| Posted: 06 Dec 2020 04:26 PM PST The Magic Home smartbulbs are cheap, and generally work well. I can lay in bed and, if the phone is unlocked, say "Turn on Lamp" and it turns on the floor lamp I have placed on the other side of the room. But the phone has to be unlocked, which makes it hugely less convenient. I can't just be laying in bed with the phone charging on the nightstand and give it the command. Google Assistant will say "Sure. But you have to unlock the phone first." Then I have to roll over, fumble in the dark, etc. Even Smart Home support couldn't help me, but I did find a trick to make it work: Assign it to a Google Assistant routine, which DO work when the phone is locked. Say "Hey Google, set up Routines" then tap the "Routines" button. Add a routine. Set up any trigger word you want, and make it so the routine turns the lamp on. Then add another one for turning it off. Now, to turn the lamp on, ALL I HAVE TO DO is say "Hey Google -- LUMINOS!" To turn it off? "Hey Google -- OBSCURUM!" Sharing just hoping to help someone else with this frustration! [link] [comments] | ||
| I took some photos with my midrange camera and compared them to my Pixel 5 Posted: 06 Dec 2020 05:56 AM PST Preamble I'm not even an amateur photographer, I mainly take photos of my kids. In low light and fast moving action, the dedicated camera is no contest, but just for general holiday snaps: The camera is an Olympus OMD10 with a 20mm F1.7 lens. I used to have a DSLR but sold it in favour of size. This combo can be had for about £500-600. Similar price to the phone outright. This isn't scientific just thought it would be interesting to compare photos straight out the camera and straight out the phone. Notes - The phone is a wider field of view, I tried to match some of the pictures, this comparison was taken in the morning at midday light, all photos were handheld. Photos These are the straight from the camera images, i've also added a RAW section, where I used the auto edit function in lightroom to increase the dynamic range of the camera (the pixel 5 uses auto HDR for most photos) Also, imgur has compressed the files (15MB for the camera and 6MB for the phone) to about 2-3MB These are in this order : Camera - Pixel - Camera edited RAW Here's the link to all images in order: EDIT Here's a photo cropped at 100% on each to show the sharpness difference between the cameras (make sure to zoom in). This isn't entirely fair as the pixel is a touch more zoomed out but you're free to zoom the other images. https://imgur.com/a/VanW3AM [link] [comments] | ||
