Android Questions: Is 20-80% full really the best for battery?

Is 20-80% full really the best for battery?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:43 AM PDT

Having switched phones recently (from Honor 8 to Pixel 3a) I've started to wonder if the practice I picked up at some point somewhere - putting the phone on the charger at 20% and removing when it's at 80% - is really the best for keeping the battery in working order for as long as possible?

Now, I get the part that modern batteries are rated in charge cycles (so whether you charge 5 or 50% does not really matter), I understand that you should not allow the battery to deplete completely, and it makes sense that you don't charge to 100% (the last percentages take long and the extra time on the higher temperature that charging causes is not worth it), but is the 20-80% really the optimal? More specifically - if I'm using only 60% of the capacity then I'll also be charging more often. And that, logically, should wipe the benefits I get from less time/temp on a charger. Or not?

In summary, I'm looking for comments on fellow redditors' experience on the subject. So, hopefully, the phone would be still usable in 5 years without requiring charging every couple of hours...

How do i uninstall pre-installed apps?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 08:03 AM PDT

I am very new to the smartphone world. Having used a silly flip phone forever, I was forced to upgrade. I don't even know what kind of phone it is. It was the cheapest thing I could find through tracfone (I so rarely call or text). I know it's android, and the logo is ZTE. Best I can tell ya.
I managed to uninstall some things. It takes me to the Google Play, and I just hit "uninstall" and it's gone. But other apps don't uninstall. Chrome, for instance, takes me through that same routine but doesn't uninstall.

There's a lot of crap on the phone I will never use, and some pretty cool apps I'd like to try out, but, being the cheap phone it is, space is limited. Which leads to a second question I guess. I have 1.9 GB memory, and 16.00 GB storage (not sure the difference). I suspect that's not much, right?

Anyway, if anybody can address my stupid smartphone issues, it would be greatly appreciated!

I found this on my phone "Trusted Credentials".

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:12 AM PDT

So ever since I got my phone, it works perfectly well except for snapchat (Login temporarily failed, try again later). At some this year I reset the phone and SC worked again up until I did another reset and now I have the same issue as before. Just now I was looking around in the settings and found a trusted credentials option with a bunch of weird features (i think? Ex: Digital signature trust co. DST root CA X3) enabled and when I disabled all of them I lost access to the internet and I tried enabling a few and it worked again and now I am wondering if these credentials or wtvr have anything to do with snapchat not working?

According to snapchat my phone is rooted but when I use the superuse thing to check if it is it always says no your phone is not rooted. So what do I do I am not very savvy on these type of things but I'd really like to start using snapchat again so help please?

P.S: I realized I cant attached a pic to show you the credential thingies sooo ...

Invisible notification (sound only), when Bluetooth enabled.

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 09:12 AM PDT

    Very frustrating...

I have no (active) paired devices. But, if I have Bluetooth enabled, and I'm at the home location, I get a constant (once per minute) default notification sound... Except, there's no new notification! Additionally, there's nothing under "notification Settings" (e.g. something showing up as "just now" notified).

Turning off Bluetooth immediately fixes it.

    WTF?!

    I've tried:

    • unpairing all the "home" specific devices that are powered on... (bluetooth home phoneset, TV
    • unpairing un-needed devices (leaving just 3: my car, a headset, and a boombox - all of which are off atm).
    • rebooting while at home location.

Any thought on what I should do to further troubleshoot? As it stands, I have to leave Bluetooth off, or it drives me batty. :(

    Technical details:

    • Samsung Galaxy S10 (SM-G973W)
    • Android version 10 (kernel 4.14.117-18725736)
    • latest software updates (security patch Aug 1, 2020)

How do I get to the Launcher's home page with one Action/Gesture?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:05 PM PDT

Device: Pixel 3A OS: Android 11 (No custom ROM) Launcher: Microsoft Launcher Carrier: T-Mobile

I have most of my important stuff on the launcher default page and have been using the "Double tap home button" action (I use 3-button navigation) to go there. Single pressing the home button leads to the launcher page that was last open (this is with Microsoft Launcher as well as Pixel Launcher)

Is there a way to create a simple gesture/action that would lead directly to the launcher's home page?

    Spoofing network location?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I want to trick an app into thinking I'm in Salt Lake City (I'm in rural Utah). The app uses network location instead of GPS. How can I spoof my network location? Was thinking a proxy server but the advanced settings tell me it will likely only work for the browser. Using a Huawei Honor 7x with the latest EMUI version.

What's a good free app for identifying what is eating up space on my internal memory and efficiently getting rid of them?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 10:33 AM PDT

I have a an Android 10 smartphone with 32 GB internal memory and 32GB SD card. Now I only have a handful of apps and a total of like 3GB of music, photos and other things. Yet, the internal memory keeps on regularly showing that its full.

Can someone suggest an app that will help me identify what is eating up the storage and reduce clogging accordingly?

    Suggestion for full app backup.

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 09:34 AM PDT

So my tablet is at it's limit. It now begs for wipe out. As far I remember android defult backup only useful for media files. I need to backup iGO navigation app with all saved routes in it. I heard of Titanium Backup but if remember correctly it only works with root. What else I can use?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 08:49 AM PDT

I can't seem to use the microphone in any other app except the sound recorder app (the one that was pre-installed), and whenever i record a video with the camera app or with other app(whatsapp) When i try to send a voice note in any other app (Facebook, Whatsapp), it doesn't record what i say, like if the microphone was broken.

    I have a ZTE Z958(ZMAX 2) running android 5.1.

What do you guys think the problem is, my mic working but in some apps it doesn't.

New Pixel 4a. I keep having an issue in Chrome where the keyboard doesn't come up when I click on typeable fields

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 04:34 AM PDT

For example I'm trying to log into paypal, I can see the cursor in both username and password when I click on them, but they keyboard isn't coming up.

It's an intermittent problem that's typically fixed by restarting chrome, but that's not always practical, eg I'm at the tail end of a sign up process right now.

Notification bar invisible when exiting landscape apps?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 07:57 AM PDT

    Pixel 3a on Android 11.

I've noticed that when exiting landscape apps, the notification bar will not be visible on the homescreen until actively swiping down to see it. Happens on both Pixel launcher and Nova.

Is this a bug anyone else is experiencing?

My phone suspends after 10 mins of inactivity, can I switch it to Never?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 03:59 AM PDT

Hello, new here, would appreciate any help

My phone is a Xiaomi Redmi 9, and I have pretty limited knowledge of apps/modifications.

I was wondering why I can make it so the phone never suspends due to inactivity time, as I have seen a friend with a Xiaomi 8 do it but I can only chose between 12s, 30s,... 5 min and 10min.

Is there a way to do this? Are there any apps i can use?

    Thank you!

How to prevent Twitter accounts I follow from appearing in phone's contacts?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 03:45 PM PDT

Some Twitter accounts that I followed started appearing in my phone Contacts (People app on HTC) for some reason. I do not have it set to link accounts or to import Twitter accounts into Contacts or anything like that but it's doing it anyway.

I even tried unfollowing the Twitter accounts in question, but they remain in the phone's contacts anyway. Clicking them or long pressing them shows there is no way to delete or hide them from the contacts, so they are just there cluttering up the contacts with no way to remove them.

Is there a way to get rid of them so they stop showing up in there? I don't have many contacts and don't want all of the Twitter accounts in there making things messy and unorganized.

Can android phones measure (not guesstimate) battery current, and is there an app to measure its capacity using it?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:58 AM PDT

I've seen an App called Ampere. I haven't been able to find where it is getting its data from, but its current measurement givers *very* ballpark figures, so it's probably guesstimating or using system's guesstimates.

If getting real measured discharge current is possible, is there app which would use it to measure capacity?

    borrowing someone's phone

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:15 AM PDT

i'm borrowing my father's phone for several months. how do I fully migrate everything without losing any data? I logged in to my google account and all the other accounts and I saved his contacts in a vcf file. I didn't delete his google account from the phone (in settings) so his account pops up when I open some apps like the play store. I preformed a takeout for his data and had them sent to his email but I don't know if that's enough. I saved his files on his sd card and I installed my own but I didn't delete any of his data that's still on the phone because I want it to be there when I eventually give the phone back

    thanks

University email (under gmail) doesn't get added to device

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 05:57 AM PDT

I've been trying to add my university email (which opens under gmail on my PC) to my device for me to access it via the gmail app. The sign in was fine, I was brought to a embedded browser for me to enter my login details, but after logging in, the browser goes to the gmail page i.e. not the gmail app. The account doesn't get registered on my phone either. Just a note, I did this on a OnePlus 6 and 7T Pro, and they both don't work.
