Leaked Android document points to Google Pixel 5a, foldable Pixel, and more in the pipeline

Let's talk about the Galaxy Z Fold 2

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 11:00 AM PDT

I know the price will be something ridiculous like $2000. But the improvements Samsung has made from the first Fold are incredible. Almost everything that I didn't like in the first Fold was improved.

The foldable screen is now 120Hz which is crazy if you think about it. The outer screen is now edge to edge almost and doesn't look weird with the huge bezels that the previous generation had.

They made the hinge better and with brushes that they used for the Z Flip and also used the Ultra thin glass for the screen from the Z Flip.

The main camera is similar to the S20 main camera. Not the best but not bad at all.

The camera on the inside screen is now just a punch hole instead of the huge notch that cut into the screen.

The only thing that's not amazing in my opinion is the battery at 4,500 mAh but it's understandable since it's a foldable phone and they're much more difficult to design and engineer than normal phones.

I personally never believed that S Pen support would come to the Z Fold 2 because the outer layer is plastic and the S Pen would dent it the first time you try to use it on the screen. So I'm personally not disappointed by it. Maybe in the future they can improve the screen to not be damaged by it.

All in all, I think the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was the star of the show.

Max Weinbach on Twitter: Something Samsung didn't mention about Fold2: it had an anti erosion waterproof coating on the main internal components. Doesn't make it waterproof, but should help it survive a dunk.

Is the Note 20 the biggest scam in history?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 08:38 AM PDT

Basically, let's have a look at the downgrades compared to previous notes (for Europe, although everything apart from the CPU applies to the global version as well):

    Model Note 9 Note 10 Note 20
    Chipset Exynos 9810 Exynos 9825 Exynos 990
    RAM 6/8GB 8GB 8GB
Screen Size 6.4 inch 6.3 inch 6.7 inch
    Screen Resolution 1440p - 516 ppi 1080p - 401 ppi 1080p - 393 ppi
    Screen Refresh 60hz 60hz 60hz
Screen Glass Gorilla Glass 5 Gorilla Glass 6 Gorilla Glass 5
    Curved Display Yes Yes No
    Body Glass Glass Plastic
    Main Camera Module 12 MP, f/1.5-2.4, 26mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS 12 MP, f/1.5-2.4, 27mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS 12 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/1.76", 1.8µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS
    Selfie Camera 8 MP, f/1.7, 25mm (wide), 1/3.6", 1.22µm, AF 10 MP, f/2.2, 26mm (wide), 1/3", 1.22µm, Dual Pixel PDAF 10 MP, f/2.2, 26mm (wide), 1/3.2", 1.22µm, Dual Pixel PDAF
    Battery 4000 mAh 3500 mAh 4300 mAh
    Expandable Storage Yes No No

Now, considering the Exynos 990 throttles to an even lower sustained performance than the old 9810, how is this a "flagship" 1000 euro device?

Apart from the camera (and that's debatable), this seems to have worse specs than the 2 year old Note 9. Hell, the battery is most likely worse than that of its predecessors with that chip...

Samsung should be called out for this huge scam...

Tip for those struggling with getting Google Assistant/Ok Google to work offline! (+Rant about Language Settings)

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 04:58 PM PDT

I found some comments of other Redditors struggling with not being able to access Google Asisistant offline so I wanted to share this post in the hopes that it will help someone out there!

For the longest time I've never been able to get the basic offline commands ("call Home", "send a message") to work offline. I knew that these options were only available to English (US) users so I had even changed my language from English (Canada) to (US) just to have these features but still wasn't able to get it to work.

After so much frustration I finally realized that in all their infinite wisdom, Google has made it so that there were at least 4 different places where I could tell my Pixel 3a/Google what language I preferred:

    1. Phone Settings > System > Languages & Input
    2. Google App > Settings > Google Assistant > Language & Region
    3. Google App > Settings > Google Assistant > Assistant > Languages
    4. Google App > Settings > Voice > Languages

I had only changed #1, #2 and #3 to English (US) but #4 was still on English Canada. Talk about confusing settings. I'm not sure if all 4 are required to be on English (US) but for now I have them all set to that. Perhaps only #4 needs to be English (US) for offline Assistant.

What a mess having these many language sub-menus within one app. I hope this helps someone out there text their loved ones handsfree while driving.

Preview of the Tab S7 with accessories (Korean video)

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 01:58 PM PDT

    https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI

Some key points (I have missed due to not being able to translate well)

    • There are two light sensors: one at the left and the top next to the camera. Both work in tandem. https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=254
    • Fingeprint sensor seems to be confirmed as ultrasonic for the S7+ (lack of backlight when pressed)
    • 5G is only available in Mystic Bronze https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=233
    • Book cover has a slot for the S-Pen inside (I think this was leaked). He notes that when showing the book cover's magnetic connection, it falls however Samsung has said this is not a problem with production covers. https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=412
    • Magnet on the pen is quite strong when attached to the back https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=340
    • Pen still charges only in one direction when attached like the S6
    • The keyboard cover has a 'full' cover on the back instead of the S6's 'half cover'. This is what keeps the stand attached to the tablet. He also demonstrations that the magnet strength is strong. The keyboard wobble still exists when the cover is closed. https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=526
    • 120Hz is available at full native resolution https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=706
    • Only 2 refresh rates are available 60/120. Not adaptive like the Note 20 Ultra.
    • Pen latency is quite good https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=725

I'm unsure if it's an improved Notes app:

There's some PDF editing and note taking features https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=844

    DeX https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=1194

    • They've moved the apps to the center in the tray like MacOS (also seen on Unpacked)
    • Task tray has been made transparent
    • With the right Samsung TV, wireless DeX is nearly automatic however this could work just the same way with other TVs. Multitasking is also available with two screens (I think this was already a feature like the S phones) https://youtu.be/Yp9ZyMsTOgI?t=1234
