Old mobile java games still worth your time

Since my last post about "Rally Master Pro" was well received, I wanted to write about some old, java games which I believe are still relevant and highly worth your time in (soon to be) 2021. I tried my best not to be driven by nostalgia, so, obviously, as much as I loved games like Real Football 2006 or Gangstar 2, they didn't make the list (there's no reason to play Gangstar 2 when you've got a full-blooded GTA San Andreas on Android).

    How do I play those?

There are quite a few apps available at Google Store, but, luckily, the best one is both money and advert-free, J2ME Loader. You don't really need anything more.

    Where do I find them?

Those games can't be bought legally today (they are simply long-gone from the market), the platform which they run is obsolete, yet, if you ask the developers, I'm sure they would tell you it's against the law to use their intellectual property for free. So I won't give you any links, but I'll tell you there's this guy, last name Mil, first name Dedo, of house Dotnet.

As the years passed and phones developed, so did the screen sizes. While searching for the games, you'll realize they always come branded with 128x128, 128x160, 176x220, 240x320 or some other numbers. Those are screen resolutions and you want the best one, 240x320, preferably of Sony Ericsson, since SE K810i was the ultimate gaming phone back in the day. Some of the older games, which were released before 240x320 resolution came to pass, are obviously available only in 176x220 or 128x160. Also, you want the JAR file, not JAD.

How do I set them up?

    Follow the steps:

    1. Fire up the J2ME Loader. Press the three white dots in the upper-right corner, then "Settings", then uncheck "Enable ActionBar" and "Enable statusbar". Get back. Notice the red circle with a plus on it in the bottom-right corner. Press and locate your JAR file. After the installation is complete, press "Start". You'll see the settings menu.
    2. Adjust your settings to match the following:
      Screen options: 240x320
      Scale: 100
      Scale to fit: Check
      Keep aspect ratio: Check
Immediate processing mode: Check (it's needed for some games to work properly at full speed, turn off if your game crashes or behaves weird)
Graphics mode: HW acceleration (OpenGL ES) (again, if the game crashes or stutters, return back to "Software")
      Force fullscreen: Check
      Keyboard type: Phone
      Button shape: Rectangle
Haptic feedback: Check (this is optional, but is suggested as it gives you a nice feedback)
    3. Start.

This is what you should be seeing if you did everything accordingly.

    Games

    Stranded (Glu Mobile)

    Stranded

Group of people shipwrecked on a mysterious, deserted island. Apart from the main plot, where you uncover the secrets of the island (you are not alone), you are free to explore the island on your own, fish, hunt, grow fruits and vegetables, cook meals, trade, collect shells and a number of other things.

    Wolf Moon (Rovio)

    Wolf Moon

You play as a female police officer who got bitten by a werewolf and got wrongly accused for murder by her partner, so you run away into the wild. The hunters and their dogs are out to get you during the day, the wolves and werewolves during the night, as you try to lift the curse and clear your name before you turn into werewolf. Hunt for food, hide inside abandoned cabins and caves, collect wood for fire, upgrade your weapons, you can even drive a truck (and sleep in it).

CSI Miami, New York, Mobile Game, Blood on Campus (Gameloft)

    CSI: Miami

This is where Gameloft truly shone. Every CSI game is a gem on it's own, staying true to the TV series. Collect evidence, work in the lab, question suspects and enjoy all the unexpectable twists and turns while you are solving the case.

    Sola Rola (Eidos)

    Sola Rola

The best platformer out there. Nothing else to be said.

    Silent Hill (Konami)

    Silent Hill

Years ago, one night, every single child from now-abandoned orphanage died, apart from you. You return to the place to solve the mystery and the game is as unsettling as it sounds. There are two sequels, but they didn't manage to capture the atmosphere of the original.

    Wolfenstein RPG (EA Games)

    Wolfenstein RPG

Using the same engine which propelled Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves, Wolfenstein happens to be the best of them. The story, the humor, combat, levels, enemies, everything is a love letter to classic Wolfenstein games.

    Honorable mentions

    • Splinter Cell - Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory (Gameloft)
    • California Gold Rush (Digital Chocolate)
    • Playman Summer Games 3 (Mr. Goodliving)
    • Gravity Defied (Codebrew Software)

Looking for MMORTS with safe base

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 05:23 AM PST

So I'm looking for an MMORTS like Clash of clans and others, but with a twist, I don't want anybody to attack my base and get constantly crushed by veterans or big spenders, I still want pvp/pve content but outside my base, maybe on a contested territory where I can send units and join my alliance.

I've recently played this game called Hades star where your base is never attacked, and instead you join instanced pve/pvp content, would love something similar, is there a game similar to clash of clans like that?

    More premium games need Demos.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:39 PM PST

I don't think it should be a requirement but a goal for devs to offer a trial/demo for their games. I know I would be more inclined to make more purchases if I could try it before I by it.

Help me find a game pls.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:11 AM PST

Hello all, I am looking for a game to keep me busy during downtime. I've tried the hero collection genre and I like afk arena as far as game mechanics go. yes I know there are points in the game where progress stops to force people to buy gems etc. I don't mind that or the auto combat. I tried raid Shadow legends and loved the graphics and the art style, but boy is their system predatory. So tldr looking for a game similar to afk arena but with more realistic graphics. I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks everyone and have a fine New year!

Slice & Dice: An awesome roguelite dice game in early access on the playstore.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:05 PM PST

Found this a few days ago and have been playing a lot.

Basically you have five characters and each one rolls a six sided dice that determines what move they will perform. Monsters you fight use the same rules.

Throughout the game you gain relics and your characters level up and change classes, changing the abilities on your dice.

Overall an awesome free game. I've made it to level 17 si far. Thought I would share this here cause I've never seen it posted about before.

I'd post a link, but since it's in beta I cannot find the share button.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:04 AM PST

So I bought a ROG Phone II a few months ago and I just bought the ROG Kunai a few weeks ago but when I checked the Game Genie, it doesn't have the key mapper option so now I need to use a 3rd party key mapper to use my controller in other games.

So which game pad key mapped would you guys recommend?

What are the software/tools I need for developing 2D android games?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:04 AM PST

I think I need to learn C# and use Unity to develop 2D android games like Angry Birds, Bubble Ball, etc. I'm not sure about what code editor to use. I figured that I'll use Visual Studio 2019 but that's slow AF and really annoying. My questions are:

    1. Is C# and Unity the best option or is there something better?
    2. What are the best alternatives for Visual Studio 2019? Something that's not outdated.
    3. Are these software/tools free?
    4. How much will it cost to develop a 2D android game and launch/market it on the Play Store?
    5. What are some good free resources for me to learn this?

    Thanks for your answers

[REQUEST] Physics-based games that are entirely ad- and microtransaction-free.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:13 PM PST

So, this is really originating from me wanting to enjoy Angry Birds 1 without one single ad, paywall, or interruption. Is there such a thing as a physics game that:

•Can be played completely ad-free for no more than $5? •Isn't somehow limited after I pay to remove ads? (Like, where you still have to do microtransactions after you paid to remove ads in order to see/beat the whole game? •Has compelling gameplay? 2 good examples of compelling physics games are Psebay and Where's My Water. •Isn't just a demonstration or sandbox?

I hope this doesn't come off as banal. I'm really trying to find a true gem or two that I've never heard of. Where's My Water was absolutely excellent when it first came out. Now, it's marred with too much bullcrap. I'm hoping to have a new, similar experience to when I first played it. Thank you for your help.
