My Philips TV updated to Android 9 last week

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:56 PM PST

Don't even use Android TV, casting from my phone is easier. Mostly use TV as UHD computer monitor.

I didn't notice much difference. It's hard to find info on Android TV 9 using Google. Strange results like TV Guide app or Android TV on Raspberry Pi.

Here's the Philips announcement from last year: When will my Philips Android television update to Android 9? | Philips

If you have a Philips Android Television that came with Android 8.0, your television will be updated to Android 9.0 later this year, in Q3 2020. Philips televisions that came with Android 8.0 can be identified by a model number ending in 504/F7, 604/F7 or 704/F7.

How do you rearrange the app icons running down the lift side of the screen below the red Apps icon?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 08:06 AM PST

For the life of me, I can't figure this out. I see where one can arrange the apps running across the screen, but I don't see any option for rearranging or adding to the ones running down the left, which show you what's available on the app, etc.

[Firefox TV][FIX] Menu button issues on Firefox TV is now solved!

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:10 AM PST

OK, So I may not be the first one to think of this, but I didn't see any other posts about this. So here is the solution I found!

    What you need

    • An Android TV device (duh)
    • A way of getting APK's installed
    • ADB (get this)
    • Firefox TV installed (APK or Google Play)
    • This version of button mapper Here (it has to be this one)

    Installation

    1. Install the file explorer (if you wish)
    2. Install Firefox TV
    3. Install the Button Mapper APK from above
    4. On your computer:
      1. Open Command Prompt and run adb connect <ip address> where <ip address> is your TV's IP address.
      2. Then run adb shell pm grant flar2.homebutton android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
    5. Back on the TV, Open button Mapper
    6. Choose settings
    7. If it does not go to the accessibility settings directly:
      1. Go to either "Settings > Preferences > Accessibility" or "Settings > System > Accessibility" depending on your TV hardware
    8. Click on Button Mapper
    9. Enable Button Mapper
    10. Say Yes/OK
    11. It should go straight to button mapper once enabled. If not, open button mapper.
    12. Choose the "Back" button
    13. Enable "Customize"
    14. go down to "Long Press"
    15. It should be selected on actions, if not, choose the drop-down menu and select actions.
    16. Click the dropdown menu
    17. Choose "Advanced"
    18. Choose "Custom Keycode (ver 2)"
    19. Input "82" and choose "OK"
    20. Go back home and start "Firefox TV"
    21. Go to any website, then long-press the back button
    22. Tada! You are done!

You should now be able to access the menu option from any app, but more importantly, Firefox TV.

Let me know if I missed a step, or if I need to fix something. Enjoy!

Voice commands on Nvidia Shield 2017 pro remote don't work anymore. Any solution?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 09:45 AM PST

Hi, guys. This is something happened to several other people.

I can activate the voice command indicator but it won't hear at all.

Voice commands/Google Assistant on the controller instead just work fine.

I tried to fix it erasing the Google app cache or connecting it to usb port, as someone suggested, but it won't work. I also enabled the 'always on' feature on my remote.

Occasionally, it still works, but it's a 99% fail.

Tell me that someone found a solution, please

I am returning my CCwGTV and here is why

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:02 PM PST

After trying to get the new chromecast to work for a whole month, I am sending back this device. The home screen is littered with ads, even for services which I did not subscribe to. It does NOT show recommendations for anything non prime/netflix/disney. No arte, no plex, no local services (ARD/ZDF in Germany).

I have tried everything from tweaking buttons and installing different launchers but I cannot get it to work completely. Wolf Launcher gets rid of the ads and lag, but ambient mode doesn't work. The "apps only" mode is NOT A VIABLE OPTION. It forces you to use a row with maximum 20 apps (no columns??????) It still shows ads in full screen on the top. Assistant and ambient mode stop working. The only reason "apps only" exists is to kick the user right back into "ad mode".

These are all things that work on other android tv boxes and are deliberate decisions by Google. My house used a multitude of google products (like a ton of minis) but the new chromecast will not be one of them.
