spare-time for personal benefits, just want to be prepared for when an opportunity arises, so not really professional experience.

i need help one-on-one for being able to present myself as a Staff level engineer. I think I am a staff-level engineer, but if I fail to convey that correctly in interviews, then i won't be able to get the offer. Do Staff-level engineers know it all, have experienced it all, professionally ? Is 10X engineer a myth, a legend, or a reality ? Do only 10X engineers become Staff Engineers ? Can i prepare, improve my skills to be regarded as a 10X / at least a Staff ? Or is it a built-in personality trait ? My core problem is "general awareness", and I want to overcome that cluelessness so I can help myself, and I need some mentoring in that regard.

Deploy apps with personal account VS GSuite account

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:54 AM PST

I have all my applications deployed in my personal account, but recently I have been wondering if this is the best way to do business.

My intention is to live off my applications, and recently I have been thinking about the advantages of having my entire professional life in a GSuite account instead of my personal account, the advantages that I see are the following:

    * If for any reason my personal account is suspended by Google, my professional account with my applications will not be affected.

    * In the same way, if my professional account was suspended, my personal account would not be affected.

    * In the event that the professional account is suspended, in principle, being a paying client you have better access to Google support (I have never been a GSuite admin but I imagine that is the case).

What are your thoughts on this matter?

How long do app reviews in general take?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 03:06 AM PST

New to android. I made a closed test (for a simple app) that's been "In Review" for a few hours. Does it always take that long? And what about prod-reviews? Is there a big difference (time-wise)?

Potential Reasons for Extremely Low Acquisition Rate?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:09 AM PST

Three months ago I published a single player game for Android on Google Play. Since then, the store listing has a relatively low acquisition rate of 1.17%. This low rate would put the app well below its peers, as according to the Google Play Developer Console the 50th percentile for acquisition rates amongst similar apps in the Action category is 15.57%.

Has anybody else's apps experienced this issue? Any ideas for what might be causing such a low acquisition rate? I'm looking to do some A/B testing with the store listing, but frankly I'm not even sure where to start given that the current acquisition rate is so low and I'm not aware of any major issues with the listing.

Here is a link to the store listing:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilhelmdevelopment.specialops

The app has screenshots, a feature graphic, and a promo video that I made (and that I think look somewhat professional, but there's definitely room for improvement since I'm not a graphic designer). The app does have ratings (just 5 as of now), but has only one or two written reviews.

I have a couple ideas for what might be hurting the acquisition rate. I think the lack of written reviews for most languages probably isn't helping (but this is kind of a chicken and the egg problem).

I also think it's possible that Google Play has misclassified the app as a First Person Shooter game instead of a Top Down Shooter (as the Google Play Console has listed a First Person Shooter game as a peer). I'm thinking that people might be clicking on the store listing, realizing that it's not a First Person Shooter, and then leaving the app listing without downloading. The store listing does not use the words "first" or "person", so I'm not sure if there's anything else that could be done to fix this potential problem.

Any ideas, feedback, or general comments would be greatly appreciated!

    Help understanding ViewModelFactory

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:27 PM PST

I'm doing this Google Codelab and don't really understand what it's saying about the purpose of the ViewModelFactory. I also don't completely understand the code provided. Can someone dumb it down for me?

    override fun <T : ViewModel?> create(modelClass: Class<T>): T { if (modelClass.isAssignableFrom(ScoreViewModel::class.java)) { return ScoreViewModel(finalScore) as T } throw IllegalArgumentException("Unknown ViewModel class")

    }

    Mobdro removal and sdk

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:49 AM PST

So Mobdro was a pretty neat app to watch stuff online, and few days ago they just disappeared and got deleted from everything. Their main monetisation was either showing you ads, or sharing your traffic with Luminati proxy services
If you check the source code of Mobdro that was deleted 2 days ago you can find literally EVERY APP that has luminati sdk

    com.coconuttec.teenpatti com.coconuttec.teenpatti.klub com.coconuttec.teenpatti.klub.offline com.desoline.android.pdfreader com.desoline.pdfscanner com.desoline.proxy.vpn com.greentower.topbox com.labcave.robberraceescape com.mobdro.android com.newsbooks.firestick com.newsbooks.home com.peel.app com.play.tv com.playnet.androidtv.free com.tb.ffhqtv com.worldmapatlas.maps.onezoneapps.worldmapatlas dev.ylan.app me.hd.streamz net.hd.streamz org.hola org.hola.huawei org.speedspot.speedanalytics org.speedspot.speedspotspeedtest tr.org.appuniverse.musplay tv.peel.app tv.peel.oem.app tv.peel.samsung.app tv.peel.smartremote z.vpn.free.proxy

Simple google search shows that most of them are banned from google play store for being a malware, suspicious behaviour or dmca

it seems that its pretty risky to add their sdk to your app as you will most likely get banned

Android WebView undesired auto-scroll to anchor

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:01 PM PST

I have a strange case and would need some advice.

I have to open a web page inside an Android WebView. When the page has opened, an anchor is automatically added to the URL (#home) to make sure it's scrolled to the top.

We have items on the page, and when the user clicks on them, we get back a deeplink and navigate to the native screen. When the user closes that native screen, we show the WebView activity from the stack. With the first interaction, the WebView automatically scrolls to the top. This interaction can be any touch event, and the automatic scroll to the top only happens when the user taps the WebView.

The web page has a carousel with items, and they stay at the same position when the user navigates back from the native page to the WebView. I added logs to see if we update the page after the user returns to the WebView. But I don't see any events being triggered, and the carousel items are not changing the positions. So for me, it doesn't look that the page is reloaded.

Did any of you encounter a similar problem? Wher there is an auto-scroll to the top when WebView activity comes back to the top?

    Android dev using WSL2?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:31 PM PST

Hi all I'd like to do some android development.

Ideally I write all my code on PC (it currently builds/run properly on windows/mac/linux). It's basically pure C++ (no exceptions/rtti). I don't really want an emulator. I mostly want to either A) compile and not run, just to see if there's build errors B) Connect my phone and confirm manually that it runs properly

What's the best way to do this? I was thinking about using SDL2 for my GUI but I never had luck getting that to run on android. Is libgdx easier to get up and running? (I never used that lib before). I have 0 idea how to do any sort of android development.

Should I use WSL2? A lot of build instructions assume you're on linux. I have an old PC in my basement I can ssh into so if it's easier to use a non virtual linux I can do that too. I'm not too worried about getting my code to work I'm mostly worried if I can get all the libs to compile and run (I use c++, curl and plan to use either sdl or gdx for gui). Not a tall order but I never had a working android app before using C++

Appyjump vs Admob for ad revenue. Which is best?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:32 PM PST

Hey everyone. Is anyone familiar with Appyjump as an ad network? I will be monetizing a bit of content and I have to choose between Appyjump and Admob. I don't see any clear comparison between the two, other than a few articles that suggest Appyjump is worthwhile, while others never mention it. Can anyone give any insight on whether Appyjump is any good?

    App publish

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:31 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm ready to publish my app. I have only 2 concerns, first is it worth to upload it and make revenue from ads and secondly I read a lot of suspension of accounts and that the app once published can't be deleted anymore. What is your thoughts about it ? I would love some feedback!
