How to force WiFi for one server while using mobile data for everything else?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:10 AM PDT

Generally: if I'm connected to both WiFi and mobile data, is there any way to control which connection is used per host?

Specifically: I have two servers on a local WiFi network that I want to connect to. One is a NAS, the primary goal. Currently the WiFi network has no internet access, but I have told Android to connect to it anyway, and it does.

I also have a mobile data connection with internet access.

The problem is that when connected to both, trying to access my (W)LAN by any means times out and fails. Disabling mobile data restores access to the LAN.

My NAS is located at 10.0.0.244, so is there a way to route connection by subnet or IP?

I'm using an Essential PH-1 with Android 10 (stock, rooted), connected to Verizon for mobile data and a Belkin home router/AP. I use a Pi Hole on the LAN for local DNS, DHCP, and some other minor services.

If an app has the option to uninstall it(device not rooted), it's safe to uninstall it, right?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:22 AM PDT

A few days ago I was removing some unnecessary applications from my device and now I fear I might have removed some essential application. My device isn't rooted so I cannot uninstall system apps. I was actually removing some preinstalled apps which were not system apps. So they cannot be called bloatware. If an app has the option to uninstall it it's probably safe to do so, right?

Where would I go to get educated about android phone developments in the last 4 years?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 08:21 AM PDT

I bought a Galaxy s7 edge back in 2016 and promptly stopped paying attention to new developments.

Where would I get up to speed on what's new and good? Ideally some kind of large "primer" type post, like "State of Smartphones 2020" would be great.

Are there new technologies to care about? Apps/features? Some have 5g, but some carriers have "fake" 5g?

For example, I did a quick search on Samsung phones, and there are like a dozen all with near-identical names. Same with other major brands. Any help in parsing all that?

    Thanks in advance.

"Google" app on Android 11 using 5.17 GB of "User Data" storage space - Pixel 3a

Pixel 3a - Android 11, September Patches, most recent app update

    Is this a bug?

EDIT: I have downloaded podcasts through the "Google Podcasts" App. "Google Podcasts" doesn't have that much listed storage space usage? Is the "Google" app user data coming from other apps?

Recent apps gesture on Android 11

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:04 AM PDT

I recently upgraded my Pixel 4a to Android 11. Now it seems like the "swipe up and hold" gesture to open the recent apps screen is very unreliable. Sometimes it just refuses to work, and when it does work I have to hold it for longer (like 5 seconds, whereas it used to be like 1-2). It also seems like it's nearly impossible to perform that gesture from the home screen now too.

Anyone else having this problem? Any way to fix it?

Bluetooth not turning on on Samsung Galaxy S7?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 08:59 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Been having issues with turning on Bluetooth on my Samsung Galaxy S7. The phone is about 4 years old but I've never actually used the Bluetooth. It's not paired with any other device. I try to turn the Bluetooth on and the switch goes on the 'on' position but doesn't actually turn on. It doesn't even look for devices. And then if I go to settings and try turn it on again, same thing happens. What should I do?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Bluetooth contact tracing: do android phones have bluetooth on by default?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 12:33 PM PDT

My local area (quebec) rejected bluetooth contact tracing because they thought bluetooth was a security risk. But my impression is that phones already have bluetooth turned on by default.

I know this is true for iphones: bluetooth is on by default 24/7 as soon as you get one out of the box. What about Android: do the system defaults have bluetooth as on, or off? And does this vary by manufacturer?

    Can't screenshot FB messenger

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 08:23 AM PDT

For whatever stupid reason, when I try to take a screenshot of a messenger conversation, Android 11 minimizes messenger. The messenger app has permission to use all files and the camera, so I don't know what the problem is. I regret downloading 11, at this point. There was nothing wrong with 10.

Cheap Suggestions for Used/Refurbished Android Handsets (UK)

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:15 AM PDT

    Afternoon All,

I'm looking for any suggestions on purchasing a second hand/refurbished Android Handset - my maximum budget is £40 and ideally I want that limit to include the cost of purchasing accessories for the handset as well i.e. case, mains charger, etc.

My budget is very limited due to unemployment and it will be used for running the NHS Covid 19 Apps for England & Scotland along with accessing emails, texting, phone calling & accessing online maps - note that it will be replacing an iPhone 5s Handset, which will be sold on once the replacement Android Handset is up & running.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

RE: Do IMEI repairs actually work?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 01:11 PM PDT

So four months ago I posted(on an account that is now suspended) here asking Do IMEI repairs actually work?

I went ahead and purchased it for my Galaxy S9. Communication was done over WhatsApp. Initially the seller told me that they would have to carry out the service later that night or the next day. A few hours later they messaged me back with instructions that included changing developer settings and connecting the phone to a internet connected computer. After about 45 minutes, it was done. I reverted the settings and factory reset my phone(with the line of thinking that if a factory reset would revert the repair I'd find out now and not be stuck months later after I had forgotten about the possible ramifications) Not backing up WhatsApp was a lack of foresight, as I could have referenced the chat to give a bit more detail here. But that chat is lost to the ether now.

Four months later my phone is still working and I'm happy with my purchase. I'm writing this because when I was making the decision to hand over $100 to unblock my phone I couldn't get a straight answer to whether or not it was a real, viable option, or if it was likely a scam. So for any considering such an option it seems (in my case) to be the real deal.

If you didn't read my initial post, let me tell you what brought me to this purchase. I didn't steal a phone(practically speaking. Technically I did - I guess) My sister in law had her phone stolen. She filed a claim with her cell provider, paid a $400 deductible, and the phone was blacklisted(unbeknownst to her). The phone was later returned to her, after she had already received a replacement. When my S8 crapped out, she offered me her (blacklisted)S9 — for free. I found out it was blacklisted, she then filled me in. She tried calling the cell provider to have it removed from the blacklist, they referred us to the insurance company that did the blacklisting. The said to either destroy it or send it back to them, but no they would not remove it from the blacklist. Not wanting to do either of those(Thus technically theft) I looked for other options including replacing the the logic board about $300 I think. Or this repair service.

Now it's a pretty sketchy service in my mind. I had to not only hand over C$100 but also essentially full control over my device to a stranger via the internet and communicate via a E2EE chat. I could have easily lost that money and had malware installed on my device, or data stolen. Luckily that wasn't the case.

If you find yourself in a similar situation and want to take the $100 risk, I'd recommend you wipe it before and after. This way your data isn't on the device to be stolen and hopefully any malware that may have been installed is also wiped.

Should this IMEI become blacklisted, I'll update this post. If you're interested in which seller I used, it's in the linked, previous post.

[Help] I posted it originally in the r/Roblox but I got my message removed but if any dev can help me out with this problem :/ (I'm on android 10 I'm using a Samsung Galaxy A40)

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:03 AM PDT

I don't know if you can fix that or if it is an android problem but recently my PC just broke and the only way I can play Roblox is on Android and it sucks because of the auto jump (seriously it sucks on Minecraft why did you've done that xD) and when I connect my Keyboard and my Mouse, my Keyboard works perfectly fine (as far as I tested it) but my Right click on my Mouse is just the Android Back button wich means that the "escape" menu (I always played on PC so maybe you simply call it "Menu") takes priority over the Right click (assuming the Right click works on android) and just do not come out because of that, then 2nd problem with the mouse is that there's no Mouse lock so even in first person you can freely move your Mouse and once you've touched the corners you cant turn anymore except if you're turning in the opposite direction so maybe I should ask the Android devs of you can't do anything about that

Google widget in android 10 aosp

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 09:54 PM PDT

    the bug

The Google widget is not movable/removable on android 10 beta for asus zenfone max pro m1/M2. A lot of users have been reporting it as a bug This is what the moderator said: this has been confirmed to be the Android 10 AOSP system original design. To ensure system performance and stability, we will keep maintaining Google AOSP system design settings synchronously on ZenFone Max Pro M1

    1. Is it true?
    2. Where is it should be located in android 10 aosp(bottom or top)?

Android 10 "Recent Apps" view - how can I stop the order of the apps from shifting?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 03:28 AM PDT

I have recently switched to Android 10 from Android 7. One thing that really bugs me is the "Recent Apps" view, i.e. the menu that comes up when you tap the square button. I'm fine with the apps being horizontally arranged now. But what I absolutely cannot stand from a design perspective is the fact that the most recent app is always the one that is found furthest to the right. Because that means that my apps keep rearranging as I am switching from one app to another, and it is extremely confusing.

Here's a practical example: I had a problem with my banking app and the TAN app that belongs to that banking app. So I have two nearly identical tabs in the recent apps menu. But since I had to look at an online guide to solve my problem, I also had a browser open. The site I was looking at was by my bank, so it had the same design as both banking apps. So as I am trying to solve this problem with my banking app, I am cycling through three nearly identically looking apps. And each time I open one of them, it shifts to the right and rearranges the other two. Since the preview screen is sometimes not fully showing the content, I need to open the app to see which one it is. But this act of finding out whether an app is the correct one again rearranges the apps in the "Recent Apps" view.

    It was really infuriating.

In Android 7, the apps did not move around. If one was at the bottom of the list, it stayed there. I would love to get back this type of functionality. Do you know if there is a way to do this, ideally without installing additional apps?

Thank you in advance for your help!
